Chatara, Ervine and Raza lead Zimbabwe into Super 12s

They finished top of Group B, and will join their neighbours South Africa in Group 2 of the Super 12s

Firdose Moonda21-Oct-2022Zimbabwe 133 for 5 (Ervine 57, Raza 40, Davey 2-16) beat Scotland 132 for 6 (Munsey 54, Chatara 2-14, Ngarava 2-28) by five wicketsZimbabwe had not played in a major ICC tournament in six years coming into this T20 World Cup, but they announced themselves as a team on the comeback trail as they marched into the Super 12s. Craig Ervine led with bat and in the field, as he anchored the Zimbabwean chase after managing his bowlers with pinpoint precision to keep Scotland to a gettable score, while Tendai Chatara and Sikandar Raza also made their experience count with telling contributions. This was only the 11th time in 55 attempts that Zimbabwe had won a T20I while chasing.Asked to field first, Zimbabwe never allowed Scotland to get away from them. Chatara set the tone with a wicket in his first over and finished with figures of 2 for 14 in his four overs. He was well supported by Zimbabwe’s spin trio, who conceded only 46 runs in the eight overs they bowled. George Munsey’s half-century held Scotland together but their highest partnership was just 40 runs – for the third-wicket. Scotland also lacked the sort of turbocharged innings that Raza played to break the back of the chase.Zimbabwe were nervy in reply and were 7 for 2 and 42 for 3 before Ervine and Raza put on 64 for the fourth wicket. Ervine dropped anchor and scored his sixth T20I fifty, and his first at a World Cup, and by the time he was dismissed in the 17th over, Zimbabwe were within touching distance of a win.If Scotland sensed an opening when Ervine fell with 14 needed off the last three overs, Milton Shumba and Ryan Burl shut the door, rotating the strike calmly and finishing the job in just nine balls. Burl hit the winning runs in the 19th over when he lofted Safyaan Sharif over mid-on for fourVictory with more than an over remaining ensured Zimbabwe topped their group. They will join Group 2 in the Super12s, which includes their neighbours South Africa, India and Pakistan.Holding on with both hands
Zimbabwe’s fielding has not always held up in pressure moments but they were committed to cause in this match. When Michael Jones sliced the last ball of Chatara’s opening over over cover, Raza ran back from the ring and took the catch over his shoulder as he tumbled onto the turf, to give Zimbabwe their first incision. Three overs later, Matthew Cross pulled a Richard Ngarava short ball in the direction of Wessly Madhevere at midwicket. Madhevere had to launch himself to his left and took the catch in full flight to leave Scotland 24 for 2 in the fifth over.Later in the innings, Milton Shumba was down on his haunches to take a thigh-high catch off a slog-sweep to dismiss Richie Berrington and got low down on the boundary to take the catch that ended Munsey’s painstaking innings. And Luke Jongwe plucked a chance out of the sky in the final over to send back Calum MacLeod.Sikandar Raza played a key role with ball and bat once again•ICC/Getty ImagesMunsey muscles it…
Scotland were held together by Munsey, who struck seven fours in the first 22 balls he faced with an array of strokes around the wicket. Munsey brought out the flick and the pull, the cut, and three exquisite drives off the Zimbabwean seamers. He hit overpitched deliveries from Blessing Muzarabani through mid-off with power and then smoked Richard Ngarava past extra-cover.… but Zimbabwe keep him quiet
After scoring 33 runs off his first 22 balls, Munsey scored only 21 runs off his next 29 as Zimbabwe’s bowlers squeezed through the middle overs and made it difficult for Scotland to get them away. Zimbabwe bowled nine boundary-less overs as Raza used the variations he has developed in tandem with Sean Williams’ left-arm spin and then Madhevere’s offspin. Chatara and Muzarabani, who were also used in that period, stuck to back-of-a-length balls that did not present any opportunities for big hitting. Between the eighth and 16th overs, Scotland scored only 48 runs.Scotland make the perfect start
With a small total to defend, Scotland could not have asked for a better start, though Zimbabwe’s technique was to blame for their early losses. Regis Chakabva shuffled across and played down the wrong line to Brad Wheal’s third delivery and was given out lbw. He reviewed but ball-tracking showed the impact was in line and the ball would have gone on to clip the bails. In the next over, Madhevere was presented with a juicy half-volley but swung hard with no footwork and played onto his own stumps. Zimbabwe were 7 for 2 in the second over.Sikandar’s sixes
Scotland did not hit a single six in their innings, and there were none in the first 31.5 overs of the match before Raza, the man who seems to be able to do almost anything at the moment, sent MacLeod over the midwicket boundary and barely broke a sweat. Two overs later, he did it again when he sent Michael Leask over the covers. Before Raza’s first six, Zimbabwe required 63 runs off 49 deliveries; after his second one 43 runs off 41 balls, which is how much his innings allowed pressure to evaporate from Zimbabwe’s effort.

Pereira can unearth the next Gibbs-White in teen Wolves gem

Wolverhampton Wanderers sold Morgan Gibbs-White in the summer of 2022 to newly promoted Nottingham Forest, who were splashing the cash to ensure survival.

The deal was worth around £42.5m, meaning the Old Gold received a substantial profit on the youngster, who had been developed by Wolves since he was a teenager.

Morgan Gibbs-White’s Wolves statistics

The Englishman is one of the key members of Nuno Espírito Santo’s squad as Forest have reached the dreamlike heights of third in the Premier League, registering nine goal contributions in just 20 games.

Despite showing plenty of promise as a teenager at Molineux, making a total of 88 appearances for the club in all competitions, he only managed to score three times for the first team.

This was a stark contrast to his goalscoring feats for both the youth teams at the club and during his loan spell with Sheffield United during the 2021/22 campaign.

This temporary spell saw Gibbs-White score 12 goals as he helped lead the Blades to the Championship playoffs.

His development of late meant the 25-year-old even won his first England cap, featuring against the Republic of Ireland in September 2024.

Vitor Pereira will be hoping the Wolves’ academy can produce another player of this talent, but this time, retain his services rather than selling him for profit.

Might the Portuguese boss have a youngster right under his nose who could be their next Gibbs-White?

Wolves could unearth their next Morgan Gibbs-White

One thing that Pereira must make a priority during his spell with the Old Gold is to bring through more youngsters to the first team.

Under Gary O’Neil last season, only a handful of academy graduates made an appearance for the club, including Nathan Fraser and Leon Chiwome.

Nathan-fraser-wolves

Conor McLeod certainly looks like the next best thing to make waves in the academy, especially with his penchant for scoring.

In just 22 matches for the club in the U18 Premier League, McLeod netted six times, while he has continued this rich vein of form in front of goal into the current season.

Indeed, his strike rate is much more effective throughout 2024/25. In just ten league games, the 18-year-old has already found the back of the five times, chipping in with a couple of assists too.

This works out as a goal every 118 minutes for the U18 side, which isn’t a bad return at all for someone who operates in the heart of the midfield.

Not one for scoring simple goals, the teenager netted a free-kick against Blackburn Rovers, described as “sublime” by the official account of the Wolves’ academy back in August 2024.

McLeod still has plenty of development to do in the next 12 months, but if he keeps this sort of form going, then Pereira may find it hard to ignore the teenage sensation.

Some minutes in the first team wouldn’t hurt his development, as the Old Gold look to unearth their next version of Gibbs-White from the academy.

Friday's relegation battle between the two sides saw Hofmann and goalkeeper Kevin Muller both hospitalised after some nasty collisions. Hofmann crashed into Marvin Pieringer and was taken to hospital where it emerged he had suffered a broken rib and a collapsed lung. Bochum admitted the injury was "potentially life-threatening." Muller was also seriously injured and taken to hospital after being stretchered off. The goalkeeper was knocked unconscious after colliding with Ibrahima Sissoko and suffered a concussion.

AdvertisementWHAT BOCHUM SAID

The club offered more detail on Hoffman in a statement: "Philipp Hofmann suffered a serious injury during VfL Bochum 1848's away game in Heidenheim. The VfL striker suffered a broken rib after a collision with his opponent Marvin Pieringer, with the rib piercing the pleura and causing a collapsed lung – a potentially life-threatening injury. Hofmann owes it only to the careful first aid and immediate examinations and actions at the local hospital that nothing more serious happened. A minor operation using chest drainage relieved the injury, restoring lung function. 'Hoffi' will remain in the hospital for observation and treatment until he is fit to be transported. VfL Managing Director Dirk Dufner visited him in the hospital this morning and conveyed the team's best wishes for a speedy recovery, which has since begun its journey home. For Philipp Hofmann, the injury means he will no longer be able to support the team on the pitch this season. We wish our number 33 all the best – 'Hoffi', you are a fighter, you can do it!"

Hofmann has spent the majority of his career in the Bundesliga but did enjoy two years with Brentford between 2015 and 2017. He joined Bochum on a free transfer in 2022 and has been a regular this season for Dieter Hecking's side. Friday's game ended in a 0-0 draw which leaves Bochum bottom of the table and looking destined for relegation. Heidenheim sit four points above Bochum and currently occupy the relegation playoff spot.

Nicholas Pooran steps down as West Indies white-ball captain

“I believe it is in the best interests of the team, as I need to focus on what I can deliver as a player”

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Nov-2022Nicholas Pooran has stepped down as white-ball captain of West Indies following the team’s first-round exit from the 2022 T20 World Cup, Cricket West Indies has confirmed.Pooran had taken over the captaincy from Kieron Pollard in May earlier this year. Under his captaincy since he took over full-time, West Indies won just four out of 15 ODIs and four out of 15 T20Is. In the T20 World Cup, West Indies, who came into the tournament as two-time champions, were stunned by Scotland in the opener and then went on to lose against Ireland, finishing the tournament with just one win – against Zimbabwe – and crashing out in the first round.”I have given the captaincy a great deal of thought since the enormous disappointment of the T20 World Cup,” Pooran said. “I took on the role with great pride and dedication and have given it absolutely everything over the past year. The T20 World Cup is something that must not define us and I will readily get involved in the upcoming reviews. And whilst it will be several months until we reconvene as a squad, I want to give CWI plenty of time to prepare for the matches against South Africa in March and beyond.”This is not me giving up. I remain ambitious and still view the captaincy of West Indies cricket as an honour that is bestowed upon you. There is no doubt I remain fully committed to West Indies cricket and I look forward to providing my services as a senior player in a supportive role.”Pooran’s own form has been a concern in recent times. He has scored just 94 runs in his last 10 innings in T20Is and finished the T20 World Cup with scores of 5, 7 and 13.”By stepping down now as the West Indies white ball captain I believe it is in the best interests of the team and for me personally, as I need to concentrate on what I can deliver to the side as a player,” he said. “I desperately want us to be successful and the most value I can give to the team is through fully focusing on the role of consistently scoring runs at crucial times.”Jimmy Adams, CWI director of cricket, said: “On behalf of CWI I want to thank Nicholas for his time leading our white ball teams. Having spoken with him I know he remains fully committed to West Indies cricket and I am convinced he has a big role to play in our future.”In Pollard’s absence last year, Pooran, who was vice-captain that year, had led West Indies to a 4-1 T20I series win against Australia. He was elevated to captain after Pollard announced his retirement from international cricket in April.Pooran was also recently released by Sunrisers Hyderabad, who had bought him for INR 10.75 crore this year, ahead of the 2023 IPL auction set to take place on December 23.CWI, however, is yet to announce Pooran’s replacement in both formats. Rovman Powell is currently the vice-captain of the T20I side while Shai Hope holds the position in ODIs.West Indies’ next white-ball series is in March 2023 against South Africa, where they will play three ODIs and three T20Is following the two-Test series.

49ers hold internal talks over move to sign £25m ace for Leeds if promoted

Internal talks over signing a “special” number 10 have been held at Leeds United ahead of the summer transfer window, according to a recent report.

Leeds news and updates

There is still a lot of football to be played between now and the end of the season, but with the Whites looking on course to seal a return to the Premier League, plans behind the scenes will be starting to take shape as they prepare for the likelihood of top-flight football next season.

Cost £7m, now worth more than Solomon: Leeds struck gold on "top-class" ace

Leeds United have completed some phenomenal business in the market over the last couple of years.

ByEthan Lamb Feb 13, 2025

This week Daniel Farke stated that discussions over new contracts for the soon-to-be free agents have yet to begin. Sam Byram, Junior Firpo, and Josuha Guilavogui’s contracts are all set to expire at the end of the season, and Farke revealed that talks will be held at the right time.

Meanwhile, ahead of the summer transfer window, it has been reported that Manor Solomon could be available for a permanent transfer. The winger is currently on loan at Elland Road from Tottenham Hotspur, and it’s been claimed that he would be allowed to leave on a permanent basis in the summer if an opportunity is presented.

Solomon has made a big impact since joining Leeds, being a key player in their attack, as he was crowned the club’s player of the month in January.

Leeds hold internal talks over move to sign £25m ace

Solomon is not the only player the Whites have their eyes on ahead of the summer, as according to TEAMtalk, Leeds have held internal talks over a move to sign James McAtee from Manchester City if they are promoted to the Premier League.

Manchester City'sJamesMcAteecelebrates after the match

The report states that the Championship outfit will prioritise signing a new number 10 in the summer, with interest remaining in Emi Buendia, who was a target during January but ended up joining Bayer Leverkusen instead. As well as Buendia, Leeds also hold interest in Eduard Spertsyan, Gustavo Hamer and McAtee, who could be available for a loan move next season.

Before this campaign, McAtee enjoyed two rather successful loan spells at Sheffield United, and instead of going on loan again, Man City decided to keep him at the Etihad this season. However, the midfielder has only played 16 times for the Blues, struggling to make an impact in the starting XI.

The 22-year-old has failed to start in the Premier League or Champions League, with the majority of his game time coming in the FA Cup.

Given his lack of game time this season, City could decide to let McAtee leave on loan in the summer, or they could even decide to cash in, but it would cost Leeds and any other interested team £25 million to secure his services that way. Despite not playing regularly, McAtee has been labelled “special” by Pep Guardiola this season.

“I’m so happy for him; he’s a special player,” Guardiola said of McAtee after his hat-trick against Salford City.

Alice Capsey suffers broken collarbone in fielding accident

Heavy fall in outfield in Antigua causes early end to tour of Caribbean

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Dec-2022England Women have suffered a major injury setback at the start of their tour of the Caribbean, with Alice Capsey sustaining a broken collarbone after landing heavily in the field during the first ODI in Antigua on Sunday.Capsey, 18, had been promoted to open the batting for the first time, making 17 from 13 balls, but is set to fly home from the UK and is now a serious doubt for the rest of England’s winter engagements, including the T20 World Cup in South Africa in February.”Alice Capsey sustained an injury on the field during the first ODI against West Indies Women,” read an ECB statement. “Upon further examination, she has broken her left collar bone and will be unavailable for the remainder of the tour. Capsey will now return home to the UK.”The injury occurred as Capsey dived at fine leg to intercept a top-edged hook during England’s 142-run win the first ODI. She was in obvious pain as she remained on the ground for several minutes to receive treatment, but was eventually able to walk from the field before being taken to hospital for further treatment. It’s a major setback both for Capsey personally, but also for England, who had hoped to bed her into her new top-order role, alongside Sophia Dunkley, as part of a new more attacking outlook under the incoming head coach Jon Lewis.Capsey was awarded her first ECB central contract in November, and had just returned from her maiden stint with Melbourne Stars in the Women’s Big Bash.Nat Sciver, the senior allrounder who made her comeback from a three-month mental health break to be named Player of the Match for her decisive innings of 90 off 96 balls, said she and the team were “gutted” for Capsey.”When anyone goes down on the pitch you’re not really sure what’s happened and it’s a weird thing to stand as a group on the pitch and feel sorry for your team-mate, feel sorry for your friend,” Sciver said.”We found out this morning that she’s going home, so just really, really gutted for her. She’ll be back, she’ll be back firing, I’m sure.”It’s a broken collarbone and I don’t know how long that means the recovery time is. She’ll be as gutted as anyone really to be missing out on this trip and I don’t know what that means for the new year.”

The Rondo: Assessing Lamine Yamal and Barcelona's Champions League chances, Juventus' Serie A fate and Christian Pulisic's role in Milan's miserable season

GOAL US writers discuss the Champions League semis, whether Yamal and Raphinha can carry Barca, and Pulisic's mixed campaign

You couldn't have asked for a better duo of first leg ties in the Champions League semifinals. Arsenal and PSG delivered a game full of quality that simmered ahead of what should be a more expansive return fixture.

Barcelona and Inter, meanwhile, was total chaos, brilliant soccer back-to-front, with no room to breathe and no team able to take much from it other than "Lamine Yamal is good." But Raphinha isn't bad either, and Barca showed they can stay alive with the mercurial Ferran Torres up front.

And it all sets up everything nicely this week. Arsenal will have to go for it, which is pretty much the antithesis of the way manager Mikel Arteta views this game. Inter and Barca might not know what the hell to do other than remind the world that yes, "Lamine Yamal is still good."

Outside of UCL, the Serie A season is grinding to a close. Napoli will probably win it, with Inter losing momentum late and Atalanta booked for third. But what about that final Champions League spot? Juve really should have wrapped it up on three or four separate occasions, but a draw with Bologna over the weekend left them ever-so-slightly vulnerable ahead of the last few fixtures.

It now becomes a question of holding on. Oh, and then there's Milan, who have the Coppa Italia final to look forward to, but their league form has been generally woeful. Even with a 2-1 win over Genoa on Monday, Milan sit in ninth in the standings.

GOAL US writers look at the Champions League semis and the final weeks of Serie A in the latest edition of… The Rondo.

AFPWho wins the second leg between Barcelona and Inter?

Tom Hindle: Lamine Yamal notwithstanding, Inter might just do this thing. Barca threw everything they have at them, and still came away with a draw (albeit chaoticly.) The Spanish side have zero fit full backs, Robert Lewandowski on one leg, and that terrifyingly-high defensive line has to show some signs of vulnerability at some point, right? Inter. Narrowly.

Jacob Schneider: Barca seem like a team of destiny with Yamal and Raphinha. There's not much more to say. Inter are brilliant, and the first leg was genuinely the best UCL game of the year – but there's a certain feeling around Barca right now, and it's hard to not picture them making their way to the final.

Ryan Tolmich: All we can hope for is a second leg that's half as good as the first. That first game was one of the best spectacles we've seen this late in the competition, so credit to both teams for going for it. Inter really had Barca on the ropes, though, and their inability to put them away might just come back to bite them. Raphinha and Yamal are too dynamic, Pedri is too good and Barca are favorites to go out and score more goals in the second leg.

Alex Labidou: Barca should have enough to push Inter aside, even though Nerazzurri showed they aren't the massive underdogs everyone was expecting them to be. Barcelona will be the final in Munich.

AdvertisementAFPCan Arsenal complete a comeback against PSG?

TH: Did somebody say "remontada?" Honestly, why not? Arsenal sort of just deserve it at this point. They played pretty well in the first leg without midfield lynchpin Thomas Partey holding it down, and on their day are a really difficult matchup for anyone. If they score an early goal, this gets really interesting. PSG aren't going to set up to defend, and it could quite easily become a frantic shootout – something neither coach will want. Arsenal play in the UCL final and lose heroically. Yum.

JS: Probably not. PSG are really impressive at the moment, and their midfield is just incredibly hard to break down. With the form Ousmane Dembele is in, it's hard to see Arsenal mounting a comeback – especially in France.

RT: Can they? Sure. PSG certainly have their flaws. The French side is incredible going forward, but they rely on Gianluigi Donnarumma's heroics a bit too much. On the other side and, if he isn't on his A-game, the ball could certainly find the back of the net. PSG, though, are certainly favored to hold on – or even tack on a few more goals. Their attack is too talented to be kept quiet, which means Arsenal will likely need to get multiple goals if they want to reach the final.

AL: The Gunners have enough talent to pull off a rally in Paris, but will they? PSG appear to be a team of destiny right now and they'll find a way to contain Mikel Arteta's side at the Parc des Princes.

Getty Images SportDoes Juventus qualify for the UCL next season?

TH: Probably, but it's hard to say they really deserve it. Napoli, Inter and Atalanta have been Serie A's three best teams by some distance this season, while everyone else is just varying degrees of mediocre. Sixpoints from their last three games would do it, and with Lazio, Udinese and Venezia on the slate, you'd back them to get the job done. A Roma return to the Champions League, though, would be far more poetic and better for the #content.

JS: If they win out, yes. The big match will be against Lazio. If they can secure three points there, the odds are in their favor. Then, it's Udinese and Venezia to close out.

RT: Agreed. if Juve can get a result against Lazio, they should be fine. This past weekend will feel like a missed opportunity, though, as a win over Bologna would have done wonders for their hopes. It won't be one point gained, but rather two points lost, and that's the way they'll feel the rest of the way. Lazio is a must-win, as are easier matchups against Udinese and Venezia. There's no more room for error and, if they can survive this weekend, they'll have smoother sailing.

AL: It will be close. Roma are determined, but Juventus should get things done. Outside of what should be a tough fixture against Lazio, the Old Lady have two very winnable games against 12th-placed Udinese and relegation-threatened Venezia. Roma's road to the UCL is much tougher, facing third-place Atalanta, a Milan side that is still chasing any form of European qualification and a feisty mid-table team in Torino. None of those scream "easy win." Advantage, Juventus.

Getty Images SportHow much blame falls on Pulisic for Milan's misery?

TH: He's not to blame, but there is a nagging feeling that Pulisic can always offer that little bit more. He has probably pieced together about 75% of a great season, a couple of knocks and barren spells slowing him down. There's also the largely unspoken issue here: if Pulisic is indeed good, why does he not have a guaranteed position? And why is he moved around so much to accommodate for others? Maybe some things just don't need reading into, but no singular club manager has ever trusted him to be the main man. Something is up.

JS: When you are a star, there are expectations. Factor in that he is American, and there's even more expectation. Based on the first half of the campaign, fans may have expected a bit more this spring. But in reality, a lot of their star attackers have let them down.

RT: Literally none. Pulisic and Tijani Reijnders are the only two players in the team that can hold their heads high this season. It's certainly worth wondering how much worse it would be without Pulisic, who carried Milan to one trophy in January and could still lead the club to one more before the season comes to a close.

AL: None. Soccer isn't the same as basketball, where stat padding can directly impact a team's performance if things aren't efficient. Yes, Pulisic hasn't met the highs he did at the start of the season, but one could argue that the instability around Milan – hiring two managers this season – is at fault. Milan opened the season wanting him to play as No. 10 under Paulo Fonseca and then shifted him to a more direct winger role under Sergio Conceicao. Had Milan stuck with Stefano Pioli or didn't cut bait with Fonseca so quickly, Pulisic would have had an even stronger campaign. Milan's woe is entirely based on poor management decisions.

Man Utd considering first offer to sign £53k-p/w ace who may replace Onana

As Andre Onana continues to struggle at Old Trafford, Manchester United have reportedly turned towards a new La Liga target who could replace their error-prone shot-stopper.

Man Utd transfer news

Following a debut season to forget, Onana initially got off to a solid start in the current campaign before mistakes once again began to creep into his game as Ruben Amorim arrived. With a new system in front of him, the former Inter Milan star received less protection than ever and even the thought of a clean sheet seems nothing more than a fantasy.

Mistakes in both the Europa League and against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League haven’t helped Onana’s case, however, and he’s arguably on the list of players Manchester United must replace at the first chance they get this summer.

Amid such financial loss in the last year or so, however, it’s likely that INEOS will have to sell before they can welcome any upgrades, which could include a replacement for Onana.

According to reports in Spain, Manchester United are now considering an offer to sign Juan Musso from Atletico Madrid this summer. The shot-stopper has been forced to play second fiddle behind the impressive and experienced Jan Oblak this season, but could now find himself competing for a starting place at Old Trafford.

Man Utd ready to trigger £62.5m star's release clause if Garnacho leaves

Man United already have their eye on a replacement for Garnacho should he be sold in the summer.

ByBrett Worthington Feb 21, 2025

Already 30 years old, United would be signing experience rather than a rising star which would likely split opinion. Given the current state of Amorim’s side, adding an ageing option may not solve United’s problems for very long. Instead, Musso would be papering over the cracks rather than setting the Red Devils back on course.

Man Utd should avoid Musso gamble

If the Red Devils want to take their seat back at Europe’s top table, then signing Atletico Madrid’s second-choice goalkeeper is not the way they should be going about it. Whilst the £53,000-a-week shot-stopper does have experience, it’s questionable whether he would be an instant upgrade on Onana and the last thing United need is further doubt between the sticks.

Juan Musso for Atletico Madrid.

Instead, INEOS would be better off sticking to their transfer strategy of welcoming rising stars rather than those gradually moving past the peak of their powers. There’s little doubt that they could do with an upgrade on Onana, but it must be the right option.

On course for a mid-table finish in the Premier League, INEOS are in for their biggest window yet in charge of Manchester United. Losing money and making harsh cuts as a result to steal headlines for all the wrong reasons, Sir Jim Ratcliffe simply cannot afford to get things wrong once again.

Whether that means Onana will remain Amorim’s goalkeeper of choice will certainly be interesting to see, as the former Sporting Club boss desperately seeks upgrades across his squad. The Red Devils are likely to be the club to watch when the summer arrives.

Boland's rise has him locked in for Brisbane

Barring a late change, Michael Neser will miss out on his home ground

Tristan Lavalette13-Dec-2022After tearing through West Indies with the pink ball under lights, cementing his reputation as a fan favourite, Scott Boland has been assured of a spot in Australia’s star-studded attack for the first Test against South Africa as captain Pat Cummins prepares to return from a quad injury.Playing his first Test match since a starring role in last summer’s Ashes, Boland set the Adelaide Oval alight late on day three of the second Test with three wickets in an over to rekindle memories of his remarkable 6 for 7 against England at the MCG 12 months ago.Having taken 21 wickets at an astonishing average of just 10.33 from four Tests, Boland has become Australia’s fourth pace bowler behind incumbents Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.Related

But swing specialist Michael Neser, also recalled in Adelaide in his first Test since debuting against England a year ago, put his hand up with a terrific five-wicket haul in a performance marked by relentless accuracy. While Hazlewood has been ruled out with a side strain, Cummins is on track to play in the first Test in Brisbane starting on December 17. His likely availability has caused a headache for Australia’s selectors faced with the difficult choice between Boland and Neser, who particularly enjoys bowling on his home ground at the Gabba. But Boland has been given the nod to confirm his standing as Australia’s next in line paceman.”Expecting Scott to take that spot at the Gabba. That’s the running line, and he’s done nothing wrong,” Australia coach Andrew McDonald said. “His record is amazing at the moment, so he’ll take his place and the assumption is that Pat does play. So you’ve got Cummins, Starc and Boland, with [Cameron] Green and [Nathan] Lyon to support around that.”Having already delivered several iconic spells in his brief Test career, 33-year-old Boland has become an unlikely cult hero.”There is an expectation now because it’s not just an outlier, it’s happening every time. But it’s fantastic to see the crowd embrace him,” McDonald said. “It’s not too often you get a Victorian embraced at the Adelaide Oval, so that was great to see.”While his immediate focus is on an expected gruelling series against South Africa, Boland’s status in the upcoming BBL season is unknown having departed Hobart Hurricanes. Whether he surfaces as a replacement player later in the season will hinge on his workload against South Africa.”It’s Scott’s decision, and we respect all the players that opt in or opt out for differing reasons,” McDonald said. “His summers are unknown as that fourth quick in amongst the pack.”So I think it will be assessed and see where he’s at, how many Test matches he plays and where his body’s at. I thought last summer he was outstanding in those three Test matches, but he was fatigued at the end of that.”It’s a huge burden, so I think he’ll just see where he’s at to make a decision later. He’d be pretty good in the Big Bash though.”Amid an arduous schedule of five Tests this summer in 40 days, ahead of major tours to India and England next year, injuries to Cummins and Hazlewood have underlined the importance of Australia’s deep pool of reserve quicks with Western Australian tearaway Lance Morris also in the squad.”It’s just a reality, the games keep coming,” McDonald said. “Last year it was Covid and injuries as well, so it wasn’t by design [the number of quicks in the squad] nor has it been this early in the summer. “The short turnarounds, the nature of it….it’s just a huge demand.”

Due to the honour, Caicedo missed his team's training session on the eve of their Conference League semi-final clash with Djurgardens. The London side are 4-1 up on aggregate from the first leg before the return fixture at Stamford Bridge on Thursday.

AFPWHAT MARESCA SAID

Enzo Maresca said on Wednesday that his team have no fresh injury concerns heading into the game, with young striker Marc Guiu possible returning.

"Everyone is fit and Marc Guiu could even be involved in tomorrow’s squad. We are not sure yet, we will make a decision on him, but he is getting closer," he told reporters. "Maybe it’s better for Marc to have a few more days of training, but he is very close to being back with us. That will be very good news for us and for Marc."
