Palmer urges WBA Benteke move

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, Carlton Palmer has said that Christian Benteke could be a fantastic signing for West Bromwich Albion.

Benteke could be useful

The Baggies have been linked with a move for the Belgium international (The Express and Star), who has scored three times in 11 matches for Crystal Palace in the Premier League so far this campaign (Transfermarkt).

Palmer believes that Sam Allardyce is right to target the 30-year-old. He said:

“Benteke is one of those strikers, he’s only scored three goals this season but he brings a lot more to the table and maybe in West Brom’s situation, where they’re battling, he can put in a shift up front, he is good at holding the ball up and he’s good at heading the ball at both ends of the pitch. Benteke might be a player who could be useful to West Brom, to help them stay in the league.”

Interesting option

While Benteke has not had the best time of it in recent years – he has just ten Premier League goals since the 2016/2017 campaign – he is still a striker with a fantastic pedigree. He has 75 goals in the top flight to his name despite that disappointing run, and his record this term has shown flashes of the ability that once saw him earn a £32.5m to Liverpool (BBC).

Currently valued at £8.1m (Transfermarkt), Allardyce has confirmed that Benteke is on his radar (Sky Sports). He actually managed the striker during his time at Selhurst Park, so he is someone he is at least familiar with. As West Brom look to stay among the elite, Benteke could provide a boost to the side’s attacking options.

WHUFC: Rosser reveals King transfer info

In recent comments made on Twitter, Evening Standard journalist Jack Rosser revealed why West Ham United did not make a move for Joshua King on deadline day, a crucial decision as it leaves the club with just one recognised striker.

According to the journalist, West Ham had cooled their interest in King – who had been linked with a move to east London in January – earlier last month, as David Moyes believed the club could sign a better option than the now-Everton forward in the winter transfer window.

He said: “Anyone wondering why West Ham never tried for King this month, I’m told interest was cooled a while ago and Moyes thought they could do better this window.”

However, after realising that they couldn’t do better in January, Rosser claimed that Moyes stuck to his mantra of ‘only bringing in players he’s convinced by’.

Rosser continued by stating that he felt ‘selling [Sebastien] Haller was the right thing to do’ as Moyes has been ‘clearing a lot of problem players he inherited’ upon taking over at West Ham.

Transfer Tavern Take

While Moyes’ stance of only signing players in which he has complete faith is to be respected, as this is likely to reduce the chance of an incoming player being a flop at the club, West Ham’s decision not to sign a striker has left Moyes with only Michail Antonio as an out and out centre-forward in his first-team squad.

And, with the 30-year-old having already suffered a number of muscle injuries so far this season, this could prove to be a fatal error of judgement and perhaps a punt on King would have been a worthwhile risk to take.

Indeed, Everton signed King on a short-term deal until the end of the season, something which, if West Ham could have got over the line, would have both provided Moyes with back up for Antonio, while also appearing to be a risk-free deal for the club, as there would be no long term commitment to the player should he fail to live up to expectations.

Everton should back Keane vs Spurs

Carlo Ancelotti should hand Michael Keane a vote of confidence by starting the Everton defender against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup after his key error in Saturday’s draw with Manchester United.

Keane returned to the Toffees line-up for his side’s trip to Old Trafford at the weekend after being benched for the 2-1 win at Leeds United, where Ben Godfrey had partnered Yerry Mina at the back.

The England defender had been a mainstay of Ancelotti’s plans for much of the season with Keane rarely taken out of the XI, while playing the full 90 minutes in 22 of his 25 appearances in all competitions.

He was hardly missed at Elland Road with Godfrey and Mina offering a composed partnership, with the summer signing from Norwich City rarely putting a foot wrong while the Colombian offered a towering presence to repeatedly head danger clear.

Yet Keane returned against Manchester United only to be caught out by the flight of the ball and leaping too early, allowing Edinson Cavani a simple and unchallenged header at the back post to open the scoring on Saturday.

Marcus Rashford came close to punishing the £25m-rated titan in the second-half, as well, with Keane too focused on the ball sitting at Cavani’s feet to see the run of his unmarked England teammate, whose eventual shot was hit straight at Robin Olsen.

No blame could be directed at Keane for Manchester United’s second and third goals, with Bruno Fernandes majestically lifting the ball over Olsen from the edge of the box in the first half and Scott McTominay heading home in the second period whilst the defender guarded the back post.

Ancelotti now has the chance to offer Keane a vote of confidence in the FA Cup by keeping the 28-year-old in his starting line-up against Tottenham, looking to guide Everton into the Quarter-Final of the competition for the first time in five years.

Ancelotti has previously praised Keane for his ability at centre-back after his efforts to keep top-four hopefuls Leicester City quiet earlier in the campaign.

“Simply because he’s a good defender and a good player,” the Everton boss told The Athletic after the 2-0 win at the King Power Stadium. “He’s focused defensively, really intelligent tactically and that’s why he’s doing well.”

The Italian now has a chance to give Keane a vote of confidence and show the defender that he believes he can bounce back from an up-and-down performance at Old Trafford, as Everton will not need a player like Mina and his aerial excellence against Tottenham.

Spurs rank 15th among all Premier League sides for accurate crosses this season, with Jose Mourinho’s men finding a teammate with just 3.1 of their 13 deliveries a game. That is also the lowest average attempts, with no side taking fewer than 14 a game, per WhoScored.

The north London side have also only scored five of their 36 goals in the top-flight this term from set-pieces, meaning Everton can make do without Mina and his 3.3 aerial duels won per game – the 14th-best average by a centre-back to have played five or more games – and give Keane a chance to rebuild his confidence.

Phil Hay gives injury boost on Koch

The Leeds United camp and fanbase will be united in their delight over their most recent Premier League result. The Whites were victorious over a bamboozled Southampton side who shipped three goals at Elland Road last time out. Despite their range of injury problems, the Whites are managing to keep the ship afloat and currently sit in a very respectable 10th place.

Jamie Shackleton and Mateusz Klich were the latest to suffer setbacks, but Phil Hay has provided a bit of good news for those worrying about Leeds’ squad depth.

The Athletic reporter has confirmed that summer signing Robin Koch is due back in training next week. The German will return after a length spell on the sidelines – a knee problem that has seen him miss a total of 16 matches so far, as per Transfermarkt.

Injury news on Robin Koch

Leeds signed the centre-back for a reported £13million last summer, beating the likes of Tottenham Hotspur to his signature. Upon arrival, he immediately became part of Marcelo Bielsa’s set-up and played every single minute of Premier League action until his knee injury forced him off the pitch against Chelsea back in December. In that time, he kept four clean sheets and established himself as a strong partner to captain Liam Cooper.

Koch’s defensive influence has been noticed by many, both domestically and internationally. His former teammate Vincenzo Grifo lauded his abilities and described him as a “monster” centre-back who has what it takes to become a “world class” player.

He is widely regarded and has a clear influence on the pitch. Compared to fellow centre-back Pascal Struijk, Koch averages more accurate per match and wins more aerial duels, highlighting his danger in the air, according to WhoScored.

Having Koch back in training is a huge boost for Leeds, as they aren’t far away now from reuniting him with with the skipper in the heart of the defence.

Liverpool’s Milner has shocker vs Fulham

It would be fair to say that not a single Liverpool player came away from Sunday’s defeat to Fulham in a positive light.

The Reds turned in an awful performance, falling to an all-time low of six consecutive defeats at Anfield for the first time in their history.

There were a handful of truly woeful performances from the home side, with the usually reliable James Milner firmly amongst them.

Starting his first Premier League game in over a month, the former England man was expected to be an experienced and calming presence in the middle of the park for Liverpool and for Jurgen Klopp.

However, he was quite the opposite, habitually arriving late into tackles and accumulating three fouls throughout the 90 minutes – more than any other player, according to WhoScored.

This was a constant source of frustration for the reigning Premier League champions as it allowed Fulham to reset and regain their defensive shape, a huge reason as to why they were able to somewhat comfortably hold out for the second period.

Deployed alongside Georginio Wijnaldum and Naby Keita, it also wasn’t the best afternoon for Milner from an attacking standpoint either.

The former Manchester City man had only one shot, that effort flying off target, whilst also contributing zero key passes or dribbles.

For a player so experienced, the 35-year-old was also ponderous on the ball, taking an age to release it. He was dispossessed once, whilst also having two unsuccessful touches. Only Xherdan Shaqiri conceded possession more frequently in the entire Liverpool team and he played the entire game whereas Milner was substituted with 15 minutes of the clash remaining, rightly so too.

Considering the Reds’ current plight, it seemed a smart move from Klopp to turn to more experience in midfield. However, it was a gamble that certainly did not pay off with Milner seemingly causing more damage to his team than he was worth.

He was late into tackles and late to play passes. Liverpool might have been better off if he was late for the team bus…

Celtic: Should they hire Michael O’Neill?

Whoever replaces Neil Lennon as Celtic’s new manager will have a seismic job on their hands.

Given how terribly this campaign has gone, they will need to rip things up and almost start again. Certainly, with Peter Lawwell also departing in the summer, lots of change will be needed in order to take Celtic back to the top.

A plethora of renowned coaches from within the football world have been linked with the vacancy. Whether it’s Frank Lampard or Roberto Martinez, some eye-catching names are regularly being branded about.

Though, one manager who hasn’t been in the discussion too much is Stoke boss Michael O’Neill. On paper, this might not look like an attractive proposition for Hoops supporters but they’d be foolish to ignore him.

Trevor Sinclair recently spoke about his chances of moving to Glasgow and how a man with his CV could be game-changing in Glasgow. He told talkSPORT (24/02 – 10:30am): “I would look at Michael O’Neill. He’s done a fantastic job with the Northern Ireland national team, he’s done a superb job with Stoke City,” he began.

Sinclair concluded: “(O’Neill) is a David Moyes kind of manager. He knows the game inside out, how to run clubs from top to bottom. You need a manager like that to come in and give the club a shake – and I think that’s what is needed.”

Indeed, despite O’Neill’s win rate of just 39% with Stoke, he has revived them, replicating a similar sort of job that he did with the Northern Irish national side.

When he walked into that job, they were in a desperate place. Northern Ireland were very quickly slipping towards their lowest FIFA ranking and in September 2012, were placed 129th. O’Neill, however, used supreme professionalism and tactical acumen to breathe fresh life into not only the team but also the country as a whole.

Just four years later, they were competing at the European Championships in France. They weren’t just there to make up the numbers either. O’Neill had guided his team from being one of the worst in Europe based on FIFA rankings to reaching the last 16 at the Euros.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-on-celtics-managerial-vacancy” title=”Check out the latest on Celtic’s managerial vacancy!”]

Wales knocked them out, but despite that, O’Neill had brought a country and its fan base together with his pragmatic approach.

In the words of BBC reporter Richard Petrie; “O’Neill’s philosophy of the sum of the parts being more effective than individual star performers built a sense of togetherness and collective team spirit which served a squad with a paucity of Premier League players at its disposal well.”

Petrie continued: “Tactically, his style was pragmatic – always a bespoke game plan in place depending on the opposition – difficult to break down, with pressing and exploiting opportunities to score from set-pieces or on the counter-attack in mind. It was a formation that his squad grew comfortable and familiar with and yielded positive results.”

For a side like Celtic, so in need of being revived, this could be ideal. You only need to look at what he’s done for Stoke too.

The Potters were sitting rock bottom of the English Championship when the 51-year-old took over in September 2019. He subsequently guided them to a finish of 15th last term. This season, meanwhile, they are now sitting in 11th position with an outside chance of reaching the playoffs.

He has engineered successful revivals in two successive jobs now. With that in mind, O’Neill seems like the ideal man for a crisis. Celtic could benefit ten-fold from his arrival at Parkhead.

Gers: Robinson praises Defoe

In a recent interview, Paul Robinson heaped a considerable amount of praise on Glasgow Rangers centre-forward, Jermain Defoe, after footage of the Gers man emerged.

In the footage posted by Rangers TV, an emotional Defoe discussed Rangers’ title win, touching on how much the championship meant to him personally as well as to the club as a whole.

And, in reaction, Robinson – who played with Defoe at Tottenham Hotspur – claimed it was “incredible” to see his old friend win his first league title at the age of 38, before stating his belief that Steven Gerrard will be doing everything in his power to keep Defoe at Ibrox next season.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “It is incredible to see him get a title at this stage of his career. I played with Jermain for quite a bit of my career, I spent a lot of time with him for club and country and let me tell you, he is an infectious character.

“I know he will be loving life up there at the moment. I am sure Steven will be doing everything he can to keep him there for another year after what they have just achieved.”

Transfer Tavern Take

Since joining Rangers on what was originally a season-long loan deal that the club went on to make a permanent move last summer, Defoe has scored 29 goals and provided 10 assists over his 66 appearances for Gers.

And, although the 38-year-old has found his playing time more limited this season, featuring just 11 times in the Scottish Premiership, he has undoubtedly contributed to Rangers’ title win, scoring two goals and providing one assist serving in a back-up role.

Having said that, with Defoe’s contract set to expire at the end of the season and the centre-forward reported to be earning a whopping £65,000 per week at Gers, Robinson’s claim that Gerrard will be doing all he can to keep the striker at the club this summer may depend on the striker’s willingness to take a pay cut.

Bull questions VAR involvement in Wolves loss

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Bull, who scored 306 goals for Wolverhampton Wanderers, struggled to understand why VAR did not intervene to award what he believed to be two definite penalties against Liverpool on Monday.

Bull was sure that the first appeal when Alisson barged through Adama Traore after falling to catch the ball should have been a penalty for Wolves as they ended up losing 1-0 to the Reds.

The former Wolves striker questioned why the referee was not called over to the pitchside monitor to look at the incident, which could have been a game-changing moment.

Wolves’ all-time top scorer believes the VAR officials are more bothered about minuscule decisions, thus turning a blind eye to the extremely obvious which would not require a long time to make a decision on.

Speaking on his confusion that neither the on-pitch referee nor the VAR officials thought it was a foul on Traore and their obsession with tiny details, Bull told FFC exclusively:

“We had two blatant penalties which weren’t given but the first one involving the goalkeeper definitely should have been.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/exclusive-andreas-sondergaard-wolves-premier-league” title=”Exclusive! Andreas Sondergaard talks all things Wolves”]

“VAR wasn’t used to review either of those decisions and I thought ‘why not?’

“They’re more bothered about trying to catch a little handball in the box rather than a blatant foul.”

VAR has come in for some serious criticism this season and it does not appear to be stopping with more contentious issues every day.

Nuno Espirito Santo was vocal last week about VAR and how it’s good that clubs are being able to voice their concerns and opinions.

Spurs should replace Lloris with Henderson

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Premier League striker Dean Windass said that Hugo Lloris’ days with Tottenham are numbered, and believes Spurs would be getting an upgrade if they signed Manchester United’s Dean Henderson.

Lloris has entered the final 18 months of his contract in north London, and despite playing every minute in the Premier League this season, has been strongly linked with PSG, which would see him reunite with Mauricio Pochettino.

Reports previously have suggested that the pair remain in regular contact, some 18 months after the Argentine left Spurs.

Meanwhile, 24-year-old Henderson has been David De Gea’s back-up this term, but with the latter recently returning to Spain for the birth of his daughter, the England goalkeeper has started Manchester United’s last three Premier League matches, keeping clean sheets in each, including in the Manchester derby.

Despite his run in the side, De Gea is more than likely to reclaim his place once he’s available again, and with Henderson looking to become a number one, which would enhance his England chances, Tottenham have been touted as a potential future destination for the former Sheffield United loanee, if £100,000-a-week man Lloris departs.

Spurs have also been linked with Burnley’s Nick Pope, and Windass told Football FanCast that he believes both would be an upgrade on Lloris.

He said: “He’s [Henderson] better than Lloris, in my opinion. He’s better with his feet. Dean Henderson has had a great season, but so has Nick Pope at Burnley. He will be looking to get in the England squad, and both of them two are better goalkeepers than Lloris.

“Goalkeepers now have to be good with their feet, especially in the Premier League, and these two are very good with their feet, as well as stopping the ball from going in the goal. I think Lloris will leave in the summer, his time’s up now.”

West Ham committed to signing Dawson

According to a report by Claret & Hugh, West Ham United are now committed to bringing defender Craig Dawson onto the payroll permanently, with David Moyes deciding some time back that he wanted a permanent deal regardless of his obligation-to-buy clause.

West Ham committed to Dawson signing

Indeed, as per the Irons insiders, West Ham had already made the call over Dawson becoming a permanent player, with the 30-year-old having been a revelation since coming to the London Stadium on loan.

The defender, who has started 14 Premier League games this season (WhoScored), took a while to work his way into the side but has managed to usurp the likes of Fabian Balbuena and Issa Diop over the course of the campaign.

He is currently a mainstay in Moyes’ backline, and the manager has apparently already made up his mind on a permanent deal for Dawson, with the club set to sign him for around £3m.

Transfer Tavern take

Claret & Hugh added that GSB are committed to this transfer regardless of whether Dawson hits the number of games needed to trigger his obligation-to-buy clause, which seems inevitable judging by Moyes’ recent admission that it was ‘very close’.

Given his form over this season, it seems obvious why Moyes made up his mind about the 30-year-old a while ago.

Bringing Dawson to east London permanently for just £3m has been described as a potentially ‘staggering’ deal by pundit Noel Whelan (Football Insider), and it’s hard to argue with his assessment.
