Celtic: Ange drops Kyogo injury update

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has dropped a worrying injury update on Kyogo Furuhashi.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by the Daily Record, the 56-year-old Bhoys boss appeared to backtrack on recent comments made regarding the centre-forward’s recovery from a hamstring injury, in which the Greek-Australian coach claimed that the 27-year-old “won’t be far off” making a return to first-team action.

However, in his latest injury update, Postecoglou appeared to contradict this claim, stating that “Kyogo is nowhere near it [making a return to training].”

Fans will be devastated

Considering just how much Kyogo has revolutionised the Celtic attack since his £4.6m move to Parkhead last summer, the news that the striker is still some way off making a return to first-team football is sure to have left Bhoys fans devastated – particularly after Postecoglou’s initial update on the forward.

Indeed, over his 14 Premiership outings this season, the £4.95m-rated centre-forward has been in remarkable form for the Hoops, having bagged eight goals, registered two assists and created four big chances for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 2.1 shots and making 1.1 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the £18k-per-week Japan international average a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.03 in the league, however, the centre-forward has also been in fine goalscoring form over his 12 appearances in the domestic and European cup competitions, scoring a further eight goals and providing three assists – taking his total haul to 16 goals and five assists in just 26 games.

As such, it is clear for all to see that the fact that Kyogo looks set to remain on the sidelines for the near future will come as a huge blow to Celtic’s hopes of going on to reclaim their Premiership crown this season – with failure to do so being an outcome that would undoubtedly leave everyone involved with the Bhoys gutted.

Everton injury update on Vitaliy Mykolenko

Everton made it through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup last night after beating Boreham Wood 2-0 at Goodison Park thanks to a brace from Salomon Rondon.

The Toffees were hit with a potential blow in the match after left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko, who captained the Merseyside club on the night, was forced off in the second half with a suspected injury issue.

Now that the dust has settled, though, it seems that the Everton fans can breathe a sigh of relief on the matter.

What’s the news?

After the match, journalist Patrick Boyland relayed comments from Frank Lampard, who revealed that the Ukraine international suffered a dead leg, which is why he had to come off after 60 minutes as Seamus Coleman replaced him.

The 22-year-old recorded one key pass and one shot on target before coming off, also winning four duels and making two tackles and two interceptions as he ultimately earned himself a solid overall match rating of 7.2/10 from SofaScore. Therefore, it’s safe to say that the Toffees boss and the club’s fans will be happy to hear that Mykolenko’s knock was not a serious one.

Since arriving at Goodison Park in January after joining from Dynamo Kiev in a deal worth a reported £20m, the defender has made just four appearances for Lampard’s side.

With the Merseyside club set to take on Tottenham on Monday night in their next attempt at moving away from the Premier League relegation zone, Mykolenko could be a vital figure for his team if he’s fit enough to play and can be a strong defensive figure while also offering a threat going forward.

However, having spent their two previous league games as an unused substitute, it’ll be interesting to see whether or not Lampard decides to start the 22-year-old against Antonio Conte’s side.

Either way, it’s still a relief to hear that it was just a dead leg which forced him off against Boreham Wood rather than something which could have kept him sidelined for a significant period of time. With Everton fighting to stay in the top division, their manager will need as many options available to him as possible to help avoid the dreaded drop.

Injury expert makes key Bamford claim

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford’s imminent return from a long-term injury is ‘huge’ news, says injury expert Ben Dinnery.

The Lowdown: Bamford closing in on return

The 28-year-old was superb for Leeds last season, scoring 17 times in the Premier League and proving to be an attacking talisman for his side.

Unfortunately, Bamford’s 2021/22 campaign has been a hugely frustrating one, with injuries limiting him to just five starts in the league overall.

Leeds have been boosted by the news that the striker is now back in training, however, suggesting his return to the fold is not too far away.

The Latest: Dinnery reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, Dinnery, a contributor for Sky Sports, was excited after hearing of the striker’s imminent return:

“The hope is he’ll play some part in the run-in. There’s no getting away from the fact they have missed a central striker, someone to put the ball in the back of the net.

“His absence has been felt keenly. Even in that brief cameo against Brentford a while ago, he managed to get on the scoresheet. That just shows that strikers know how to be in the right place at the right time. Getting that back, this will be huge for Leeds.

“Is he going to be fully fit and firing on all cylinders for the run-in? Absolutely not, given the fact that he has missed most of the season through injury.

“But will he be able to contribute and score goals? Yes, absolutely.”

The Verdict: Relegation-deciding moment?

Bamford’s importance to this side is arguably up there with Kalvin Phillips – Jurgen Klopp has hailed him as ‘exceptional’ – considering the manner in which he led the line before his injury setbacks.

Not only is the Englishman a regular source of end product, but he also links up with teammates superbly, bringing them into the game and creating space for others.

New Leeds boss Jesse Marsch will no doubt be desperate to get Bamford back into his team as soon as possible, as his side face a huge relegation battle in the next few months. He could be the difference between them staying up or returning to the Championship, such is his importance.

Leeds: Source drops Kalvin Phillips update

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has been told ‘we will get you to Liverpool’ by an agency, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Agency switch?

Phillips revealed towards the end of 2021 that he wanted a new Elland Road deal, but as we know, that is yet to materialise, with his current contract running to 2024.

The England international is currently represented by Kevin Sharp, however, former Leeds man Danny Mills has recently claimed Phillips is set to switch agents, potentially leading to a blockbuster summer move.

He has been linked with a move for Liverpool for some time, with reports at the beginning of the year suggesting Jurgen Klopp’s side were weighing up a £33.2m bid.

The Latest: Liverpool links

Football Insider shared an update regarding Phillips on Wednesday morning after being informed by a recruitment source.

They claimed that some of the biggest agents in the game are offering him the connections to seal a huge move, with one privately telling the Leeds star ‘we will get you to Liverpool’.

The Verdict: A worry…

Sources have told Football Insider that Leeds value the 26-year-old at £70m, however, if the Whites drop down to the Championship, you would expect that would drop slightly.

It is a worry to know that agents already appear to be in Phillips’ ear ahead of the summer window, and with a new Elland Road deal yet to be signed, it seems as if an exit could be on the cards even if Jesse Marsch keeps Leeds up.

Phillips may still have a part to play in helping Leeds guarantee their Premier League status, with the holding midfielder possibly returning from injury after the international break, so it seems as if he has a big few months ahead both on and off the pitch.

Newcastle must complete deal to sign Neymar

PIF are plotting their moves ahead of the summer transfer window as they prepare to take Newcastle United to the next level by snapping up talent.

They made a number of moves in January to give the club the best chance to stay in the Premier League, signing Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Matt Targett, Bruno Guimaraes and Chris Wood. This has led to the side moving out of the bottom three and nine points clear of relegation, having lost just two of their last 11 matches.

The Magpies have now been linked with an ambitious swoop to sign PSG winger Neymar at the end of the season to bolster Eddie Howe’s squad further.

Rocking

St. James’ Park will be rocking if PIF somehow manages to pull off this sensational deal as it would represent a major change in the power structure of the Premier League.

Neymar is the most expensive player in history and Newcastle bringing him in would show that they have the pull to bring in the best players in the world to compete with the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea. It would prove that they are serious about becoming a powerhouse in England and send shockwaves around the division as other top clubs look on in envy.

The Brazilian gem, who was once dubbed a “once-in-a-generation” player by David Beckham, was previously showered with praise by former Premier League forward Diego Forlan as the retired goalscorer said:

“Neymar is one of the best strikers in the world, playing in football’s best club team. He scores goals, he makes assists, he gets past players, he produces magic when he gets the ball. I could continue to compliment him because Neymar has lived up to the hype.

“Other Brazilians who’ve gone to Europe haven’t always settled so quickly. Neymar has. He’s going to get better and I suspect he’ll be the best in the world in a few years.”

Have his performances on the pitch lived up to the words around him? His 330 goals and assists in 323 matches for PSG and Barcelona combined, along with 70 strikes in 116 games for Brazil, suggest that they have as he has consistently delivered in the final third at a phenomenal rate throughout his career.

His immense quality at the top end of the pitch and his excellent reputation in the game – as shown by Forlan and Beckham’s comments – are two reasons why St. James’ Park would be rocking if PIF secure a deal for Neymar, along with what it would mean for the landscape of the Premier League. This is why the Saudi Arabian consortium must do all they can to get this move over the line…

Man United could lose out on Ten Hag

Manchester United have been stepping up their pursuit for the new manager that they are hoping to appoint to join Old Trafford this summer, however there could be a huge setback emerging already for the club as their front-runner is being chased by other clubs.

What’s the word?

The Daily Mail are reporting that Erik Ten Hag has spoken to two other European clubs with regular Champions League football, and has a firm offer from one of the clubs that he is interested in.

The Ajax boss is said to have had an interview on Monday with the powers at Manchester United, but is understood to not be the only candidate who has been engaging in ongoing discussions with club chief executive, Richard Arnold and his team, according to the report.

Supporters will be worried

There is no doubt that Ten Hag has been a solid favourite for the challenging managerial position at Old Trafford amongst supporters ever since Ole Gunnar Solksjaer was sacked last November.

The 52-year-old is currently committed to managing his Dutch side, Ajax, but is clearly open to a new challenge if reports are to be believed with him being connected to a number of clubs, and with news emerging that the manager is attracting attention elsewhere it will surely worry Man United supporters as the club competes to seal the deal.

The achievements and progression that Ten Hag has made at his current club is clearly the reason he has become one of the most sought after managers, impressively reaching a Champions League semi-final in 2019 with Ajax and since then has won two Eredivisie titles and two KNVB Cups, with this winning mentality something that the Manchester giants are desperate for.

The Red Devils manager decision is expected to be finalised imminently as the club works to rebuild their status and get back to winning ways as they are set to suffer their longest trophy drought in four decades, and gaining clarity on who will be the future manager could inspire a more settling atmosphere at the club as Ralf Rangnick sets to see out a disappointing season, after crashing out of all competitions.

Celtic: Ange handed huge Old Firm boost

Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic have been handed a huge boost ahead of their upcoming Premiership clash on Sunday.

What’s the talk?

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Old Firm encounter (via BBC Sport), Gers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst revealed that, after being sent home from international duty with Colombia due to a thigh injury, Alfredo Morelos has not only been ruled out of his club’s meeting with Celtic but could also miss most of the remainder of the season as a result of his knock.

Regarding the 25-year-old’s setback, the Dutchman said: “Unfortunately, he won’t be with us on Sunday, we won’t have him back in the next couple of weeks that’s for sure. I think a long-term injury, but we don’t know how long yet Hopefully we can give more news after the weekend.”

Postecoglou will be buzzing

Considering just how important Morelos has been to Rangers this season, the news that the striker will be unavailable for selection this weekend, and for a number of his team’s remaining league fixtures, is sure to have left Ange Postecoglou buzzing.

Indeed, over his 26 Premiership appearances in the current campaign, the £11.7m-rated hitman has been in breathtaking form for the Gers, bagging 12 goals, registering seven assists and creating nine big chances for his team-mates, also taking 4.3 shots and making two key passes per game.

These returns have seen the £31.5k-per-week forward average a sensational SofaScore match rating of 7.32, ranking him as the seventh-best player in the Scottish top flight.

As such, it is clear to see that Rangers being without their talismanic centre-forward on Sunday could greatly improve Celtic’s chances of securing what could well be a season-defining victory at Ibrox. With just six games left of the Premiership season to play after tomorrow’s meeting, the Light Blues closing a six-point gap at the top of the table would be a near-impossible feat in such a short space of time, particuarly with the Hoops landing a huge psychological direct blow.

Postecoglou makes Furuhashi claim

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has revealed Kyogo Furuhashi was fit and firing at Lennoxtown before Sunday’s win, ultimately deciding the Hoops could win without risking their star man.

The Lowdown: Celtic seal priceless win

The Hoops visited their biggest rivals on Sunday afternoon looking to go six points clear at the top of the table.

It didn’t look like that would be the case when Aaron Ramsey fired Rangers in front early on, but goals from Tom Rogic and Cameron Carter-Vickers earned Celtic a huge and deserved three points.

They did it without Furuhashi, too, with the Japanese starlet having only just recovered from a long-term hamstring issue.

The Latest: Ange provides Kyogo boost

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game (via Republic of Football), Postecoglou confirmed that the forward is now fit, even trying to persuade his manager to use him during sessions at Lennoxtown:

“I thought today we could handle it without him. He popped up everywhere in front of me at Lennoxtown to remind he was fit.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-23/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: What a day

It was a memorable three points for Celtic and this news is an added bonus, suggesting Furuhashi is now ready to play a prominent role between now and the end of the season.

The 27-year-old has scored eight goals in 12 league starts in 2021/22 to date, and while he may take time to find his rhythm having not featured in 2022, it shouldn’t be long until he is a regular again, ranking as one of the best eight players in the squad this term (Whoscored).

With Celtic battling in both the league and the Scottish Cup, opportunities should certainly come Furuhashi’s way, even if they come from the bench initially.

Peter Lawwell pins blame on one thing he "cannot accept" as he steps down from Celtic

Celtic non-executive chairman Peter Lawwell is to step down from the board on December 31 after receiving “intolerable” levels of “abuse and threats”.

Lawwell "cannot accept" upset to his family

Current non-executive director Brian Wilson is taking over as interim chairman until a permanent replacement is found.

The decision comes amid fan protests at Celtic’s poor performances this season, as well as their disappointing transfer business in the summer.

“It is with sadness that I announce my decision to stand down as chairman,” Lawwell said before he pinned the blame on fan abuse to the degree of upsetting his family.

“I believe that my 18 years as chief executive and three years as chairman have shown my ability to meet and overcome challenges on many fronts, but abuse and threats from some sources have increased and are now intolerable.

“They have dismayed and alarmed my family. At this stage in my life, I don’t need this. I cannot accept this and so I leave the club I have loved all my life.”

Dermot Desmond also shared a short statement, hailing Lawwell as a driving force behind the 38 cup or title triumphs won during his time at the club: “I am personally very sorry to lose Peter as our Chairman, but I understand and respect his decision, in light of recent events and what he has endured.”

Dundee United captain warns of Celtic threat

Dundee United captain Ross Graham has downplayed Celtic’s form ahead of the clash at at Tannadice on Wednesday.

“I’m not sure there is ever a good time to get Celtic. They are a top team with really high-quality players so we need to be switched on,” he said.

“Look, they are not going to be on this run forever so we can try and make sure it doesn’t change for them.

“Celtic are always a top side no matter what form they are in. Obviously they are on a bad run just now, and probably so ourselves, so it could be a good game on Wednesday night.”

United have not won in seven games but kept their first clean sheet since September 23 when they held Motherwell on Saturday.

Graham has played three of the last four games after missing the start of the season with a hamstring injury and is looking to get United up the William Hill Premiership table.

The 24-year-old defender did however suggest the Hoops will not have it all their own way as Wilfried Nancy seeks his first win in Scotland: “We will focus on ourselves because we know how much we can hurt them.”

Alan Pardew slams pitch surface

Alan Pardew has criticised the quality of Maritimo’s pitch after both teams fired blanks in a lethargic goalless draw.

The uneven surface was a definite factor in the Toon Army’s slow start in Portugal, but despite this Pardew still believes his side did enough to win.

The ex-West Ham boss stated to The Journal, “I thought the pitch was of a very poor standard. Both teams suffered from it.

“But I’m probably the happier of the two managers as we didn’t suffer any more injuries. The performance of the team was outstanding.

“The first ten minutes of the game I thought they were in control and I am disappointed we didn’t get the win with the chances we had at the end.”

Pleased to pick up an away point the 51 year old now has the relief of knowing his next two European ties are at home, with Bordeaux and Club Brugge next up in the Europa League.
