Sunderland make contact to sign "incredible" 24 y/o for Le Bris in January

Sunderland are believed to have made contact over the signing of an “incredible” player who could bolster the Black Cats’ Championship promotion push.

Sunderland transfer news

Sunderland kept their hopes of returning to the Premier League looking strong over the weekend, following a 1-0 win at home to Portsmouth. While not exactly the most memorable of performances, three points were all that mattered for Regis Le Bris’ side, who sit fourth in the table.

New signings this month could help bolster the Black Cats’ chances of going up this season, with Chelsea youngster Harvey Vale one player who has been linked with a move to the Stadium of Light in the coming weeks. The attacking midfielder is also wanted by Anderlecht and Heerenveen, though.

Sunderland have also reportedly made an enquiry about the services of former Leeds United midfielder Glen Kamara, who is now plying his trade at Ligue 1 side Rennes. A loan move has been mooted for the Finland international.

One worrying exit rumour that has emerged relates to centre-back Dan Ballard, with rivals Newcastle United thought to have sent scouts to watch him in action. Black Cats supporters would understandably dread the idea of him moving to St James’ Park.

Sunderland make contact with "incredible" ace

According to an Italian journalist, relayed by Football Italia, Sunderland have made contact with Roma midfielder Enzo Le Fee over a move to the Stadium of Light.

The report says that the Black Cats have spoken to the 24-year-old’s representatives, as they look to snap him up during the January transfer window amid a direct request from Le Bris.

Le Fee could be a great signing for Sunderland before the end of the January window, coming in and adding genuine quality in the middle of the park at a key point in the season.

The Frenchman is now an established top-level footballer, making 10 appearances for Roma and also enjoying spells with FC Lorient and Rennes in the past. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has hailed him as “incredible”, too, back in 2022.

At 24, Le Fee appears to be the perfect age to come in and make an impact for Sunderland straight away, possessing plenty of experience and also being young enough to improve further in the coming years.

Added quality and depth could be priceless between now and the end of the season, with legs potentially tiring as the campaign goes on, so the Roma man should be considered an exciting option to bring in.

The fact that contact has already been made suggests Sunderland could soon be confident of getting their man, potentially choosing to submit a bid next.

Jamie Carragher issues transfer demand to Liverpool with ex-defender telling Reds they need SIX new signings despite expected Premier League glory

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has adviced the Reds to make at least six signings this summer despite their expected Premier League glory.

Liverpool inch closer to Premier League gloryCarragher believes Reds need six signingsThree major stars could leave in the summerFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool are inching ever closer to the Premier League title this season as Arne Slot's side need just four wins from eight games to clinch their 20th English top-tier league title. However, things haven't been good for the Merseyside clubs in other competitions as they lost the Carabao Cup final, faced defeat in the Champions League last-16, and crashed out of the FA Cup in round four.

Liverpool have a lot of headaches on their hands over the course of the season with Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah's contracts set to run out in the summer. The Reds expect Van Dijk and Salah to stay at the club, however, the deals are yet to be completed, and an exit could still be on the cards. As such, Carragher has urged the Reds to make new signings in the summer to revitalise Slot's options for next season.

Getty Images SportWHAT CARRAGHER SAID

In his piece with , Carragher wrote: "In all honesty, when looking at Slot’s squad, it feels like he may need as many as six before next summer. That is a statement you would expect to make about an underperforming team, or one requiring an overhaul. Reinforcements are required independent of whether the big three out-of-contract stars stay.

"Liverpool need a left-back to compete with Andy Robertson, extending the Scottish captain’s Anfield career by reducing the necessity for him to play every game. They need a centre-back to ensure there is no crisis if Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté are unavailable.

"Also, a deep central midfielder so that Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister are not as overburdened next season as they have been in this one. Add to that an attacking midfielder who will score and create more than Dominik Szoboszlai. And finally a left winger and centre-forward who can win games as often as Mohamed Salah.

"Such additions would enhance rather than replace those who have inspired Liverpool to the top."

WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?

Slot's side have managed to show some of their class in the Premier League, and Carragher believes they are 'on the brink of greatness' but need recruitments next season. He wrote: "We are watching a very good Liverpool team on the brink of greatness. My suspicion is that during the course of his reign, Arne Slot and the recruitment team above him will have constructed a better squad, regardless of whether they match or eclipse this year’s likely success."

Marizanne Kapp holds nerve for Invincibles as Alana King, Bryony Smith threaten Rockets miracle

Visitors stumble over line in 113-run chase as spinners apply the brake

Adam Dosunmu Slater17-Aug-2022Oval Invincibles 115 for 5 (Bates 41, Kapp 34*) beat Trent Rockets 112 for 9 (Sciver 59*) by five wicketsAll-rounder Marizanne Kapp starred as Oval Invincibles beat Trent Rockets by five wickets with a ball to spare at Trent Bridge after Bryony Smith almost pulled off a miracle at the end.The Rockets’ small target of 112, helped by Nat Sciver’s 59 not out off 48 balls, seemed like it would not be enough as Suzie Bates, 41 from 32, and Alice Capsey, 24 from 18, put the Invincibles well ahead of the rate. The visitors had victory in sight before Smith (three for 21), tasked with defending just five from the last 10 deliveries, saw her first eight leg breaks take two wickets for just three runs. It would be South African Kapp, 34 from 27, who held her nerve, hitting the winning runs.Last year’s fixture was washed out meaning this was the first match between the sides in the competition. The weather threatened again with grey clouds overhead and the floodlights on. Feeling the conditions would be in their favour Invincibles captain, Bates chose to bowl. The Rockets made a good start, Smith the only casualty of the powerplay, leaving them 27 for one. With 51 at halfway and eight wickets in hand, the Rockets looked set to post their highest total of the year. The measly Eva Gray, who had earlier seen Sciver dropped, bowled South African Mignon du Preez to shift the momentum back. But with Sciver there the Rockets still had a chance of a big score. All she needed was a partner to boost the innings but it never came.Instead, the Rockets lost three wickets in four balls. Alana King and Marie Kelly fell to the 85th and 86th balls. Sciver almost fell from the 88th, Capsey dropping a caught-and-bowled chance but the falling ball hit the stumps to run out Katherine Brunt at the non-striker’s end.The Rockets never recovered from the blip and ended up posting a below-par 112 for eight, thanks to tight bowling from Kapp’s one for 18 and the impressive Gray, two for 16.In reply, the Invincibles’ captain, Bates showed the positive intent the Rockets’ innings lacked. The New Zealander swept Sciver for six and found the boundary with ease, to leave her side well ahead at 33 for one from the powerplay. The leg-spin of King and Sarah Glenn could not stop the tide, with a six from youngster Capsey taking the rate to under a run a ball after 33 deliveries. The pair would continue to clear the rope off the spinners, something the Rockets failed to do once in their innings. At 70 for one at halfway, the Invincibles were cruising. That all changed when Capsey fell going for another six off Glenn. Bates was next to go, dismissed by Glenn four balls later, to give the Rockets a sniff. The next set of 10 bowled by King conceded zero runs bringing huge roars from the Trent Bridge crowd and left the Invincibles needing 33 from the final 30.Some timely boundaries from Kapp gave the Invincibles just five needed from the final 10. But the game turned again, as Smith’s magic threatened an unlikely win before Kapp struck another boundary to finish the game.

After Marmoush: Man City preparing bid for £55m star who’d revive Grealish

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola hopes a few January signings will revitalise his squad ahead of the next few months.

A deal to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush looks set to be completed sooner rather than later, bolstering City’s stagnating frontline in the process.

The 25-year-old has scored 20 goals in just 26 games for the German side, and his presence could give the Etihad side an edge in the final third.

Guardiola doesn’t appear to be stopping there, however, as a move to sign a player from Serie A is close to being agreed…

Man City transfer latest

According to Sky Sports Italy, City are close to lodging a bid for Juventus defender Andrea Cambiaso, with a fee in the region of €65m (£55m) having been mentioned.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Juventus are holding out for a slightly higher figure, but the report adds that there is a good chance the club will accept the proposal submitted by City, who are willing to offer Cambiaso a five-year contract.

Aged just 24, the defender has plenty of experience in Serie A and with the Italian national side, indicating that he could be a wise signing by the Spaniard.

Perhaps he could even rejuvenate Jack Grealish too, who has struggled of late.

Why Andrea Cambiaso could revive Jack Grealish

Grealish was a key member of the squad during the treble-winning 2022/23 campaign, registering 16 goal contributions in all competitions for City as they swept the board.

Since then, however, things have been much more difficult. Indeed, since the start of the 2023/24 season, the Englishman has scored only four goals in 56 appearances.

Furthermore, he ranks in the bottom 1% for non-penalty goals and in the bottom 72% for assists per 90 when compared to peers in the Premier League.

By signing Cambiaso, Guardiola might be able to get the former Aston Villa starlet back to his best, especially considering how good the Italian is going forward.

Amid links with City, one analyst stated that the defender could “become one of the best FBs in the world” upon moving to Manchester, while data analyst Ben Mattinson has also lauded just how “dangerous” he is down the flanks.

Andrea Cambiaso in action for Juventus.

The 24-year-old has created three big chances in Serie A this season, along with succeeding with 63% of his dribble attempts, proving that he loves bursting forward from his own half to create opportunities deep in the final third.

Additionally, compared to his positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues, Cambiaso ranks in the top 8% for progressive carries (3.38), the top 7% for shot-creating actions (3.29), and the top 13% for key passes (1.54) per 90 over the previous 365 days.

These statistics are evidence of his forward-thinking abilities, which could see Grealish return to the player he was a couple of seasons ago, knowing that there is someone ready to link up with him down the left flank.

Having Grealish back firing might just be the catalyst for City to go on a solid run of form over the next few months.

Aston Villa player ratings vs PSG: Champions League agony for Unai Emery's brave Villans as Emiliano Martinez mistake proves costly despite epic comeback

The Argentine goalkeeper's costly error left the hosts with a mountain to climb that they almost overcame against the French champions

Aston Villa's stunning comeback fell just short as they beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-2 on Tuesday but lost their quarter-final tie 5-4 on aggregate in a Champions League classic.

Villa's efforts to overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit got off to a poor start when Achraf Hakimi pounced on a mix-up between Emi Martinez and Pau Torres in the 11th minute, and the tie seemed out of reach when Nuno Mendes fired a well-hit shot in off the post just before the half-hour mark as the French champions bypassed Villa's press with ease.

The Villans were given hope 11 minutes before the break when Youri Tielemans' shot took a cruel deflection off Willian Pacho to beat Gianluigi Donnarumma, and they got a further spark early in the second period when captain John McGinn drove more than 40 yards with the ball and then curled an effort, which took another slight deflection off Pacho, into the top corner.

The roof nearly lifted off Villa Park two minutes later when Ezri Konsa swept the ball into the corner following a brilliant dribbling run from Marcus Rashford, and PSG were well and truly rattled. Had it not been for the excellent Donnarumma then Rashford, Tielemans, and substitute Marco Asensio would have added to Villa's goal tally.

Ian Maatsen also had a shot cleared off the line by Pacho at the death, but in the end PSG survived an almighty scare to progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

GOAL rates Aston Villa's players from Villa Park…

Emi Martinez (6/10):

Was at fault for PSG's first goal as he failed to keep hold of Barcola's cross, but made some decent stops thereafter.

Matty Cash (7/10):

Clearly struggled with the pace of Barcola and trickery of Kvaratskhelia, but also put in some good tackles and got forward nicely.

Ezri Konsa (8/10):

His stock is continuing to rise after a performance like this. Took his goal superbly and was Villa's best defender by far.

Pau Torres (6/10):

Didn't help Martinez for Hakimi's goal and wasn't as assured at the back as his team needed him to be.

Lucas Digne (5/10):

While his talents going forward cannot be denied, his tracking back leaves a lot to be desired.

Boubacar Kamara (6/10):

Was caught out for PSG's opener and struggled to handle the away side's dynamic midfield.

Amadou Onana (6/10):

The big Belgian started this game after impressing off the bench in the first leg, but wasn't as effective at Villa Park.

Youri Tielemans (8/10):

His creativity and threat in the final third have been a nuisance in both ties, particularly this one. He got his goal and could have had another, had it not been for the great goalkeeping of Donnarumma.

Morgan Rogers (6/10):

Didn't have as much spark as he has done in recent times, but still provided a threat every now and again.

Marcus Rashford (8/10):

His heavy touch provided the platform for PSG's breakaway opener, but he improved immensely in the second half, with his assist for Villa's third an absolute peach.

John McGinn (8/10):

Ran his socks off for his team and almost single-handedly kick-started their fightback in the second half with a marauding run and goal.

Jacob Ramsey (6/10):

Was quite quiet despite running all over the place.

Marco Asensio (7/10):

Nearly scored straight after coming on, only for Donnarumma to make a key stop. His runs kept PSG honest.

Ollie Watkins (6/10):

Didn't do a great deal when he came on for Rashford.

Ian Maatsen (7/10):

Was so close to forcing the game to extra-time but his shot was saved at the end.

Ross Barkley (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

Unai Emery (8/10):

His big call to start Rashford over Watkins initially looked like the wrong decision, but proved to, arguably, be the right one. Deserves huge credit for how his side kept going and nearly pulled off the impossible.

Arsenal struck gold on big-money star who’s worth way more than Zubimendi

There is less than a week to go until the transfer window slams shut, and so far, Arsenal have signed no one.

Mikel Arteta’s side are still just about in the Premier League title race and going strong in the Champions League, but with significant injuries to key players like Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus, attacking reinforcements are a necessity.

Now, there has been a constant stream of links to top strikers such as Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha, but so far the only player who looks likely to sign on the dotted line before February 3rd is Norwegian wonderkid Sverre Nypan.

However, just because nobody has joined the club this month doesn’t mean the recruitment team have been doing nothing, as a couple of weeks ago it was revealed by Sami Mokbel that Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi looks set to join the club in the summer, although even at £51m, he’ll be worth millions less than one of his new teammates.

Why Arsenal want Martin Zubinmendi

Now, it would be fair to say that, on the surface, midfield reinforcements don’t look like a pressing matter at the moment.

However, when you take into account the fact that the contracts for both Thomas Partey and Jorginho are set to expire in the summer, things start to look very different.

So, with the need for more bodies in the middle of the park clear, why have the club supposedly identified and committed to spending so much on Zubimendi of all players?

Martin Zubimendi

Well, one of the key benefits to signing the Spanish international is that he appears to be more than capable of playing as a traditional number six as well as an eight, thus giving Arteta more flexibility when setting up his teams, and as we now know, he loves players who can play more than one role.

However, versatility is not the only skill the San Sabastian-born maestro possesses, as he showed in the European Championships final last summer that he’s more than capable of controlling a game against some of the best attackers in the world when he had to come on for the injured Rodri at half-time.

The 25-year-old didn’t put a foot wrong and more than justified manager Luis de la Fuente’s pre-tournament claim that the La Real star is one of the “best central midfielders in the world.”

It wasn’t a one-off either, with respected analyst Ben Mattinson describing the 25-year-old’s “superpower trait” as the fact that he “doesn’t do much wrong” and has “near-perfect decision-making.”

With that said, even at £51m, Zubimendi would not be close to the valuation of one of his potential teammates at Arsenal.

The Arsenal star worth millions more than Zubimendi

So, to get straight to the point, the Arsenal star in question is none other than Declan Rice, who became the Gunners’ record signing in the summer of 2023 when he joined the club from West Ham United for a staggering £105m.

Now, even though that is an enormous amount of money for a player, he is actually worth even more today, with FOTMOB now valuing him at a whopping €130m, which is about £109m, or £58m more than Zubimendi is set to cost.

That might sound like an outrageously high price tag, but aside from a few lacklustre games earlier this season, it would be hard to say that the Englishman has not been worth his initial fee and is undeserving of this new valuation.

Appearances

For example, since joining the club, the midfield monster, whom journalist Sam Dean described as “a different beast,” has made 81 appearances, played in three positions, scored ten goals and provided 15 assists.

Moreover, on top of hoovering up everything in the midfield, the 26-year-old has become incredibly adept at marauding through the middle of the pitch with the ball at his feet and has become a world-class corner taker to boot.

Finally, while Martin Odegaard remains the club captain, it’s impossible to ignore the leadership role that the 62-capped Englishman has taken on in the team, with Arteta often asking him to relay information from the sidelines and reports emerging that he has taken the exciting Max Dowman under his wing during training.

Ultimately, Arsenal should absolutely be confirming the Zubimendi deal as soon as possible, but he’ll have to reach utterly sensational levels at the Emirates to see his valuation get anywhere close to Rice’s.

United looked to have dropped out of the Europa League in the second leg of their quarter-final against Lyon as they went down 4-2 despite having a two-goal lead in the first half. However, Bruno Fernandes' 116th-minute penalty kicked off an insane comeback with Maguire scoring the second of United's two injury-time goals to help them win the clash 5-4 and book their spot in the Europa League semi-final.

Maguire's time at United has been very topsy-turvy after joining them in 2019 from Leicester City. After becoming the Red Devils' captain in 2020 after a good start to life, he was stripped of the captaincy in 2023. The centre-back has now equated his six years at the club to the match against Lyon and labelled it the 'maddest' game he has played.

WHAT MAGUIRE SAID

Speaking to the media, Maguire said: "It was an incredible feeling to score that winner in such an important game, in a game that was full of emotion and the strangest, maddest game I've ever played in or witnessed.

"I've been here six years now and I've had some great times and some bad times as well. I think that game pretty much summed up my time at this club, to be honest.

"I don't know how I would have felt if I had come here and been speaking to you after a 4-2 defeat – it's not even worth trying to think about that."

In the following set, Walter drove firmly to cover off Ellis.Ellis then yorked Wayne Madsen, after a period of squeeze, and Crane induced Tristan Stubbs into a squirt to point, to take the equation to 18 off 20 balls. But Turner and Lammonby made sure they booked their place in the showpiece without any more worries.

Six reasons why Chelsea shouldn't lose hope of Women's Champions League success despite Barcelona embarrassment

Sonia Bompastor has admitted there have been "big learnings" from the Blues' unsuccessful European campaign, which was ended by the Catalans on Sunday

There has been a lot of talk about the Women's Champions League around Chelsea this year. After appointing Sonia Bompastor in the summer, someone who has triumphed in the competition as both a player and a manager, and recruiting previous winners such as Lucy Bronze and Keira Walsh, many believed that the Blues' chances of finally lifting the trophy that has long eluded them were better than ever. That was until Barcelona poured ice cold water on those hopes by battering Chelsea in an 8-2 aggregate win in this year's semi-finals.

It was a humbling loss, one that shocked many given Barca had only come through as 2-1 winners on aggregate when meeting the Blues in the semi-finals in both the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. However, while Bompastor was obviously disappointed in the aftermath, she was also bullish.

"Even if I know Barcelona is a really good team, the difference between these two teams is not that much," she told . "In my head, it's really clear what we need to do and what we need to achieve to be able to compete for the Champions League final and also for this title. So, probably, it's good to have this experience and my reflection to help the club to grow, I think, in different aspects again."

Indeed, this result was a huge wake-up call for Chelsea, but there are certainly reasons for the club to believe that they can come back stronger from such a devastating defeat. What are they? GOAL picks out six…

Getty ImagesUnderstanding the challenge

Bompastor's experience of this tie is one of those big reasons. When the Frenchwoman arrived in London, she may have thought that Chelsea were not far off being able to win the Champions League, given those tight defeats to Barcelona in the previous two seasons. However, whatever her understanding of the challenge was prior to her arrival at the club, it'll certainly be greater after this Champions League campaign.

Now, she knows first-hand, and better than ever, the scale of the task and how it differs to what she was working with at Lyon. "Big learnings" is what she said she took from these two games against Barcelona, and Chelsea will hope those can help the club move a step closer in this competition next term.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesUpcoming transfer windows

Those learnings will have come in many departments. Bompastor will have taken in a lot of information about her players from both a tactical and psychological standpoint, while also undoubtedly learning a lot about her own coaching. Perhaps the most obvious difference between the two sides across these two games, though, was the clinical touch in the final third. Before Chelsea succumbed to a 4-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge, they had their chances; they just didn't take them. Barca, meanwhile, had three before half-time and scored them all. It was a theme that continued from the first leg, with the Catalans having so much more world-class attacking talent at their disposal than Chelsea at this moment.

The good news is that is something Bompastor can address in the transfer market this summer, which will be just her third window as the Blues' boss. After all, she is still making her mark on this squad and transforming it into her own. This experience will have no doubt told her that Chelsea need more going forward if they are to catch up with Barca – but there will be other positions she'll have identified as areas that need strengthening, too.

Given the success of some of Bompastor's signings this first year, fans can be encouraged at her continuing to be effective in the market, too. Sandy Baltimore was a real stand-out in this season, for example, despite some being sceptical of her arrival at first.

Getty Images SportInvestment

Complementing that is the commitment and investment that Chelsea will give Bompastor. This is a club that does not shy away from backing its women's team, a significant factor that has allowed the Blues to become the dominant force in English women's football. It craves European success too, though, and will continue to offer the necessary support to get the team to that point.

That's not just in transfers, either. Chelsea has long developed in all departments, be it scouting, medical, analysis – just name it. Indeed, its progress in youth development has been another stand-out factor in recent years. This club never stands still and that is a huge reason why the fans can believe that the Women's Champions League trophy will eventually make its way to Stamford Bridge.

Going back to the point about the difference in attacking talent between Chelsea and Barcelona, it is important to remember the players that the Blues were missing in this tie. Of course, the club needs to ensure such absentees are not as glaring misses by bolstering the attack more, but to be without Sam Kerr and Lauren James was far from ideal.

Kerr's absence was particularly felt. The Australia star would've provided the clinical touch that Chelsea lacked and she'd have improved their underwhelming hold-up play – and that's just scratching the surface of what she provides as a world-class centre-forward.

She is one of several players that Chelsea will hope to have available when they go for this title again next year. Kadeisha Buchanan, who suffered an ACL injury in November, is another. The five-time Champions League winner had started the season well until her setback left Chelsea particularly light at centre-back, with issues for Maelys Mpome and Naomi Girma leaving Millie Bright and Nathalie Bjorn as Bompastor's only two senior options in the heart of defence for a large spell, putting a significant workload on the pair.

Throw in Sophie Ingle as well, the veteran midfielder who has also missed the entire campaign, plus a fully-fit Mia Fishel, who only returned from an ACL injury in March, and there are a lot of players who can come back next term to make Chelsea better-placed to compete for a European title.
