The Verdict: Would Harry Wilson be a good signing for Aston Villa?

[ad_pod ]

Harry Wilson was one of the star players in the Championship last season, finding the back of the net in the league on 16 occasions.

The winger was in mesmeric form for Derby as they ironically lost in the play-off final to the side now interested in his services.

The Mirror claim that Liverpool have put a £21m price tag on the 22-year-old who has attracted the eyes of Aston Villa.

It’s a transfer that could be hotly contested with a number of clubs also keen, per the report. In England, Leicester are among the parties who could make a move whilst there is further interest from abroad. Also on alert are Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig, Getafe and Valencia.

The array of clubs pondering a deal are hugely impressive given he’s only shown what he’s capable of in England’s second tier so far.

However, his performances on the pitch more than warrant a switch to a club in a higher division after starring in the Championship.

And with a move to Villa potentially on the cards, Football FanCast writers have given their verdicts on whether buying Wilson would be good business for Dean Smith’s men. Here’s what they’ve had to say.

Charles Jones:

“Harry Wilson could be a brilliant signing for Aston Villa even at £21m. Of course, the worry is that he has no Premier League experience, but you only have to look at James Maddison to show you how well players can do when coming from from the Championship. There’s an argument to be made that Wilson had a better season at Derby than Maddison had at Norwich before his move to Leicester, and if he can make the step-up in a similar fashion £21m would be an absolute steal.”

Billy Meyers:

“This is a lot of money for a newly promoted team to spend, and a deal that doesn’t seem necessary to me. There’s much better value elsewhere for players who can do a similar job, such as Said Benrahma from Brentford, who set up far more goals than Wilson last year and scored just a handful less than the Welshman. Villa should look elsewhere.”

Jack Saville:

“The Wilson situation is an intriguing one. How often have we seen a Championship star fail to make the grade at the elite level? However, it’s clear from his technique that he is unlikely to become another Championship specialist, and at just £21m Villa could land one of the signings of the summer. £20m James Maddison fell into that category during his maiden Premier League campaign with Leicester last season, and there is plenty of evidence from Wilson’s time with both Derby and Hull City to suggest the free-kick specialist could be on a similar path.”

Liverpool Transfer Roundup: Fernandes push, Harper interest, Betis after Origi

[ad_pod ]

2018/19 was a fantastic season for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool as they lifted the Champions League title, and they will be hoping that the next campaign will be just as good, if not even better. Today’s Reds transfer roundup includes a move for a Portugal international, interest in a Championship midfielder and the potential exit of a Champions League hero.

Late Fernandes push

According to journalist Pietro Balzano Prota, Liverpool have made a late move for Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes. Manchester United had reportedly been close to sealing a deal, but the Anfield outfit have now interfered with those talks.

Interest in Baggies midfelder

Liverpool are interested in West Bromwich Albion midfielder Rekeem Harper according to the Mirror. The 19-year-old is out of contract this month and has failed to agree a new deal with the Midlands outfit and will, therefore, be available for a compensation fee. Tottenham and Juventus are also interested.

Origi on Betis radar

Divock Origi is a target for Real Betis according to Estadio Deportivo. The Belgian, who scored in both the semi-final and the final of the Champions League this year, has just one year left on his contract, which may force Liverpool to consider good offers for his services.

A settled Josh McPake can push towards Rangers first-team

Josh McPake’s future at Rangers has been in the balance recently.

The Daily Record reported in June that big teams such as Liverpool, AS Roma and Borussia Monchengladbach had all registered interest in the player, with just a year left on his contract at the club.

All that though appears to be settled, with The Evening Times stating over the weekend that a new contract has been verbally agreed with the club.

The paper say that he will sign a three-year extension to his current deal that will keep him at Ibrox until 2023.

It’s a big boost for manager Steven Gerrard, who is said to be a “huge admirer” of the youngster.

Now that his future appears to be settled, the teenager has a great chance of pushing towards the Gers first-team.

The winger was a stand-out for the club’s development and reserve sides last season as they stormed towards a league and cup double.

He won the Academy Player of the Year award back in April and followed that up with a man of the match performance in a Scottish Youth Cup Final that was broadcast live on BBC Scotland, giving fans a proper glimpse of his future.

Most recently he’s been part of Gerrard’s pre-season training camp squad in Portugal, getting action in a closed door training game against Mansfield on Saturday alongside established stars such as Alfredo Morelos and Daniel Candeias.

Still just 17 years of age, patience is required when it comes to his development, but he’s on the right track and, reported to have decided on his future, doesn’t appear far away from making an Ibrox impact.

Liverpool: Nathaniel Clyne attracting interest

Interest is mounting in Liverpool full-back Nathaniel Clyne, who is yet to announce his future intentions after recently returning from a loan spell with Bournemouth, as per the Liverpool Echo.

The Champions League winners have apparently received several offers for Clyne, but the right-back – having not made a decision over his future – could still start the new season with the European champions, despite the fact no new contract is thought to be forthcoming.

Opportunities haven’t been easy to come by for the former Southampton man since the meteoric rise of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who replaced him in the Liverpool line-up due to an untimely injury picked up in the 2017-18 campaign which also saw him miss both the Champions League final and World Cup.

As per Liverpool Echo, the defender has attracted offers from a number of clubs this summer, with Crystal Palace, loan side Bournemouth and West Ham United among those being linked.

Despite making just four Premier League appearances for the Reds last season, Clyne is one of the players to report back for pre-season training at Melwood on Saturday and is yet to give any real indication as to where his future plans lie.

As it stands, Liverpool currently have one out-and-out right-back in Alexander-Arnold, with Joe Gomez, who’s recently returned from a lengthy injury spell, the only other man capable of playing the role, operating there three times (WhoScored) last season, including the first-leg of the semi-final against Barcelona in the Champions League.

In fact, the decision to let him leave on loan in January was described as a ‘mistake’ by Jamie Carragher when speaking on Monday Night Football back in February.

It perhaps wouldn’t hurt their chances, then, to have an international defender as a back-up option – especially one who has a history as a mainstay talent in Klopp’s side, having amassed 93 appearances (Transfermarkt) under his stewardship.

Liverpool fans, how would you deal with the Clyne Situation? Is he worth keeping on? Let us know in the comments below…

Spurs fans unsurprised by prospect of Bale bid being rubbished

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans have collectively rolled their eyes at Gareth Bale’s agent claiming the club have not made a bid for the Real Madrid star.

The Wales international was linked with a possible return to the club in the summer transfer window on Tuesday.

Marca claimed that the club were willing to pay between €50m (£45.1m) and €60m (£54.1m) for their former winger.

Jonathan Barnett, Bale’s representative, told talkSPORT, however, that the report was “rubbish”.

And fans are not surprised at the development, with the club having already broken their transfer record to sign Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon.

Bale reportedly earns a salary of €17m (£15.3m), per Marca, of which Spurs were said to be willing to pay half of. That would come to about £147,000-per-week.

With chairman Daniel Levy a notoriously tough negotiator, fans have reacted with a mixture of sarcasm and humour to the report, particularly after it was denied so vehemently.

Leeds United’s predicted starting XI for pre-season clash with Tadcaster Albion

[ad_pod ]

While 16 of Leeds United’s players are currently in Australia as part of the club’s pre-season tour, many of those who remained at home in England are getting ready to take on Tadcaster Albion on Wednesday night.

The likes of Kemar Roofe, Pablo Hernandez, Liam Cooper and Kalvin Phillips made the trip Down Under, but it certainly doesn’t mean that there won’t be any senior players on show against the North Yorkshire based outfit.

The Whites’ Championship campaign gets underway in two-and-a-half weeks’ time, and manager Marcelo Bielsa will want his squad to be in perfect shape ahead of the visit to Ashton Gate to face Bristol City.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Getting more minutes under the belt against Tadcaster will do exactly that, so without further ado here is our predicted XI.

With Kiko Casilla and Kamil Miazek travelling to the southern hemisphere, that leaves Bailey Peacock-Farrell to take up his place between the sticks.

Ben White was one of the summer signings to stay behind on home shores as Bielsa looks to ensure they know exactly what he wants from them, and he may well start alongside Pascal Strujik with Pontus Jansson departed and the likes of Gaetano Berardi and Liam Cooper in Australia.

Ezgjan Alioski should fill in again at left-back, while Robbie Gotts could line up at right-back having played there for the U23s and with Luke Ayling injured.

There isn’t a great deal of choice in midfield for the Yorkshire club with Tyler Roberts injured, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Alfie McCalmont, Jamie Shackleton and Mateusz Klich make up the central midfield trio, with Jack Clarke and another new boy in Helder Costa on the wings.

Samu Saiz was reportedly due back in training on Monday, but with few updates on him it appears highly unlikely he will be involved on Wednesday.

Lastly, with Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford both Down Under it may well come down to a straight choice between Ryan Edmondson and Kun Temenuzhkov up top, and we are backing the former to get the nod.

Watch fans explain why the Football League is better than the Premier League in the video below…

Edmondson is certainly a promising talent having already made two first-team appearances despite only turning 18 in May, as well as being a prolific scorer for the U23s.

Spurs supporters have to ignore Arsenal fan jibes

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Arsenal fans are at it already.

They believe they have put one over Tottenham Hotspur by agreeing a deal to sign Dani Ceballos from Real Madrid.

The deal is a loan. It does not include a purchase option.

This is a win for Arsenal, right?

The fact of the matter, though, is that Spurs fans, really, need to ignore this because, at the end of the day, it’s nonsense.

Sources confirmed to Football FanCast earlier this month that Spurs were in talks over a deal to sign Ceballos. Mauricio Pochettino, the club’s manager, was keen to sign him as he felt he would bring an extra dimension to the side’s midfield.

Yet chairman Daniel Levy, negotiating the deal, was desperate to include a purchase option in any move that would have allowed the club to buy Ceballos for £45m next summer.

Real ultimately rejected that request because Arsenal did not insist upon such a clause. Ceballos will return to Real next summer. Spurs, as other reports have stated, did not intend to be used as a stepping stone for a player looking to extend their own career.

Arsenal, clearly, are fine with it, and this is what fans are celebrating.

Spurs fans would do well to ignore them; the club have already broken their transfer record once this summer to purchase Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon for a fee of over £50m and are reportedly closing in on Real Betis’ Giovani Lo Celso, another deal that will cost over £50m.

Ryan Sessegnon, the Fulham teenager, is another target.

There is also talk that Arsenal have beaten Spurs to the punch on Saint-Etienne defender William Saliba when, in reality, Pochettino wanted him in his squad for the 2019/20 season, per sources. The Gunners are set to pay €30m (£26.8m) for him and then loan him back to France. That’s another win.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Of course, social media is a hive of this. It is the ideal place to spout nonsense opinions about football because, really, what else is there to do?

Arsenal fans fling jibes and digs at Tottenham fans constantly and vice versa.

The reality is that Arsenal will be signing a player who is undoubtedly an upgrade on the likes of Mohamed Elneny and Granit Xhaka and who has won the Player of the Tournament at the Under-21 European Championships in his career. Saliba, too, could turn into a very fine defender.

But these are not deals to celebrate, to rub the noses of their rivals in.

Spurs are on an upward curve, bringing in players on permanent deals and instantly strengthening their squad.

Arsenal are either loaning a player with the intention of him returning to his parent club next year, or sending him back to whence he came almost immediately.

Whatever hashtag you put on it, this isn’t a win for the Gunners.

Ex-Spurs ace Kieran Trippier admits to 2018/19 struggles

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Kieran Trippier has admitted he endured a poor run of form at Tottenham Hotspur last season, per BBC Sport.

What’s the word?

The right-back sealed a £20m move to Atletico Madrid earlier this summer.

Trippier’s move came about after a difficult season that was categorised by individual mistakes, namely a comical own goal against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

And he has now admitted that he was distracted by speculation over his future.

He said: “I’m happy it’s gone. I’m happy to talk about it if people want to – but I’m delighted it’s over.

“There’s no excuse for what happened last season.

“Some things happened – nothing bad, it was just injuries and hearing things like I won’t be there next season in the media.

“It was in the back of my mind: ‘Did they want me?’

“It was important to know – that’s why I sat down with the manager (Mauricio Pochettino) in pre-season and asked the question.”

Finally honest

Trippier previously claimed that he left Spurs because of “behind-the-scenes” developments.

Now he has fronted up.

Throughout last season, the England international was so bad he was actually left out of Gareth Southgate’s squad for the Nations League finals.

It is refreshing to see that he has admitted he has no excuse for his appalling performances but perhaps he should not have tried to mask that previously.

Spurs fans will likely forgive him, though, particularly as they don’t have to watch him in 2019/20.

Spurs linked with shock Philippe Coutinho swoop

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Tottenham Hotspur have tabled a loan bid for Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho, per The Times.

What’s the word?

The report states that Spurs are trying to sign the Brazil international prior to Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Indeed, Mauricio Pochettino worked with the former Liverpool star at Espanyol.

Barca are keen to receive a £21m loan fee for the player, per the report, while he also earns over £200,000-per-week; if he were to move to the club The Times states that he would become their highest earner.

A surprise alternative

This is a surprise.

It is a link that has largely come out of the blue; sources have confirmed that the club remain in talks with Sporting Lisbon over Bruno Fernandes and have also authenticated their interest in Real Betis’ Giovani Lo Celso.

To change tack and suddenly do a deal for Coutinho this late in the window would be a shock, not least because of his profile and Premier League experience.

He cost Barca over £140m when he joined them from Liverpool, having emerged as a star at Anfield.

[ad_pod ]

Coutinho scored 54 goals and registered 45 assists for the Reds in 201 games and he has also netted 21 times and provided 11 assists during his time at Camp Nou.

This may well end up being a deal that is done without Fernandes and Lo Celso arriving; perhaps this is actually a fall-back option that could be exercised at the eleventh hour.

It would be good planning ahead of what looks to be a remarkably frantic deadline day in north London.

Arsenal’s new approach with super agents has paid off big time

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

So after a disappointing end to the campaign saw the club miss out on a lucrative return to the glitz and glamour of the Champions League, Arsenal head into the opening game of the new season with a sense of optimism and bounce.

Unai Emery’s side had one of the more fruitful transfer windows of any side in the Premier League, and addressed several concerning issues from last season. A new winger, box-to-box midfielder, left-back and centre-back were on the agenda, and all were signed, sealed and delivered come the end of deadline day. One of the key changes in the Gunners’ surprising new efficiency? The willingness to do deals with notorious ‘super agents’.

[ad_pod ]

It was one of the defining features of Arsene Wenger’s reign that the north London side refrained from getting into the dark arts of negotiating with powerful agents and representatives. There was a certain aversion to wanting to get into bed with individuals who reeked of a selfishness and money-hungry nature. It was perhaps one of the biggest reasons behind why clients of the likes of Mino Raiola, Jorge Mendes and Kia Joorabchian never really got a look in at the Emirates.

But with Wenger and Gazidis’ departure, in came new Head of Football Raul Sanllehi – the mastermind behind Barcelona’s move for Brazil superstar Neymar. Reports in recent weeks had suggested the Gunners were far more open to getting in touch with ‘super agents’ this summer and it was claimed the side’s club-record deal for Nicolas Pepe was smoothed over by Mendes. Then, on deadline day, when the Gunners were frantically scrambling around for a centre-back, in came Chelsea’s David Luiz, a client of Joorabchian.

Wenger’s rather holier-than-thou principle of refusing to do business with the likes of Mendes and Joorabchian was outdated. The modern world of football revolves around connections and contacts, and Sanllehi certainly has that in his resume. So when the Gunners look back on a pivotal summer transfer window, the most defining statement will be the moment where they reconciled with the new era of super agents, and all that it entails.
