Samson, Tilak smash records like it's nobody's business to hand India 3-1 series win

India blew the hosts out of the water to complete their fifth bilateral T20I series win in 2024

Firdose Moonda15-Nov-20244:49

India sign off on stellar T20I year in style

Bat like nobody’s business. That’s how Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma have approached this T20I series against South Africa. They scored a century each in Durban and Centurion respectively and then combined to hit a pair of hundreds in the finale in Johannesburg to rip up the record books and give India a fifth bilateral series win in 2024.India posted the highest T20I total in South Africa, never mind the venue, and their second-highest in T20Is (a month and three days after their highest, of 297 against Bangladesh). They became the first Full Member side and third international team to have two individual hundreds in the same innings, and the only team to boast four centuries in the same series.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

As for South Africa, perhaps the less said, the better. There was no repeat of the famous 438 moment when they went to the change room to the dry humour of one batter (Jacques Kallis) joking that the bowlers had done their job and the batters should follow suit. They were dismissed for 148 and slumped to their biggest defeat in the format by runs, losing by 135. South Africa have not won a bilateral T20I series in more than two years since beating Ireland in August 2022.Runs, runs, runsHow many different words are there to describe the way that India have batted in most of this series?! But it’s our job to try. We can come up with outrageous, expressive, unbelievable, or we could just let the numbers do the talking. India were 73 for 1 after the powerplay, 129 for 1 after 10 overs, 200 for 1 in the 15th over, and smashed 84 more runs in the last six overs. The 210-run second-wicket stand between Samson and Tilak was the highest for any wicket by India in men’s T20Is and they did not spare any part of the ground. Samson’s six-hitting was particularly impressive in the V, which accounted for four in his total of nine. The other four came on the on side but his wagon wheel was pretty even with 54 off-side runs to 55 leg-side.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Tilak Varma had a clear preference. He hit 74 runs on the leg side, including eight of his 10 sixes, and 46 on the off side. In the end, the direction would not have mattered to South Africa’s bowlers. Only Marco Jansen conceded at less than 11 runs an over and everyone else went at an economy rate of 14 or more. And a word for the pair’s celebrations. While Samson hardly raised a fist, he had the dugout all flexing their biceps, and Tilak pointed to his captain Suryakumar Yadav – who is likely to allow him to bat at No.3 for as long as he wants – and blew him an air-kiss.Concern over South Africa’s disciplinesIn between the over-reliance on the short ball, ineffective use of the slower one, and the odd full toss, South Africa also did themselves no favours by conceding 12 runs off wides and bowling a no-ball. That’s after they also conceded ten runs in wides and bowled three no-balls at SuperSport Park, where India only bowled one wide. At the Wanderers, India conceded six runs off wides, so there may have been some issue with bowlers finding their lines. South Africa’s biggest culprit was Gerald Coetzee, who conceded five wide runs, and left the field with a hamstring concern five overs into the match. He retuned to bowl the 15th over but was taken for 20 runs. It was not the most expensive over of the innings – Andile Simelane’s first over, which cost 24, was – but it was bruising nonetheless.Swing when you’re winningIt may have been the lights, or the gathering overhead cloud in preparation of an evening thunderstorm, but it was more likely India’s skill that found swing where South Africa could not. Arshdeep Singh almost immediately got away movement from the right-handed Reeza Hendricks and swerved one in the next ball to flick the off bail into a spin.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

He went on to beat Aiden Markram with more exquisite away-swing in a dangerous warning of what was to come. At the other end, Hardik Pandya moved the ball away from Ryan Rickelton once, twice, three and then four times before Rickelton could not resist. He reached for the fifth ball and got an edge to Samson to leave South Africa 1 for 2.South Africa finally find a six, but it’s far too littleIndia’s 23 sixes were the most in an innings in a T20I between two Full Member sides, which suggested conditions were suited for big hitting, but it took South Africa a touch over 50 balls to strike their first six. Ramandeep Singh bowled a half-tracker to Tristan Stubbs, and he dispatched it over deep midwicket. Two balls later, Stubbs moved across his stumps and hit Ramandeep over deep square. In the next over David Miller sent Varun Chakravarthy, the series’ highest wicket-taker, over cow corner before smashing two more sixes, but South Africa’s surge came too late. Varun shifted to around the wicket and made Miller fetch a ball from outside off and he found Tilak at long-on. Stubbs was dismissed lbw by Ravi Bishnoi off the next ball and all Marco Jansen’s 29-ball 12 could do was ensure South Africa finished with a bit more than half of India’s total.

West Brom could land Mason's very own Rondon by signing £4.3m star

Ryan Mason has undergone a lot of pre-seasons as a player.

However, the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder turned West Bromwich Albion boss is now close to completing his first summer in football as a rookie manager, with all the pre-season fixtures done and dusted ahead of Championship action kicking back off.

ryan-mason-tottenham-hotspur-eric-dier-lenglet-aston-villa-team-news

Mason will be hoping he’s the spark from the dug-out that guides the Baggies back up to the promised land of the Premier League, with West Brom deep into their fifth straight season as a second-tier outfit when matches get back underway.

The 33-year-old has been well-backed in the transfer window, with a whopping £4.7m solely splashed out on landing the clinical Aune Heggebo from Brann, as the lavish spending looks set to potentially continue in the centre-forward department.

West Brom could go back in for £4.3m star

The proof will soon be in the pudding as to whether that amount was too steep to fork out for Heggebo.

However, his numbers playing in his native Norway do not lie, with a mightily impressive 51 goals coming his way for Brann from 146 appearances. Subsequently, Mason is now spoiled for choice up top between his new, shiny 24-year-old and West Brom’s main marksman, Josh Maja.

He could have even more options to call into action if reports from Spain are to be believed, with a new update coming to light on West Brom’s previous centre-forward target, Chris Ramos.

Indeed, Diairo De Cadiz has stated that the Cadiz attacker is generating plenty of interest this summer in his services, but there is no rush to offload him just yet.

The La Liga 2 club is waiting for an offer in the £4.3m region to consider parting ways, having had a far lower £2.1m bid from the Championship side come their way in recent times.

The hope will be that the 6-foot-3 Spaniard can go on to be Mason’s very own Salomon Rondon, with the lofty striker often a physical brute when powering home goal after goal for Cadiz, much like the imposing Venezuelan was at the Hawthorns.

How Ramos can be Mason's own Rondon

Of course, when Rondon was leading the line as a formidable centre-forward, West Brom were seen as Premier League regulars, rather than second-tier promotion material.

While the now 35-year-old was never the most clinical or the most eye-catching – with a reasonable 28 strikes coming his way from 120 Baggies outings – nobody could speak ill about his commitment to the cause, as his final season at the Hawthorns saw him win a dominant 7.7 duels on average per Premier League clash.

Ramos has shown off a similar prowess in the air for Cadiz all across his ongoing stay at his hometown club, with this powerful effort above showing off the 28-year-old’s ability to head home under pressure in a similar vein to Rondon.

Staggeringly, Ramos wasn’t too far off Rondon’s duels won total either when plying his trade in La Liga during the 2023/24 campaign, as the Spanish forward averaged a mighty 7.1 successful duels per match, even as Gaizka Garitano’s side succumbed to relegation.

West Brom do need an option up top that can throw themselves about with conviction, especially with Daryl Dike now back in the treatment room, with Ramos also a reliable source of goals for Cadiz across his last two breakout seasons, as seen in his tally of 15 strikes in all competitions.

While Ramos might struggle initially to instantly break into the first-team ranks, possessing a striker with such strong physical attributes will be an effective weapon for Mason to have up his sleeve across the long EFL season to come.

If he does go on to be a success, the Cadiz number 16 could retrace Rondon’s footsteps even more by becoming a tough, no-nonsense attacker for the West Midlands outfit in the luxurious Premier League.

Fewer touches than Sanchez: 5/10 Chelsea star was even worse than Palmer

After a summer of waiting for the Premier League to return, that was not the performance Chelsea fans were hoping to see this afternoon.

Instead of playing the high-energy, exciting and effective football they did in pre-season, Enzo Maresca’s side looked lethargic and largely out of ideas against Crystal Palace.

Moreover, if it wasn’t for VAR stepping in and ruling out Eberechi Eze’s free-kick, the West Londoners could have started their campaign with a loss.

Unsurprisingly, there were lacklustre performances pretty much across the board for the hosts, but two really stood out to us, including Cole Palmer.

Palmer's performance against Palace

Following his brilliant performances at the Club World Cup and the time he has had since then to better understand his new teammates, we were expecting a great performance from Palmer today.

Performance in Numbers

Want data and stats? Football FanCast’s Performance in Numbers series provides you with the latest match analysis from across Europe.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get one, and instead, the Englishman looked unsure of what to do for the vast majority of the encounter.

Now, the former Manchester City prospect did not make any huge mistakes to cost his side the game, but he didn’t have any positive impact on proceedings either and, as he’s unquestionably the Blues’ best player, that is a massive problem.

We weren’t the only ones disappointed by his performance, either, as the Standard’s Dom Smith awarded him a rather generous 6/10 match rating at full-time.

We say generous, as on top of failing the eye-test today, the midfield maestro’s statistics make for some unpleasant reading.

For example, in his 96 underwhelming minutes, he amassed a combined expected goals and assists tally of just 0.24, played just one key pass, misplaced 100% of his crosses, didn’t take a single shot on target, failed in 100% of his dribbles and lost three of four ground duels.

In all, it was a bad first showing of the season from Palmer, although one of his teammates was even worse.

The Chelsea star worse than Palmer

Unfortunately for Maresca and Co, there were several starters who could take this spot, but for our money, Joao Pedro has it.

Like Palmer, the Brazilian forward came into the game off a sensational pre-season with the Blues, but looked an entirely different player against the Eagles.

In fact, the former Brighton & Hove Albion star was so disappointing that it was easy to forget he was even playing in the first place, which is not how you want your league debut for your new side described.

Chelsea forward Joao Pedro

It might sound harsh, but once again, we are not alone in this opinion as Smith gave the 23-year-old a 5/10 match rating, writing that he was ‘frustrated by centre-backs Marc Guehi and Chris Richards’.

Unsurprisingly, the Ribeirão Preto-born poacher’s statistics from the game more than demonstrate just how underwhelming a performance it was.

In 73 minutes of inaction, he registered a combined expected goals and assists figure of 0.32, had no shots on target, failed in 100% of his dribbles, took just 23 touches – 19 fewer than Robert Sanchez – lost six of nine duels, lost the ball seven times and completed just ten passes.

Ultimately, it was not a performance to remember from Pedro today, but thankfully, it’s just the first game, and if pre-season is anything to go by, he’ll eventually come good and potentially form a dangerous partnership with Palmer.

Healy trains strongly ahead of historic Test, Australia delay selection call

Australia’s captain completed running, fielding and batting just days after being in a moon boot

Alex Malcolm28-Jan-2025Australia captain Alyssa Healy is making a bold bid to play in the historic day-night Ashes Test at the MCG starting on Thursday after completing a full training session two days out despite battling a stress injury in her foot that saw her miss the entire T20I series while wearing a moon boot.Healy participated fully in Australia’s first main session at the MCG and looked impressive with no signs of pain or limitations with her right foot. She began with a running session with six other team-mates, including Ashleigh Gardner who is coming off a calf injury. The pair moved well with other team-mates doing multiple laps of the MCG in intervals at a very solid intensity.Related

Australia hope Healy can play as a batter in Ashes Test

Healy also did short sprints thereafter without issue and then took part in Australia’s fielding session. Healy will be in the outfield if she does play and had no trouble during the session which was completed at a good intensity. She then had a solid hit in the nets cycling through pace, spin and throw downs and had no trouble at any stage on her feet.Speaking prior to the training session, coach Shelley Nitschke said no decision had been made on whether Healy would play and that the team management would wait to see how Healy pulled up after testing her foot.”She’s going as well as can be expected,” Nitschke said. “I think you’ve all seen her out in a boot and taking some weight off of that foot.”She will have a test today, and we’ll just sort of see where that lands and have some discussions about that, whether or not we think she’s going to be okay for a four day test.”Nitschke said they would try and leave the decision as late as possible but they were wary of creating problems around role clarity given Healy’s significance as the captain and a senior batter.”We don’t have to actually lock it in until the toss,” Nitschke said. “But obviously there’s repercussions around that with who’s the captain and what our line-up looks like. So I think people sort of want to know their role coming in, so as soon as we can we will, but it certainly doesn’t have to be today.”The coach did admit there was some emotion involved in the decision. It is the first time women will play a Test match at the MCG since 1949 and the occasion will be historic as the two teams celebrate the 90-year anniversary of women’s Test cricket.Australia’s women have not played at the MCG since the 2020 T20 World Cup final where Healy was player of the match. There have been multiple WBBL games at the venue since but Healy has not played in any of those. She has played at the MCG just 12 times in her career.Australia do not play another Test until February-March of 2026 by which time Healy will be nearly 36. There is a possibility, given her recent injury struggles, that this could be the final opportunity she has to play Test cricket and to appear at the MCG although she has not given any hint as to when she may finish her international career.Alyssa Healy is pushing to play in the historic day-night Test at the MCG•Cricket Australia/Getty Images

“I think it’s just about keeping in mind what’s best for the team and making sure we’re putting the best team we can out there to perform,” Nitschke said. “So that’s always been front and foremost. But we don’t play a lot of Tests, so there’s sort of some emotion involved there, but we want to do what’s best for the team and see what happens.”Nitschke confirmed Gardner was fit and would play after overcoming her calf injury. She completed her running, batting and bowling without issue and looms as a key player after her player of the match performance in the third ODI and her player of the match performance in the last Ashes Test in England in 2023.Nitschke added the selectors were unsure of how they would structure the XI for the day-night Test. Spin has been a huge part of Australia’s six victories in the white-ball matches so far but the MCG has been one of the most seam-friendly pitches in long-form men’s cricket since the drop-ins were redone in 2019. The pitch was under cover throughout the evening on Tuesday and neither side were able to look at it.”We certainly look at what the pitch has played like in whether it’s Shield and the Test match, and then considering the pink ball as well and what that brings to the game,” Nitschke said. “So we certainly do look at the results and how the wicket has played in the men’s game, because there’s been no female longer format played here. And then obviously use, what’s happened in the white-ball series as well as some intel to how we’re matching up.”England were equally unsure how the surface would play but seamer Kate Cross looms as an option after completing two full bowling spells on Tuesday without appearing in too much discomfort having missed the ODI series with a back problem. Nat Sciver-Brunt was unsure whether Cross would be available for selection but she was positive about what she faced from her.”I don’t know,” she said. “You’ll have to ask the physios who will review with her as to whether she got through the net sessions, alright. And I’m sure tomorrow will have a good bearing on that as well. She’s tracking good. It’s nice to see her rocking out a few overs in the nets as well. I think she got through two spells today. It’s great to see her back to being herself.”Sciver-Brunt did not shy away from the fact that the tour had been extremely difficult for the team, stating that it might have been worse than their last trip down under in 2021-22 when they lost the Ashes 12-4 under Covid restrictions, only claiming points from the drawn Test and two washed out T20Is.But she said the incentive of performing well in a historic Test had the team excited to finish the tour on a bright note.”It is difficult,” Sciver-Brunt said. “But I think being a Test match at the end of that at this iconic venue, we love putting on the whites. We love the fact that we get to create new memories with our team-mates, with our close friends, and hopefully put a good showing of ourselves.”Grateful that we’ve got opportunity to do that after six games. But the last few days have been tough. But, we’ve regrouped, and we’ll do our best to stay up.”
