While there were some early jitters against the likes of Brentford and Leeds United, Nuno Espírito Santo has been able to somewhat steady the ship at West Ham United.

Now, things are far from perfect, but the Hammers have gone from losing every week to losing just one of their last six games and sit just two points off Nottingham Forest in 17th and the Peacocks in 16th.

However, there are still some potential problems on the horizon, like the uncertain future of Lucas Paqueta.

Fortunately, West Ham already have the perfect replacement for the Brazilian if he does end up leaving.

Why Paqueta will need to be replaced

Now, the first thing to say is that at his best, Paqueta is an incredible footballer and someone who could play for some of the very best teams in the world.

However, there are two major problems for West Ham: his contract and his recent output.

Starting with the first one, as things stand, the Brazilian’s current deal will have just a year left at the end of the season, meaning he either needs to be sold or handed an extension to protect his value.

However, given reports that he is open to leaving next month and his admission that he almost pushed for a return to Flamengo in the summer, it certainly seems he would turn down another deal.

In other words, the East Londoners should not only be open to selling the 28-year-old, but also be pushing for it.

This would also perhaps be more palatable at this point compared to a couple of years ago, as, on top of being sent off against Liverpool, his output has been underwhelming for some time now.

For example, he has scored only four goals this season, three of which have come in the Premier League, and last season he ended the campaign with a paltry tally of five goals in 36 games.

In all, while Paqueta is an undeniably talented footballer, the combination of his contract and form might mean it’s time for West Ham to start thinking about selling him, especially as Nuno already has the perfect replacement.

West Ham made several exciting signings in the summer, from El Hadji Malick Diouf to Soungoutou Magassa, but the one who could have the highest ceiling is Mateus Fernandes.

The East Londoners spent around £40m to get him out of Southampton, and while he looked a little rusty to start with, he’s now looking every bit worth that fee and then some.

Moreover, he’s the player who could end up being Nuno’s ideal Paqueta replacement, and the first reason why is his attacking ability.

Like the Brazilian, the 21-year-old is more than capable of being the most attacking midfielder, and is blessed with incredible vision and an excellent range of passing.

In fact, respected analyst Ben Mattinson was bold enough to describe the midfielder as someone who is capable of playing “those KDB-type passes” with relative ease.

However, he can do more than that, though, as on top of also having the ability to get past opposition defenders, the Olhão-born maestro isn’t afraid to chip in with the dirty work.

This ability to seemingly do it all, and to a high standard, was on show in the draw against Brighton.

For example, in 82 minutes of action, he played one key pass, took 61 touches, won five fouls, completed 100% of his dribbles, won 16 of 17 ground duels, made four interceptions, three clearances and five of eight tackles.

Ultimately, it might take him a little longer to fully get up to speed, but as things stand, Fernandes is looking like an excellent signing for West Ham and could just be the perfect Paqueta replacement.

– Desde o início, falando com o Lúcio e com a 777, eles queriam um diretor que ajudasse a construir saídas para o projeto de futebol. O que significa isso na prática? É desenvolver uma linha orientadora para a formação do elenco, contribuir no desenvolvimento do perfil do jogador que o Vasco vai formar, qual vai ser a estratégia que o Vasco vai adotar no mercado. Quando a gente fala de diretor de futebol, é isso. É uma visão muito mais ampla para ajudar na construção de um norte para o projeto de futebol do clube, não só pensando na janela, mas no futuro do Vasco. Um dos pontos que foi passado é que o Vasco pensou muito no imediato e deixou de pensar no seu futuro. Com relação a isso, acho que a gente estava bem alinhado. A minha felicidade é que o Pedrinho pensa da mesma maneira, a gente está 100% alinhado. Que não seja só vender o almoço para pagar a janta. Temos que começar a pensar num futuro para colocar o Vasco de novo entre os protagonistas.

– Para fazer isso, não é só dinheiro. Se não tiver uma lógica bem estabelecida, você pode ter um caminhão de dinheiro que vai gastar errado. A torcida normalmente está interessada num grande nome. Mas se a gente começar a tomar uma decisão popular sem respeitar a sustentabilidade financeira do clube, o clube quebra. Eu não estou aqui para dar notícia boa, estou para dar a notícia que é possível. Não estou aqui para vender sonho, estou aqui para ajudar a construir o sonho. Alguém precisa plantar, estou aqui para isso.

– Falando em transferências, parte desse diagnóstico do que era o Vasco foi na análise financeira, para sabermos o que fazer na janela. Uma das grandes compreensões que temos é que o Vasco tem um orçamento limitado, o clube não está com cofres cheios. Isso leva diretamente ao fato de o Coutinho querer estar aqui. A briga do Coutinho não é financeira, não vamos ao mercado para oferecer mais dinheiro pelo Coutinho. Estamos fazendo uma conversa com alguém que quer estar no Vasco, que optou por isso. A opção dele não está atrelada de investimento, mas, sim à capacidade de entendimento do que é o projeto do Vasco hoje e a importância que ele tem nesse cenário. É por aí que as conversas caminham.

– Até o momento o clube não recebeu nenhuma proposta de saída de jogadores, até porque tem uma distância para a janela. Quando acontecer, vamos avaliar caso a caso, sentar com os jogadores, com o Álvaro e entender se essa saída pode fazer sentido, se pode fazer bem para o jogador. Isso vai ser uma construção com toda equipe técnica e com os próprios jogadores.

RELAÇÃO COM PEDRINHO
– Desde a decisão judicial, o Pedrinho foi muito cuidadoso para fazer algumas ligações importantes. Ele fez uma ligação com o Lúcio para alinhar os detalhes e construir essa entrada dele no aspecto operacional. E ele me liga para uma conversa no mesmo nível, para entender o planejamento, o que a gente estava pensando, quais os movimentos. Ele está muito preocupado com o ambiente no CT, como o CT está sendo impactado com isso. E todas as conversas foram muito positivas, está todo mundo pensando no bem do Vasco. Eu tenho visto com muito otimismo a entrada dele. Não foi uma entrada abrupta, muito pelo contrário. Foi muito suave, tranquila e pacífica.

– Todas as conversas não foram de mudança de planejamento, mas de continuidade e de fortalecimento de tudo que está sendo feito. Hoje teve conversa com os atletas. Desde então a gente tem trocado muita ideia, eu tenho visto muita sinergia tanto no pensamento dele, no pensamento do Lúcio… Se dá para resumir em uma frase, acho que a gente está muito unido e trabalhando em prol do Vasco.

Former India seamer Venkatesh Prasad has vowed to bring top-flight cricket back to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium if elected as president in the upcoming Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) elections slated for November 30.Prasad has teamed up with Sujith Somasunder, the former India and Karnataka opener, with the duo receiving a strong endorsement from two India stalwarts, Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath. Vinay Mrutyunjaya, another former KSCA officer bearer, will contest for the secretary’s post.Both Prasad and Somasunder were earlier part of the KSCA administration when Kumble and Srinath had served as president and secretary. Prasad served as vice-president while Somasunder, who is currently head of education at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE), was part of the managing committee.Two other women cricketers are part of Prasad’s camp – former India Women captain Shantha Rangaswamy and V Kalpana. While Rangaswamy is ineligible to contest elections due to the age criteria, Kalpana is likely to be part of the committee in some capacity.Prasad will be contesting against KN Shanth Kumar, who has the backing of Brijesh Patel, the former India batter and veteran KSCA administrator. “Karnataka cricket has been suffering and Venky is here to make a difference,” Kumble told reporters on Tuesday. “All the work we had put in during our three-year tenure [2010-2013] has been undone over the past many years. The most common question we get asked is ‘when are you returning?'”Two key stakeholders have been neglected: cricketers and fans. Last week we won the Women’s World Cup, and it was a landmark occasion. But we [Karnataka] didn’t have a single representation. That needs to change.”Kumble also touched upon the horrific stampede that claimed 11 lives outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s victory parade after winning IPL 2025. Describing June 4 as a “black mark, black day”, Kumble urged Prasad & co to ensure they do everything they can to “bring glory back to Karnataka” and the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which he likened to a “temple.”Prasad, meanwhile, underlined his panel’s readiness to hold constructive dialogue with the Karnataka government and other key stakeholders to bring back cricket to the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Only club games have been played at the venue, which recently lost out on the Women’s World Cup – including the final – due to the stand-off between there KSCA and the state government over the stampede row.The KSCA has also been in a tussle with the state government over power issues. Until earlier this month, BESCOM – the state’s electricity department – had cut off power to the entire facility due to non-compliance with fire safety norms. Recently, the KSCA submitted an undertaking of compliance, since which power has been restored.”We believe in having a proper dialogue with the government, and adhere to whatever the safety audit report has told us,” Prasad said. Somasundar added: “The stadium renovation work needs to be done in a phased manner, and is something we will take up on priority. We may not be able to increase the capacity, but we should certainly comply with safety norms and ensure cricket returns to one of India’s storied venues.”Another key area of focus, Prasad said, was the development of a full-fledged women’s academy at the same premises where the National Cricket Academy, now BCCI’s CoE, operated.

Na ocasião, o atleta defendia o Novorizontino. Porém, Rômulo estava negociado e até oficialmente anunciado pelo Palmeiras. Ele revelou que essa situação foi difícil de lidar.

– Foi um momento um pouco difícil, defender o Novorizontino e estar comprado pelo Palmeiras. Eu estava vestindo a camisa do Novorizontino e tinha que defender eles. Aconteceu o que tinha que acontecer e acho que fiz meu trabalho bem feito e fui profissional com o Novorizontino e Palmeiras. O meia também compartilhou uma história de superação. Rômulo teve cerca de 30 recusas ao tentar testes em clubes de futebol e, inclusive, recebeu um “não” do próprio Palmeiras.

– Esse processo foi bastante árduo por tudo que passei, pelos “nãos” que levei. Não sei ao certo, mas acho que quase 30 recusas. Mas minha família ajudou bastante, continuamos firmes. Já tinha feito avaliação no Palmeiras e talvez não era o momento. Mas continuei trabalhando e hoje chego no Palmeiras para fazer um grande trabalho – disse.

Rômulo ainda não estreou pelo Palmeiras, mas está à disposição de Abel para jogar na quinta-feira (11). A equipe enfrenta o Liverpool, do Uruguai, pela segunda rodada da fase de grupos da Libertadores.

Aos 22 anos, o meia somou 13 partidas, três gols e duas assistência pelo Novorizontino no Paulistão. Ele foi um dos destaques do torneio e apareceu na seleção oficial da competição.

After months of misery and poor performances, there are now reasons for West Ham United to feel somewhat hopeful.

Yes, it’s still going to be a tough season for the East Londoners, but Nuno Espírito Santo got it spot on against Newcastle United and secured his first win with the club.

Moreover, several standout performers demonstrated they are ready for the fight, such as Freddie Potts.

The academy graduate was incredible and has to be a regular starter from this point onwards, even if that means it’s the end of the line for another West Ham ace.

The West Ham duds who need to be sold

While the win over Newcastle has certainly helped morale around the club, there remain more than a few players West Ham need to shift as soon as possible.

Fortunately, it appears that at least one of them is set to leave, with reports emerging that Niclas Füllkrug has his heart set on returning to Germany in January.

The former Borussia Dortmund striker has been a complete flop in East London, having scored just three goals and provided two assists in 27 appearances.

Someone who at least had a reasonably decent first season with the club, but needs to be sold nonetheless, is James Ward-Prowse.

The former Southampton captain was a constant problem in the middle of the park while Graham Potter was in the dugout, as he lacked the physicality and pace for the defensive side of the game and became increasingly ineffective going forward.

Moreover, with Nuno now freezing him out of the squad, selling him in January would be best for his own career.

Finally, although it may seem a bit early, it is likely in the club’s best interest to sell Mads Hermanssen before his value declines further.

The Danish shot-stopper might have looked good at Leicester City, but was woeful at the start of the season and miles off the level Alphons Areola is at today.

With all that said, there is one more player who might have been able to stay at West Ham were it not for Potts’ impressive display against Newcastle.

While there were excellent performances across the pitch on Saturday, it would be fair to say Potts was one of the best players for West Ham.

The academy gem played with his heart on his sleeve, adding some real dynamism and power to the midfield, but at the same time, showed some real technical quality.

It was the sort of display that should see him start every game for the foreseeable future.

However, if he is to do that, and the likes of Mateus Fernandes and Lucas Paqueta are to play a major role this year, while Soungoutou Magassa is on the bench, the club need to trim their midfield options.

This, unfortunatly for him, leads to Andy Irving.

Unlike his teammates, the once-capped Scotsman doesn’t really bring any standout qualities to the team.He is not an overly technical player, and as fans have seen over the last few weeks, he is not nearly physical enough for the Premier League.

In fact, he started in the loss to Brentford last month, and in the aftermath, Jamie Carragher described the Hammers as “one of the slowest teams I’ve seen in Premier League history!”

Then, against Leeds when he was once again tasked with running the midfield, journalist Jordan Rushworth described him as a “National League standard” midfielder, adding that he “gets walked past every time an opposition midfielder has the ball.”

Ultimately, while that might be a step too far, it has become increasingly clear that Irving is not at the level to play for West Ham.

Therefore, with Potts now unignorable, the club should look to sell the Scotsman as soon as possible.
