Everton are now preparing a club-record bid for Napoli star Scott McTominay, amid doubts over the future of a first-team star.

The Toffees’ interest in signing a new midfielder perhaps also stems from the fact Idrissa Gueye is now in the twilight years of his career at 36-years-old, with the 120-time Senegal international’s contract set to expire in the summer, although there is an option to extend it by an extra year.

Based on recent performances, it may be worth triggering the extension, with the central midfielder scoring the opening goal in the 2-0 victory against Fulham last time out, while also winning three duels and making three clearances.

Not only is Gueye’s future up in the air, but there is also doubt over whether James Garner will remain at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with both Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest making contact over a deal for the 24-year-old, who has impressed at times this season.

According to a report from Spain, McTominay could be a game-changing signing for Everton in midfield, should Garner leave or lose his place in the starting XI, and the Merseyside club are now preparing a club-record bid in the region of €70m (£62m).

David Moyes is an admirer of the Napoli star, who could be the manager’s new Marouane Fellaini, given his physicality and ability to arrive into the opposition penalty box from deeper areas, and the former Manchester United man may be tempted by an enticing offer to return to the Premier League.

With the Toffees looking to bring in an experienced, versatile midfielder, the Scotland international fits the bill, and there are signs he could be a fantastic addition to Moyes’ squad, having been lauded as “sensational” by broadcaster David Tanner in the past.

Not only that, but the 28-year-old is also vastly experienced in the Premier League, having made 255 appearances for Man United, and he has since really kicked on since moving to the Serie A, chipping in with 12 goals and six assists during Napoli’s title-winning 2024-25 campaign.

Everton should look to secure the futures of Gueye and Garner regardless, but McTominay could be a real statement signing, as they look to start competing for the European places again, rather than looking over their shoulders at the wrong end of the Premier League table.

وقال ميندييتا، خلال حوار أجراه مع صحيفة “آس” الإسبانية: “قد يبدو الأمر غريبًا بعض الشيء، لكن ريال مدريد لا يزال في مرحلة انتقالية مع تشابي ألونسو، ومع ذلك، نتفهم ونعلم أن هذا الانتقال غير موجود في ريال مدريد، لكنها مرحلة نشهد فيها انهيارًا في الفريق حتى كان ذلك مع كارلو أنشيلوتي”.

وأضاف: “سنرى مهاجمين ولاعبي وسط، ربما مع جود بيلينجهام أو إبراهيم دياز أو أي لاعب آخر في هذا المركز، ستكون هناك دائمًا فترات صعود وهبوط ولن يكون الفريق متماسكًا طوال التسعين دقيقة”.

وتابع: “شخصيًا، لا أعتقد أننا سنرى الفريق الذي يريده تشابي ألونسو، لم نرَه في ريال مدريد مع أي مدرب، ما أعنيه هو بناءً على ما رأيناه في ليفركوزن، هو أنه يريد فريقًا متماسكًا يضغط عاليًا ويدافع بتماسك”.

وأوضح: “لم نشاهد شيئًا كهذا في ريال مدريد من قبل، لذلك لا أعتقد أننا سنراه قريبًا، هذا سيتركنا مع فينيسيوس جونيور، كيليان مبابي، ورودريجو إذا لعب هناك، أو إذا كان بيلينجهام”.

واسترسل: “سيتعرض الفريق دائمًا للانهيار في مرحلة ما من المباريات، لكن بفضل جودتهم وكفاءتهم، يتمكنون من الفوز بها، سيواصلون على نفس النحو حتى تتغير الأمور في المستقبل”.

وأتم عن تجديد عقد فينيسيوس: “كنت أقرأ وأرى أن فينيسيوس غير سعيد وأنه لا توجد مفاوضات أخرى لتجديد عقده، بالطبع هكذا تكون عملية التفاوض لكن يبدو واضحًا أن الأمور لا تسير بسلاسة رغم أن النتائج قادمة وهم أيضًا في صدارة ترتيب الدوري الإسباني”.

However, if there is one weakness in the side, it’s probably at centre-back, as without Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana, the options at Enzo Maresca’s disposal aren’t all that inspiring.

Fortunately, Chelsea have been linked with an impressive defender who has been compared to William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães.

In fact, the report goes further, revealing that the West Londoners are planning to hijack Crystal Palace’s move for the Ivorian international.

However, to do that, the Pensioners would have to match or even exceed the Eagles’ supposed bid of around £44m.

It could therefore be a complicated and somewhat costly transfer to get over the line, but given Diomande’s ability, potential, and the fact he’s been compared to Saliba and Gabriel, it’s one Chelsea should pursue.

How Diomande compares to Saliba and Gabriel

Now, while Chelsea fans might not want to admit it, and understandably so, Saliba and Gabriel have been the best centre-back pairing in the Premier League for at least a season now.

Therefore, it’s a huge claim to suggest another defender is like a combination of the two, a claim respected analyst Ben Mattinson made when he described Diomande as “a hybrid between Gabriel and Saliba” just last year.

Now, when it comes to the Brazilian, the similarities are rather difficult to miss, as while he’s just an inch shorter, the Ivorian international is still a titan of a player at 6 foot 3.

This stature allows the 21-year-old “monster,” in the words of Mattinson, to overpower opposition attackers and put in challenges that a more slight centre-back would find difficult.

How about the Frenchman, then? What makes the Abidjan-born star similar to him?

Well, despite his impressive physicality, the former Midtjylland gem is no slouch on the ball and has a passing range most defenders could only dream of.

Moreover, according to FBref, the Arsenal star was statistically the most similar centre-back to the Sporting man across last season’s Champions League.

According to TEAMtalk, Scott McTominay’s remarkable renaissance in Serie A has triggered a transfer scramble among Premier League heavyweights, with Arsenal one of the latest clubs to hold discussions with the midfielder’s representatives ahead of a potential summer move.

The 28-year-old has been sensational since joining Napoli from Manchester United in a £26 million deal last year, notching four goals and an assist already this season, and his transformation from a United squad player to Serie A superstar has been nothing short of extraordinary.

McTominay won the Serie A MVP award for the 2024/25 season and earned a Ballon d’Or nomination, helping Napoli to secure their fourth Scudetto, establishing himself as a club icon in just one remarkable campaign.

More recently, his stunning overhead kick against Denmark, arguably one of the best Scotland goals ever scored, sent Steve Clarke’s side on their way to an historic 4-2 win over the Danes which confirmed their place at next year’s World Cup.

Last season, he made 34 Serie A appearances, scoring 12 goals and providing four assists, obliterating expectations for a player who was considered surplus to requirements in Manchester. José Mourinho has even called McTominay “one of the best midfielders” in Europe.

Antonio Conte views the Scotsman as his midfield ‘linchpin’, and TT report that Arsenal have sounded out McTominay’s camp alongside the likes of Tottenham, Everton and even his former club. However, any potential suitors face a significant hurdle.

Napoli have set a gargantuan price tag, with any bid below £71 million set to be dismissed out of hand.

While McTominay will require a hefty investment on Berta’s part, it is clear to see why Arsenal have taken an interest, with the in-form star’s future poised to be at the centre of debate over this next year.

وأردف أرتيتا: “بطريقة لعبنا، عندما يتفوق لاعب على خصمه، تكون المساحة مفتوحة، أتيحت لنا بعض الفرص، لكنهم فريق جيد، كنا قريبين من التسجيل في بعض الأحيان، علينا أن نرفع من معنوياتنا ونواصل التقدم”.

وأشار: “سيكون كل أسبوع على هذا المنوال، لم نخسر في 18 مباراة، وفارق النقاط ضئيل للغاية، علينا أن نركز على أنفسنا وعلى معايير معينة، اليوم لم تكن المستويات الفردية موجودة في بعض الحالات، علينا أن نواصل التقدم”.

وأتم: “كان مستوى الثبات في الأداء مع كل ما حدث لنا مذهلاً، لا أجد أي مانع من التفكير بخلاف ذلك”.
