Borini off? Liverpool should probably get rid of this lot too

It has been a busy summer already at Anfield as Liverpool have been working hard to get their squad ready for the upcoming campaign.

The transfer window has only just creaked open and manager Brendan Rodgers has already completed the bulk of his summer business by signing six first-team players. The Reds have now completed moves for Danny Ings, James Milner, Nathaniel Clyne, Joe Gomez, Adam Bogdan and Roberto Firmino, yet Rodgers is still on the hunt for more fresh talent.

Premier League sides are required to submit a squad of no more than 25 players for the campaign, and given the additions, Rodgers is going to need to offload a number of players before the season starts.

The first name out the door is likely to be striker Fabio Borini, who has been heavily linked with a move back to Italy to join Lazio. Borini has been a fringe player for Liverpool since his arrival back in 2012, failing to make any impact in the first-team, and although there are suggestions he may not have agreed terms with the Rome side yet, he’s clearly not wanted at Anfield.

One thing is for certain, though, the player is not likely to be the only one out the door on the red half of Merseyside, and here are FOUR more Liverpool need to move on before the season starts.

[interaction id=“none”]

Raheem Sterling

Enough is Enough with Sterling, the player’s contract saga has now spiralled out of control and his position with the Reds has become completely untenable.

Sterling has become a figure of hatred around Liverpool following the announcement earlier this summer of his intention to leave for Manchester City.

This week the situation has intensified with the player stating he does not want to take part in the upcoming pre-season tours of the Far East and Australia, while he also failed to turn up for training, citing illness as his excuse.

The situation has the potential to unsettle everyone at the club and needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later, and with Man City willing to pay more than £40m, judging by their last bid, for the youngster Liverpool need to jump at this opportunity.

Sterling is a good player, but not a world beater. He is rated so highly purely on the potential he has, but potential is not a guarantee of success and Liverpool should maximise the amount of money they can receive by selling this summer.

Ricky Lambert

It is hard not to feel sorry for Lambert, the player has worked himself up through the divisions Football League to the Premier League, and last summer he thought his dreams had come true when his boyhood club Liverpool came knocking, a move he couldn’t turn down.

Unfortunately he has spent the whole of the season as a bit part player. Lambert just hasn’t been given a proper chance at the club, he has fallen behind Daniel Sturridge, Mario Balotelli and Raheem Sterling in the pecking order, picking up most of his minutes in minor fixtures.

Now following the arrival of Danny Ings, Divock Origi and Roberto Firmino the scouser is likely to find his minutes limited even further.

It was a bizarre transfer for Liverpool in the first place – the striker doesn’t fit the tactical set up at the club and you would think after Andy Carroll’s failure that Rodgers would have learnt not to have big target men in his squad.

Lambert needs to move on now for the sake of his international career and has been strongly linked with a move to West Brom this summer. The player would fit in well at The Hawthorns and it is unlikely Liverpool will stand in his way.

When the news broke of the arrival of Balotelli last summer there was so much unhappiness at the deal with the majority of fans seeing the move as a waste of money. However it was a risk that had to be taken, especially at £16m – a low fee for a promising player.

When he wants to play Balotelli is incredible, but the major issue with the Italy international is most of the time he just doesn’t put the effort in. Rodgers believed he could change the troubled striker, but like all those before him, it didn’t work out and now is the time for Liverpool to cut their losses.

Unfortunately for Liverpool it is easier said than done offloading Balotelli, with not many teams willing to take a risk on a player that has often found the headlines for all the wrong reasons during his career.

Balotelli has been linked with numerous moves already this summer, but whether any speculation actually materialises remains to be seen.

Enrique is another player that has been unlucky not to have made more appearances for Liverpool.

When he first moved to Anfield from Newcastle, the left-back established himself as the first choice at the club and made the role his own.

However a number of serious knee injuries have led to the player spending the majority of his time on the treatment table of late, while the arrival of now first choice Alberto Moreno has all but ended his Anfield tenure.

The injuries have clearly had an effect on the Spaniard, both psychologically and on the field, with the player looking half the man he was when he first joined the club.

Rodgers needs to bring in a new understudy to Moreno to replace Enrique, as he isn’t up to the required standard but it could prove difficult finding a new club for the left-back. The player’s contract at Anfield runs out next summer and Rodgers may be forced to keep hold of the defender until then.

Three key battles ahead of Man United v Southampton

Manchester United will face Southampton on Saturday evening’s late kick-off as the Premier League’s final weekend of the year takes on a traditional feel after the strange times of the festive period so far have left most of us losing track of the days.

Those strange kick-off times have also led to some strange performances from Manchester United, however. With no win in three games in all competitions, and only one clean sheet in their last nine, Jose Mourinho’s side come into this weekend’s meeting with Southampton needing something to lift their spirits ahead of a trip to Everton just two days later.

A comprehensive victory over Southampton would do the trick, and round off a mixed bag of a year on a high note, and promising more to come in the new year.

In order to do that, though, they’ll have to overcome a Saints side who have been below par of late, but perhaps buoyed by the fact that they’ve managed to snare £75m for a player who doesn’t really want to be at the club anymore, they can use the sale of Virgil van Dijk as a springboard to build a solid second half of the season upon.

Here’s where the game will be won and lost.

The old-fashioned midfield battle

Ok, so it won’t be a total throwback, but with the possibility of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic taking on Mario Lemina and Oriol Romeu in the middle of the Old Trafford pitch, we can only hope for an old-fashioned midfield battle.

It won’t turn out that way for numerous reasons. One will be squad rotation, and all four players started their respective sides’ last game; indeed only Lemina didn’t play for the full 90 minutes – that might necessitate some rotation. And perhaps the most important reason is that this game will likely see United pummel a deep-seated Southampton side who are keen to make sure that they don’t repeat the defensive mistakes that saw them concede five goals on Boxing Day in their last away trip in the Premier League.

But this will still be a battle to watch carefully, and one which may well decide the game.

If United can get Pogba in enough space, his ability to create and make things happen could be key to United’s ability to break down the Saints’ defence. Meanwhile, it will be up to Lemina and Romeu to stop them. Going the other way, too, Mauricio Pellegrino’s midfielders will need to link up with the pace of Saints’ wingers to hit United on the counter-attack if they’re to have a chance of springing a second upset at Old Trafford in two games. United will need Matic to be at his disruptive best to deal with two of the Premier League’s dangerous yet sometimes underrated box-to-box midfielders.

And even allowing for rotation, this will still be a key factor in the game. Whoever United choose to play in the centre of midfield will be needed to guard against counter-attacks, especially as United’s defence has looked vulnerable of late, keeping just one clean sheet in their last nine. At the other end, they’ll need to play a big role there, too.

For Southampton, protecting the back line is only one job for the midfielders – defending for the whole game won’t do for Pellegrino, who will need his midfielders to be effective in springing counters at the other end.

Can Saints hurt United on the break?

Those counters will be perhaps the key to this game. United’s recent defensive record is one thing, but the fact that their best players who aren’t currently out have played the full 90 minutes so often over the last month or so is also of a concern. That might make Mourinho’s midfield less effective at stopping the counter-attacks, and fatigue can mean attackers make the wrong choices, allowing the opposition to break much more easily.

This works both ways, though. The Christmas period isn’t just tiring to the big teams, and this will be Southampton’s second away trip in four days. If tiredness or mental fatigue stops them from being able to launch their breaks, and make the right decisions once they do, this could turn into a very long afternoon for Pellegrino’s side, who are becoming all-too accustomed to such scenarios.

United’s attack against Saints’ backline

Perhaps having your former club captain sitting on the bench and you have no idea if he’s going to take your place in the heart of the defence isn’t conducive to top quality performances. Maybe that’s one reason why the Van Dijk to Liverpool transfer saga has left Saints somewhat in limbo so far this season. Maybe it even stopped Pellegrino from bringing in proper reinforcements in the summer, simply hoping that the Dutchman would slot back into the heart of the defence without any fuss.

Whatever the case, this could go either of two ways for Southampton. Freed from the limbo the uncertainty around Van Dijk caused, they could be a reinvigorated team excited by the thought of £75m of new recruits in January who actually want to play for the club. Or, on the other hand, they could be further depleted in defence at exactly the worst time.

In recent weeks, Saints have conceded four at home to Leicester – with Van Dijk starting at centre-back – and five away to Tottenham. They’ll be up against a United side who might seem like they’re struggling, but if it weren’t for Manchester City’s thrust at greatness, Mourinho’s side would be well in with a shout of Premier League glory, and are ahead of every other side in the league, after all.

Indeed, United have scored twice in each of their last three Premier League games, despite drawing two of them, and they have only failed to score in two domestic matches all season – once in defeat to Chelsea, and once in a disappointing scoreless draw away to Liverpool. No side in any competition has stopped them from scoring at Old Trafford.

That could make it a tough afternoon for Saints, but the longer they can keep the Red Devils at bay, the more frustrated United could get. And that could leave opportunities on the counter-attack later in the game.

HYS: Which three of the fab four should start vs Arsenal?

Many have put Jurgen Klopp’s recent selections down to simply the rotation that comes with the Premier League’s hectic winter schedule, but there could be a more underlying concern behind Liverpool’s latest line-ups – the compatibility of the fab four in the same starting XI without leaving the Reds too open at the back.

Even if that hasn’t been a factor behind Klopp’s starting XI calls in recent weeks, it will surely be on his mind ahead of a trip to Arsenal this Friday night. The Gunners have won all but one of their nine Premier League fixtures at the Emirates Stadium so far this season, scoring over two goals per match in the process.

So, Liverpool fans, if Klopp can’t afford all of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah on the same pitch, which three of the four should start against the Gunners on Friday? Let us know by voting below, giving your three picks a thumbs up and the last remaining of the quartet a thumbs down.

Bad news for Joe Hart as Adrian cements his position in goal

When Joe Hart signed for West Ham on loan in the summer, it was the fact he had done so alongside his former Manchester City teammate Pablo Zabaleta that seemed to make it so exciting.

Hart has won the Premier League golden glove a record four times from his Manchester City days, and is still England’s number one – though he may not be by the time the next round of international fixtures comes along.

And while Hart might be longing for his days of glory at the Etihad, it was his current side’s trip to his parent club that sealed his current spot on the West Ham bench.

Unable to play, Adrian took up the role between the sticks and gave a great account of himself as his side were unlucky to lose to a rampant Manchester City, who were on course to set a record run of Premier League wins.

Since then, the Spanish goalkeeper has kept his place in the side and done fairly well.

We all knew he was a good goalkeeper, but consistency and concentration were often his let-downs in the past. Since coming in for Hart, the competition seems to have spurred him on. Against Tottenham, he showed it.

To go to Spurs and come away with a result is a difficult thing to achieve these days, especially when you find yourselves in the midst of a relegation dogfight. But that’s exactly what the Hammers did thanks in no small part to their goalkeeper.

You often need luck and help from your keeper to get a point away to Tottenham, and with Adrian, they certainly got the help. He a massive seven saves to help his side to a point, whilst the defence in front of him also deserves praise for the fact that they stuck to their jobs diligently. That Spurs had 31 shots is testament to their quality and the defensive nature of the West Ham performance, but the fact that 14 of those shots were blocked says a lot about the Hammers defence, too.

Adrian, however, was on hand to help when needed.

Though that characterisation of a man involved only on the periphery of the game is an unfair one. The Spanish stopper attempted more passes than any other West Ham player on the night, which is surely a reflection of Tottenham dominance rather than anything else, but for a goalkeeper who is prone to a lapse in concentration, it’s encouraging.

In the same vein, however, his 30% pass accuracy – explained by his long kicked clearances and the fact that only Javier Hernandez and Cheikhou Kouyate were jumping to try to win them – still saw him complete more passes than Winston Reid and Hernandez himself.

Indeed, Adrian had more touches than five West Ham players on the night as the Hammers’ rearguard action was all-encompassing.

But in the end, if defences are solid, they’re helped by whatever trust they have in their goalkeeper behind them, and in Adrian West Ham have a goalkeeper they can trust ore than Hart at the moment.

Benitez turns attentions to talented midfielder as Newcastle United look to improve limited squad

Newcastle United fans here in the Tavern are still looking for the club to build on their solitary signing so far, as they view the transfer window as a possible way to Premier League safety.

Rafa Benitez seemingly continues to ring around clubs as he looks to nail down some more signings this window, as desperate times calls for desperate measures on Tyneside with the possibility of relegation looming. Although, you can’t fault the effort of the Spaniard, as the Magpies seem to have another player on their radar. As according to reports in the El Confidencial, claims suggest that Newcastle United have sent scouts out to Spain to watch Real Betis starlet Fabian Ruiz.

The 21-year-old has been labelled as priceless for current club Real Betis, as one of the most promising young talents to come out of the Spanish top-flight in recent times. However, according to reports, the midfielder has a release clause that is currently set at a measly £13 million, with the Spanish club doing all they can to extend his contract that will allow them to increase in the buyout price. But, with clubs like Barcelona and Arsenal linked with a move for the midfielder, it looks as if he could be living some of his last days with his current club.

Although, arguably the biggest boost for a Newcastle side that would have a limited budget for the potential signing of the midfielder, is that the 21-year-old’s agent doesn’t want the club to increase his release clause which makes him very affordable.

Landlord’s Verdict:

A player that looks to be something special after attracting the interest of some of Europe’s biggest names, and a player that could become a star in his current form for a side of Newcastle’s calibre. Nevertheless, a player that will prove difficult to attract with the money available to competitors, but with the opportunity to immediately progress at St James’ Park this could be a turning point in the transfer saga.

Everton fans discuss Tosun’s difficult situation at Goodison

Everton’s major problem in the first half of the Premier League season was the lack of threat up front.

The club failed to find a direct replacement for Romelu Lukaku, who joined Manchester United in the summer.

The Belgian scored 25 top-flight goals for the Toffees in the 2016-17 campaign, but no player in the squad has come close since he left.

Cenk Tosun was brought in by manager Sam Allardyce in the January transfer window, along with Theo Walcott from Arsenal.

The pair were recruited with the hope of bolstering the team’s attacking options, but one of the new faces has struggled.

Tosun has started two top-flight games and has come off the bench as a substitute in another.

Allardyce is yet to give the Turkish international a full 90 minutes in a match, and according to Sky Sports, the manager has claimed that Tosun is struggling to adapt to the pace of England’s elite league.

Everton fans have now been giving their thoughts about the situation on Twitter.

In Focus: Bellerin and Madrid not a match made in heaven

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has reportedly ‘personally negotiated’ with Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin in order to lure him to the Bernabéu, according to The Guardian.

What’s the story?

There’s been all kinds of rumblings going on behind closed doors at Madrid, not least from Marco Asensio who is pushing for his sale to a Premier League club who actually will want to use him.

Most shocking perhaps has been Ronaldo’s attempt to control the puppet strings in the Madrid boardroom, with reports from Don Balon claiming that Ronaldo has given Pérez a list of players’ names who are not welcome at the club.

What we can infer from all this then is that Bellerin is not on that list and is a high-ranking priority on Pérez’s agenda to turn the club around from a disappointing 2017 season.

What should Madrid do?

Madrid have conceded 26 goals this season in the league, more than twice as many as table-topping Barcelona. Marcelo has been exposed at the centre of the defence and has not been helped by his midfield protection by the likes of Luka Modric and Casemiro.

Hector Bellerin might not be the answer to their defensive frailties. He is a forward thinking player with a high pass success rate of 85%, according to WhoScored, but anyone who has watched Arsenal this year will know that their problems lie in defensive solidity. In fact, the Gunners have the leakiest defence in the Premier League’s top seven sides.

Bellerin is a good player, but him and Madrid are not a match made in heaven.

West Ham may need Andy Carroll for final two Premier League fixtures of the season

According to reports in The Mirror, West Ham United are hopeful that striker Andy Carroll, rated at €10m (£8.8m) by Transfermarkt, could be fit to return for their final two Premier League matches of the season in May.

It was thought that the 29-year-old would miss the rest of the campaign having suffered a hairline fracture to his ankle last month, which The Mirror says wrecked a potential move to the Premier League holders Chelsea before the January transfer window slammed shut.

The centre-forward, who has scored two goals in 12 top flight appearances this term, hasn’t featured for David Moyes’ men since a late substitute outing in their 1-1 draw against London rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on January 4, but the report adds that there is a new belief that he could be back in action in May having undergone a successful operation.

While they will hope not to be, West Ham could still find themselves in a relegation battle when they face Leicester City at the King Power Stadium before hosting Everton at the London Stadium on the final day in May, and they may need their 29-year-old striker to be involved even though Marko Arnautovic has been brilliant in the centre-forward role in his absence.

The Irons currently lie in 12th position and four points above the bottom three following their 2-0 win against Watford last time out, but they face a daunting trip to a free-scoring Liverpool side on Saturday.

In Focus: Tottenham Hotspur can still use Manchester United target Wanyama

Manchester United are keeping a close eye on Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama ahead of the summer transfer window, according to the Daily Mail.

What’s the word?

Wanyama has been at the North London club since 2016 when he signed from Southampton.

The Kenyan international has impressed with his strength in the middle of the park, but he has only managed to start two Premier League games this season, partly due to injuries.

According to the Daily Mail, United are considering their midfield options with Michael Carrick due to retire.

Wanyama is believed to be on their list, while Liverpool have also been touted as potential suitors.

Should Tottenham sell?

The 26-year-old has been a powerhouse in the team’s midfield, but since recovering from injury, the ex-Celtic player has not been selected regularly by manager Mauricio Pochettino.

[ad_pod ]

Eric Dier has taken the defensive midfield role, while Mousa Dembele is the other man in midfield.

Despite getting less minutes, Wanyama still has a role to play in the team, especially when Dier is required to slot back into the defence.

Whether the Kenyan would be willing to eventually play a bit-part role remains to be seen.

One thing is for sure, though, chairman Daniel Levy will not allow the midfielder to go for a cheap price.

Everton provide Sigurdsson injury update

Everton have revealed that Gylfi Sigurdsson could be on the sidelines “for several weeks” with the knee problem that he picked up against Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend.

Sigurdsson picked up the injury in the first match of his team’s 2-0 win at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon, but played on for the full 90 minutes.

The Iceland international will now undergo a scan to determine the extent of the problem, but it has been suggested that the attacker could struggle to play again this season.

A statement on Everton’s official website read:

“Gylfi Sigurdsson will see a specialist this evening to determine a time frame for recovery from the knee injury he sustained in Saturday’s Premier League win over Brighton at Goodison Park.

“It is anticipated that the 28-year-old Icelandic international could be sidelined for several weeks but it will only be after consulting with the specialist that a definitive time frame will be known.”

Sigurdsson, who is valued at £27m by transfermarkt.co.uk, has scored six times and registered five assists in 33 appearances for Everton during the 2017-18 campaign.

The 28-year-old initially struggled to settle at Goodison Park following a big-money move from Swansea City in last summer’s transfer window, but his form has taken a turn for the better since Sam Allardyce arrived as head coach.
