Everton needed to leave Elland Road with a point or with three, and with a positive performance to set the tone ahead of their first full season under David Moyes in his second stint as manager.
But Leeds United made it a winning return to the Premier League with a contentious late penalty from debutant Lukas Nmecha, leaving Moyes hot under the collar as his side built back from an abject opening 45 minutes.
For the second season running, the Toffees have started the campaign with Jarrad Branthwaite on the sidelines, and his brawn and bustle was certainly missed as the Whites sent their opponents packing 1-0.
Everton miss Branthwaite at Elland Road
Everton are considerably better when Branthwaite is in the starting line-up. The England international is powerful and commanding and a seamless partner alongside James Tarkowski, but a hamstring injury ruled him out and might keep him in the infirmary for several more weeks.
James Tarkowski and Jordan Pickford
Especially in the opening half, Everton were well and truly under the cosh, and Branthwaite would have made a big difference.
There were encouraging signs. Everton’s fluency will improve throughout the season, and they still produced a combative performance against Leeds, winning 51% of the match duels and winning 81% of their tackles, whereas Leeds only won 53% of theirs.
Keane put in a solid display, all in all, and has enough to deputise when called upon.
However, Jake O’Brien flattered to deceive, and though he’s dependable, the Republic of Ireland international showed exactly why they need to spend before the end of the month.
Jake O'Brien showed why Everton need to spend
Sean Dyche’s Everton signed O’Brien from Lyon for £17m last summer, but it was only under Moyes’ wing that he took flight, starting 17 of the 19 league fixtures after the Scotsman took charge.
Jake O'Brien and Jack Harrison in action
He did very well, and with Ashley Young having left at the end of his contract and Nathan Patterson injured once again, it looks like the right-back berth is his once again, unless The Friedkin Group complete a signing in the final few weeks of the transfer window.
A solid defender, the 24-year-old is tenacious and composed but struggles to add to the offensive charge, something that was underscored by his involvement against Leeds on Monday evening.

Everton have been linked with Manchester City’s Rico Lewis in recent days, clearly focused on adding a new dimension. It’s clearly needed after the display at Elland Road, even if The Liverpool Echo handed O’Brien a 6/10 match score, acknowledging that he kept Wilfried Gnonto rather quiet.
But he was the weak link in a backline that found itself breached through Tarkowski’s adjudged handball, proving to be even worse than Keane, who kept moving out into the middle of the park and threatening the balance of Moyes’ outfit.
Jake O'Brien in action for Everton
The thing is, O’Brien is a robust athlete and a stern defender, and he’s done a fantastic job since Moyes’ appointment in covering at right-back, but it would be an egregious error on TFG’s part not to sign an upgrade, someone who can naturally play on the right side of defence.
WhoScored recorded that Leeds registered more xG (2.28) than any other team in the Premier League across the opening matchweek.
If that’s not a stark illustration of the need for defenders, players such as a new right-back, then what is?

Everton still hope to make a few signings before the end of the summer transfer window.
ByAngus Sinclair Aug 18, 2025
O’Brien’s a good player, but at times Everton will need a different type of full-back to progress play and add lanes to the attacking flow. Leeds exposed that fact on their return to the big stage.
There may be some Glasgow Rangers supporters who are currently questioning the board, the recruitment department, and head coach Russell Martin.
You did not have to have super hearing to be aware of the feelings of some fans towards the manager during the 6-0 defeat to Club Brugge in Belgium on Wednesday night.
The Light Blues have conceded 17 goals in ten competitive matches under the new head coach, failing to qualify for the Champions League and failing to win any of their three games in the Scottish Premiership to date.
However, the recruitment department should also take some of the blame because it is, ultimately, the players on the pitch who are significantly underperforming at this moment in time.
Yes, Martin has to put a system and tactics in place that get the best out of the players, but there have been far too many simple mistakes that players signed by Rangers should not be making.
The recruitment team need to get the right calibre of players in the building, and that is why some may be frustrated to learn that Abdallah Sima currently looks set to leave Brighton for a relatively modest fee.
Rangers have missed a trick with Abdallah Sima
The Senegal international is reportedly on the verge of signing for Ligue 1 side Lens in a deal that is worth an initial fee of just £3.9m, plus add-ons on top of that.
Abdallah Sima
For context, Rangers paid £4.5m to sign Oscar Cortes from Lens as part of their obligation to make his loan permanent this summer. The Colombian winger has scored one league goal for Rangers since his arrival, initially on loan, in January 2024.
During Sima’s time on loan at Rangers from Brighton in the 2023/24 campaign, the left-sided attacker proved that he had the quality to make a big impact in Scottish football.
The £3.9m-rated star scored 16 goals in all competitions for the Ibrox giants, per Transfermarkt, and offered a big goal threat in the Premiership for Philippe Clement.

As you can see in the table above, Sima delivered 13 direct goal contributions in 17 starts in the top-flight for Rangers that season, before he returned to Brighton at the end of his loan spell.
The forward then scored 12 goals in all competitions for Brest on loan in France last season, which shows that he has continued to offer a threat in front of goal.
Abdallah Sima
This is why Rangers missing out on a £3.9m deal, particularly given what they paid for Cortes, could be seen as a blunder by the recruitment team and Martin.
However, the Gers are now reportedly looking at a move for a Premier League attacker who could be a Sima repeat at Ibrox in the 2025/26 campaign.
Rangers in talks to sign Premier League forward
According to RangersReview, Rangers have made contact with Everton over a potential deal to sign Portuguese centre-forward Youssef Chermiti.
The report claims that the Light Blues have enquired about a move to bring him to Ibrox on a season-long loan deal, with talks underway between the two clubs ahead of Monday’s deadline.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
Everton-based reporter El Bobble adds that the Gers are advancing in talks to complete a deal for the versatile forward, which suggests that progress has been made in recent hours.
The account, previously credited by David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano, claims that the Scottish giants are also looking to include an option to make the deal permanent.
It is now down to the club to ensure that they can wrap up a move for the 21-year-old star in the coming days before the window slams shut on Monday.
Why Chermiti could be the next Sima for Rangers
Supporters may take a look at Chermiti’s statistics and be concerned by the fact that he has not scored a goal in over two years with Everton, although he only played four times in the Premier League last season.
The young forward has failed to deliver a single goal or assist in 24 matches for Everton in all competitions, per Transfermarkt, which is not going to instill much hope from fans looking into his career.
However, Chermiti, dubbed an “outstanding” talent by U23 scout Antonio Mango, also came through the ranks and made first-team appearances at Sporting, a huge club, before being signed for a whopping fee of £15m by Everton in 2023.
Despite not scoring a competitive goal for Everton’s first-team, there is potential for Chermiti to arrive at Ibrox as a repeat of Sima, as another loanee from a Premier League club who could make a big impact at Ibrox.
Prior to his loan move to Glasgow, Sima had not played a single game for Brighton and had only scored five goals on loan at Angers, which shows that they were not signing a proven talent at the time.

As you can see in the table above, Chermiti has showcased his goalscoring potential at youth level for Portugal across various age groups in recent years, scoring 12 goals in 22 games since making the step up to U18 football.
He has not had a run of starts to show what he can do at first-team level, yet, and that is why a move to Rangers could make a lot of sense for all parties involved.
Chermiti will have the chance to play regular football and translate his goalscoring prowess at youth level over to the Premiership, and Rangers will have a talented young player who could develop during his time at Ibrox, much like Sima did.

The key difference between the two deals, though, could be that Rangers may have an option to make the deal permanent next summer, which will be significant if he has a positive impact on the pitch.

The tournament opener will pit KKR against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in an evening match. That will be followed by double-header Sunday (March 23) with SRH hosting Rajasthan Royals followed by the IPL’s most celebrated rivalry, with Chennai Super Kings hosting Mumbai Indians in a clash between two five-times champions.Royals, Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans will play three afternoon matches each, while the other seven teams will play two day matches each. Last year’s afternoon matches had started at 3.30 pm IST.ESPNcricinfo Ltd
There are 13 venues listed in the schedule: the primary home bases of each of the 10 teams along with with Guwahati (Royals’ second home venue), Visakhapatnam (Capitals’ second home venue) and Dharamsala (Punjab’s second home venue). While Guwahati and Vizag will host two matches each, three matches will be played in Dharamsala. While Punjab have usually played two games per season at the picturesque HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, the IPL has scheduled an extra game at the venue this season, with Capitals, Mumbai and LSG listed as Punjab’s opponents. These three matches will be played from May 4 to 11, which means Punjab are the only team to have a stretch of three back-to-back home matches. While several teams will be busy playing back-to-back matches with breaks of one or two days, no team will be on the road for three consecutive away matches. As has been the case in every season since the IPL expanded to ten teams in 2022, the teams have been split into two groups, with KKR, RCB, Royals, CSK and Punjab in one group and SRH, Capitals, Titans, Mumbai and LSG in the other. Teams will meet the other teams in their group and one team in the other group – determined by seeding – twice, and the other four teams in the opposite group once.CSK and Mumbai, for instance, will meet twice despite not being part of the same group. After their March 23 contest, these two teams will meet again on April 20, again on a Sunday evening, with Mumbai hosting Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium. Four teams – RCB, Mumbai, Punjab and LSG – will all play their opening match away, and only play their respective first home matches in April. RCB, who scripted a miraculous return to form to make the playoffs last year with six consecutive wins after winning just one of their first eight matches, will end their league season with a sustained spell of home games: four of their last six matches will be at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.View the full IPL 2025 schedule here

If we just ignore the minor injury crisis, this looks set to be an incredibly exciting campaign for Chelsea.
Granted, Enzo Maresca’s side did drop points in their Premier League season opener, but back-to-back wins against London competition have proven that they’re a better team than last year.
That shouldn’t be much of a surprise, though, as the Blues made a host of brilliant signings over the summer, including Joao Pedro, who already looks more than settled.
That said, Todd Boehly and Co will hope he keeps up the good form as they’ve already made a significant loss on someone who’s been compared to him.
Joao Pedro's start to life at Chelsea
Chelsea were quick to sign Pedro this summer, paying Brighton & Hove Albion around £60m and bringing him in before the end of the Club World Cup campaign.
It was a good thing they did, as the Brazilian made an instant impact, scoring three goals in three appearances in the competition, including one in the final against Champions League champions Paris Saint-Germain.
His brilliant form continued into pre-season with a couple of goals against Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan, before his first blank in the season opener against Crystal Palace.
Chelsea forward Joao Pedro
However, you can’t keep such an incredible player down for too long, and away to West Ham United, the former Watford ace got back up and running with a headed goal, and then he grabbed another goal at home to Fulham on Saturday.
In all, it’s hard to think of another signing in the Premier League this season who has got off to as good a start as the prolific forward has.
It’s not just the goals either, as the 23-year-old dynamo has also provided two assists in the league so far, and his overall play makes him stand out wherever he is on the pitch.
Interestingly, Chelsea signed a player who has been compared to Pedro, but instead of him becoming a success in West London, he was just sold for a sizable loss.
Chelsea's former Pedro
Given the number of players Chelsea have signed over the years, it’s no surprise that they’ve had more than their fair share of duds.
Where Are They Now
Yet, unlike many teams, the Blues are remarkably good at either minimising their losses on these players or even making a small profit on them.
Unfortunately, that did not happen with Christopher Nkunku.
The French international joined the Blues under former boss Mauricio Pochettino in the summer of 2023 for a fee of around £52m, and after two disappointing years in West London, was sold for up to £36m to AC Milan this summer.
While that isn’t too bad a fee to get for the player, it does represent a £16m loss, which is quite sizable for a player who has been compared to Pedro.
Yes, the former RB Leipzig gem, who could only muster a tally of 18 goals and five assists in 62 appearances for the Blues, has been likened to Maresca’s new star.
The comparison stems from FBref, which has concluded that the new Milan man was the sixth most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the former Brighton ace in the Premier League last season.
We can see how such a conclusion was reached by delving into some of the underlying numbers in which the pair ranked so closely.
These include metrics such as non-penalty goals plus assists, key passes, shot and goal-creating actions and more, all per 90.

These numbers do suggest that the underwhelming Frenchman is still a talented attacker, but just someone who could not get to grips with life in the Premier League and turn good underlying numbers into concrete results.
Away from the stats, the other similarity between the two players is their ability to start in various positions, from up top to out wide and even in attacking midfield.

Mushfiqur Rahim, Bangladesh’s most experienced ODI player, has announced his retirement from the format. Mushfiqur made the announcement on his Facebook page, a week after Bangladesh returned home from a disappointing Champions Trophy campaign where they failed to win a game.Mushfiqur finishes as Bangladesh’s second-highest ODI run-getter with 7795 runs at an average of 36.42, with nine hundreds and 49 fifties from 274 matches. He is one of only five wicketkeepers to play more than 250 ODIs, and his seven centuries are the fourth-most by a keeper, behind only Kumar Sangakkara, Adam Gilchrist and MS Dhoni.Mushfiqur’s form had been in the spotlight in recent times, though, and he came under more scrutiny during the Champions Trophy. Mushfiqur was out for a golden duck against India, and scored just 2 against New Zealand. His last ODI fifty was against Sri Lanka in March last year – he was injured for two ODIs against Afghanistan in November, and the West Indies tour in November and December.”I am announcing my retirement from the ODI format as of today,” Mushfiqur wrote on his official Facebook page. ” for everything. While our achievements may have been limited on a global level, one thing is certain: whenever I stepped onto the field for my country, I gave more than 100% with dedication and honesty. The last few weeks have been very challenging for me, and I have come to realize that this is my destiny.”Lastly, I would like to deeply thank my family, friends and my fans for whom I have played cricket for the last 19 years.”Widely hailed as a giant in Bangladesh’s ODI history, Mushfiqur first made a mark in the 2007 World Cup, when he was picked ahead of the veteran Khaled Mashud. He immediately repaid the selectors’ faith, scoring a fifty in the famous victory against India in Trinidad. Mushfiqur quickly became a middle-order mainstay, and barring a brief spell in 2008 when he lost his place, he was a constant presence in Bangladesh sides for almost two decades.Mushfiqur also holds the Bangladesh record for most consecutive ODIs, having played 92 matches between 2010 and 2016.He retired from T20Is following the 2022 T20 World Cup. He is currently on 94 Tests, in line to become the first Bangladeshi to reach the 100-Test landmark.
