Leeds’ Alioski struggles against Reading

Leeds got their second win in a row against Reading on Saturday.

The Whites had won just one of their last seven before their last three fixtures, but they are now unbeaten in that trio of clashes, and they have won the last two. As it stands, they are currently five points clear of Fulham, who are in third position in the table – they may finally be on their way to that promotion they so clearly crave.

Against the Royals, they were the better side. They had 66% possession of the ball, whilst they managed 18 shots to eight. In the end, only Pablo Hernandez’s strike separated the two sides, but it was all Marcelo Bielsa needed for his team to grab the three points.

El Loco, though, was handed a big blow as Kalvin Phillips was forced off towards the end of the first half. In his place, Ezgjan Alioski was introduced to the play – but unfortunately, he failed to match the required standard.

The North Macedonia international was not at his best. He won just four out of the 11 duels he contested, whilst he missed one huge opportunity. He did make one key pass, but he also gave away two fouls as well. With a pass accuracy of just 73%, he will have been disappointed with his performance.

Phillips’ injury could be a huge blow to Bielsa. Not only because he is one of his best players – there is a reason why a number of Premier League clubs are interested in signing him – but because of what it will mean to the rest of the team. As the manager explained, Phillips’ departure meant Alioski went to left-back, Stuart Dallas moved to right-back, Luke Ayling slotted in at centre-back and Ben White took up the vacant defensive midfielder role. £4.05m-valued Alioski – as per Transfermarkt – needing to play regularly on the left could become an issue.

Leeds have struggled in recent weeks but the draw against Brentford and the victory against Bristol City indicated they may have turned a corner. Whilst they may have prevailed here, it was against a side that is 16th in the table.

As they now enter the business end of the season, the Yorkshire outfit may be without one of their star players, and if Bielsa does not have an adequate replacement for him to come in, their results may once again take a turn for the worse.

The Argentine will be crossing his fingers that Phillip’s injury is not too serious.

Meanwhile, Leeds fans react to this man’s omission.

Laurie Whitwell slams Victor Lindelof

The Athletic’s Manchester United correspondent Laurie Whitwell has provided a damning assessment on Victor Lindelof following the Red Devils’ 1-1 draw against Everton.

The Sweden international was drafted back into the starting XI by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after Eric Bailly had started the last two games – both of which were wins against Chelsea and Club Brugge.

The former Benfica centre-back didn’t do anything drastically wrong, with the only goal conceded by United coming after David de Gea kicked the ball at the onrushing Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

However, Whitwell wasn’t left convinced by Lindelof’s display.

What did he say?

After a fan said: “Lindelof was very poor again today. He is the weakest CB we have at the club. Always shoved off the ball and weak under a high ball too”, Whitwell responded in his post-match Q&A session.

The journalist wrote: “Can’t fault that assessment David. Lindelof just makes me nervous when running the channels one on one. Thought he would get a second booking when up against Calvert-Lewin late on but it was too soft in the end.”

Not a great day for Lindelof

While, as aforesaid, the Swede didn’t do anything completely calamitous, he still didn’t have the best day out on Merseyside.

The 25-year-old had two unsuccessful touches and also received a yellow card from Chris Kavanagh.

Lindelof was also put to shame by Harry Maguire in the clearances department, as the Englishman registered 15 compared to his meagre tally of just two.

United’s No.2 also committed two fouls and didn’t make a block against Carlo Ancelotti’s men.

He also saw none of his five attempted long balls find a teammate, while also failing to get involved from an attacking sense with no dribbles forward and no key passes to his name.

From non-League to the Premier League: Where did these top-flight stars begin their careers?

After Bailly had contributed to back-to-back clean sheets against Chelsea and Club Brugge, Lindelof had to step up and justify his manager’s decision to make such a call – however, he didn’t do much to set Goodison Park alight, hence Whitwell’s damning comments on him.

Leeds’ Stuart Dallas the big unsung hero for Marcelo Bielsa

So Leeds’ march to the Premier League is gathering some real momentum now.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side headed into the clash against Huddersfield on Saturday on the back of four successive victories in the Championship, and all without conceding a single goal.

And after a goal straight out of the top drawer from Luke Ayling in the third minute of the game, the Whites looked as comfortable as ever, eventually sealing a 2-0 win thanks to a strike from Patrick Bamford.

But whilst Ayling may be the man grabbing all the post-match headlines for his wonder strike, Stuart Dallas was arguably the unsung hero against the Terriers.

The 28-year-old has been one of Bielsa’s more reliable performers this season, featuring in 38 games across all competitions, and playing a whole variety of positions. On Saturday, he was once again at left-back, and he put on a real defensive masterclass.

As per Sofascore, out of the 18 total duels that he contested, he won an impressive 11 of them – by far and away the most of any Leeds player on the pitch. And whilst he showed his strength in the 50/50s, he also showed he could put his foot in too.

He made three tackles (another team-high), three interceptions, one clearance and blocked one shot too. By whilst he also looked imperious from a defensive point of view, Dallas also contributed going forward. He provided one key pass, and had 79 touches of the ball, with only Ayling and Pablo Hernandez enjoying more.

As Leeds look to make their return to the riches of the Premier League, they are going to need players like Dallas to keep consistently producing. Goal-scorers are naturally going to take most of the limelight, but the real unsung heroes are the ones who put in impressive performances whilst going under the radar.

And Dallas was exactly that on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Leeds fans rave about this ace’s display.

Spurs fans react to Geoffrey Kondogbia transfer report

Football may currently be on lockdown across the globe, but that isn’t stopping Tottenham Hotspur from planning for next season, that’s if latest reports are to be believed.

Jose Mourinho’s side are staring down the barrel of their season being over, irrespective of what happens with the ongoing situation off the field, as they have been knocked out of all cup competitions and sit some seven points from the top four in the Premier League.

This week, the north London outfit have been linked to Valencia defensive midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia by Sky Sports, who claim the Portuguese chief is looking to bolster his struggling squad this summer.

The 27-year-old is admired by Spurs chief scout Steve Hitchen for a long-time as he has reportedly kept tabs on him throughout the current campaign.

Supporters have been reacting to the news on social media, here’s what has been said…

A couple of fans directed criticism at Hitchen given his recent transfer record. The likes of Ryan Sessegnon, Jack Clarke and Tanguy Ndombele have failed to impress in north London in the mind of one member of the Spurs faithful, for instance.

Another joked with an image of blind singer Stevie Wonder.

Others would love to see the Frenchman at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season, claiming he’s an “absolute class” midfielder while one supporter asked the club to sell Eric Dier and bring in Kondogbia instead.

Per WhoScored, the 27-year-old is averaging 2.4 tackles, 2.2 interceptions and 3.4 long balls per game in La Liga this term, which outweighs the Englishman in every facet.

Although, others had their reservations about the move with one comparing his fitness to Ndombele and another claimed his performances for former club Inter Milan were enough to put him off from wanting him at Spurs.

Forshaw could end up playing again this season

It’s very hard to find something to be happy about as a football fan in the current climate.

For many of us, our lives heavily revolved around the beautiful game, and for Leeds fans it’s a double whammy as they’ve been forced to wait for the conclusion of what was setting up to be one of the most memorable campaigns in the club’s recent history.

During such a testing time it’s vital to seek out the silver linings to keep spirits up, and fortunately for United fans there is one positive that could come out of this delay.

The EFL have made it clear that they want the season to be played to a finish, and if that’s the plan, they may have to wait a while as the peak of the current pandemic is predicted to be 10-14 weeks away.

That would take us into the summer, and with nine matches still to go, the season could easily run into August or even September depending on how congested the powers that be make the fixture list.

While having to wait such a long time for the conclusion of the season sounds like a nightmare, there is one man who will benefit from this.

Indeed, Adam Forshaw’s campaign was deemed to be over a few weeks ago when he went under the knife to sort out his ongoing injury problems, and Phil Hay stated that he’s expected to be back in pre-season.

However, the time period that encompasses pre-season may now become a part of the regular campaign.

If Forshaw is back fit in time for the end of the season that will be a massive boost, especially if the fixtures are as congested as the last time football was delayed back in 1963. Liverpool were once made to play five games in eight days so United will need the depth he provides if that is the case.

It looked impossible for the former Boro man to feature again this season after his surgery, but now there’s every chance he will get to play a key part in United’s promotion charge, and that is certainly one positive to take out of this situation.

Celtic’s Victor Wanyama purchase a masterstroke

It feels like an annual occasion where Celtic’s star man walks out of the club. Kieran Tierney left in a record-breaking £25m deal for Arsenal last summer while the year before that saw Moussa Dembele walk out for £19.7m.

Add the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Fraser Forster to that and you have an alarming number of players who have walked through the exit door.

One of their best players of the last decade, however, was Victor Wanyama.

The Kenyan enforcer arrived in 2011 for a fee of just £900,000. Acquiring a work permit was a troubling situation for the Hoops who had an initial request turned down. Yet, after Neil Lennon held a conference call with the Scottish FA, his transfer from Belgian side Germinal Beerschot was confirmed.

Fortunately for Lennon and his side, the hard work they put in to sign the midfielder was all worth it.

Just 20 at the time, the holding player arrived as an unknown quantity in Glasgow. After leaving, however, he was a household name, moving to Southampton and the Premier League. He became the first in a long line of players to cross the border to St Mary’s.

However, what makes the whole deal to sign and sell Wanyama are the finances involved. Time and time again the Bhoys have taken on a healthy profit from younger players they’ve invested in and the Kenya international was no different.

Arriving for a measly fee, Celtic ultimately made a hefty £11.6m profit on the midfielder who left for £12.5m to the English top-flight in 2013.

Having played 91 games for the Glaswegians, he cost just 9.8k per game if you take into account his transfer fee – a price that was duly paid back by the Kenyan when he departed for pastures new.

However, there was more to this signing that meets the eye.

In many ways, it was redemption for Peter Lawwell who just two years prior had to write a letter of apology to the supporters. This was following a trophyless season and years of trying to catch Rangers up in the transfer market.

Though, after just a year at the club, Wanyama was already winning the title with Celtic. Funnily enough, a successive championship followed the season after. The midfield commander was the steel of the side as the Hoops began claiming back their dominance over Scottish football.

Darren Bent says Mourinho "doesn’t need" Ndombele right now

Speaking to Football Insider, Darren Bent has claimed Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho simply “can’t rely on” Tanguy Ndombele.

What did he say?

Ndombele has endured a difficult debut campaign in north London, struggling for both form and fitness. All in all, he has played just 19 times in the Premier League, whilst he came under heavy fire from Mourinho himself after a particularly disappointing display away at Burnley.

And now, former Spurs ace Bent has suggested that the Frenchman’s lack of consistency and durability means he isn’t your typical Mourinho player, and felt he isn’t a risk worth taking.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

He said: “I think when you’ve got somebody like Ndombele, with all that ability and all that quality, but he can’t produce it on a regular basis – Mourinho doesn’t need players like that right now.

“Jose’s probably thinking to himself, that he’s got all the ability in the world, but he needs someone who can play week after week. He can’t take the risk of it being every now and then. They can’t rely on him as much they would like.”

Consistency

For all the criticism that has headed Ndombele’s way this season, there can be no question that he has shown flashes of the enormous potential that prompted Spurs to splash out big-money to sign him from French side Lyon last summer.

A super long-range strike against Aston Villa under-lined that to a tee, and it would be a major shame if the Frenchman didn’t go on to become a long-term success at the club.

But with Mourinho in charge, the room for a player to make mistakes and grow into his craft is minimal. The Portuguese boss has delivered instant success almost everywhere he’s been, winning domestic and European titles.

If Ndombele doesn’t sharpen his act very soon, then the midfielder could be walking out the exit door very soon.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans react to an update on their chase for this left-back.

Rangers would "seriously think" about letting Glen Kamara leave

Speaking to Football Insider, Alan Hutton has claimed Rangers would “seriously think” about selling Glen Kamara this summer if they received a big-money bid for him.

What did he say?

The Finland international has been a virtual ever-present for Steven Gerrard’s side this season, making 39 appearances across all competitions. The 24-year-old has proven himself to be great value for money for the club, after initially arriving for a measly £50k.

Reports in recent weeks have claimed that Ligue 1 side Marseille are lining up a swoop for the midfielder this summer, and that Kamara is now being valued at around €10m (£8.8m).

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

After hearing about the French outfit’s interest, Hutton claimed that Rangers could potentially cash in on their ace, and make some big profit. He said: “It’s unbelievable. Really, from a financial point of view at Rangers, that’s what you’re looking to do. Unearth a gem, get him in, get him playing well and then kind of move him on for a decent sum of money. It would be amazing value if they were to sell him.

“He’s come in and he’s done unbelievably well. From Dundee, to make that step up to a massive team and play week in, week out, especially in Europe and stuff, I think he’s done excellent. He’s still got plenty of time on his hands but ultimately I think everybody’s got a price on your head no matter who you are. If somebody was to come in with a concrete offer at the figures we’re talking, I’m sure Rangers would seriously think about taking it.”

Decision

Whilst Gerrard’s side could make a potentially tasty profit on their midfielder, the real question is whether Rangers would benefit more from actually keeping him, rather than selling him and trying to find an adequate replacement.

That will be the key decision that the club will have to make if Marseille or any other side put in an offer for Kamara, but it’s a testament to their recruitment team that a player they bought for absolute pittance, is being talked about as someone who could fetch almost £10m.

A lot of credit goes to those involved behind the scenes at the club.

The run-in: Predicting Newcastle’s fight against relegation

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle United face a battle for their Premier League survival.

The Magpies are currently 16th, one point clear of 18th-placed Southampton and level with Cardiff City, but ahead on goal difference, with just 12 games of the season to go.

Newcastle’s run-in: Huddersfield Town (H), Burnley (H), West Ham (A), Everton (H), Bournemouth (A), Arsenal (A), Crystal Palace (H), Leicester City (A), Southampton (H), Brighton & Hove Albion (A), Liverpool (H), Fulham (A).

Newcastle are fortunate that they only play two top-six teams between now and the end of the season.

Games against Arsenal and Liverpool are not likely to glean any points for the Magpies, meaning Rafael Benitez’s side are better off focusing on taking points from the teams around them.

The visit of Huddersfield Town next weekend could well set the tone. The Terriers are rock-bottom and 14 points off Cardiff. In short, they need a miracle. Newcastle should take all three points. Even in their current predicament, it would be a shock if they didn’t.

The visit of Burnley, in 15th, is likely to be a cagey affair and could well be a draw, while West Ham will expect to win at the London Stadium when Newcastle visit.

There is scope for United taking a point off Everton, but trips to Bournemouth and the Gunners are unlikely to see any return.

Crystal Palace, though, could well be a scalp taken, and three points against Roy Hodgson’s men would be a major boost, with tough clashes against Leicester, Southampton, Brighton and the Reds thereafter.

A return of one point from a possible 12 there seems the likeliest outcome – a draw with the Saints, also scrapping, would not do either side a favour but is the most foreseeable result.

A trip to London to face Fulham on the final day could well be full of drama but the Cottagers are already eight points adrift and may well be relegated beforehand. Three points for the Magpies would seem a banker if Claudio Ranieri’s men are already contemplating life in the Championship.

Predicted points: 12 – Newcastle finish on 37 points

Much like Southampton – who Football FanCast predict to end the season with 36 points – Newcastle are set to fall short of the 40-point mark which is routinely said to guarantee survival.

However, there really appears to be only one spot to fill in the bottom three.

Huddersfield and Fulham are surely doomed, barring a miracle or a bizarre twist of fate, leaving the likes of Southampton, Newcastle and Cardiff, as well as perhaps Burnley, Brighton and Crystal Palace, all battling to avoid finishing 18th.

If FFC’s predictions are correct, Newcastle will finish above Southampton, and that may well be enough.

The two sides play each other on April 20th and that game could well determine which of the two drops through the trapdoor into the Championship, provided Cardiff do not implode and take the spot for themselves.
