Villain: Mo Salah looked out of his depth as Liverpool crash in Barcelona

Barcelona 3-0 Liverpool: Reds made to rue wasted opportunities as Barcelona take one giant leap towards Champions League final.

Well, what can we say about last night’s game? Liverpool should have done better with their chances and Barca were clinical, as simple as that.

As Ray Hudson would say, the magisterial Messi made all the difference last night and put Barcelona on the cusp of the Champions League final by scoring twice in a 3-0 drubbing over Liverpool in the first leg of their last-four battle on Wednesday, making it 600 goals for the Catalans in the process. Ridiculous.

Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez ruffled a few feathers when he opened the scoring in the 26th minute of an evenly balanced first half at the Nou Camp, squeezing himself between two Liverpool defenders to chip over Alisson, like a rat squeezing itself through subway drains.

Messi collected his first of the night to give Barcelona their all-important second late into the second half (75), tapping home from close range on the rebound after Suarez’s knee shot cascaded off the crossbar.

The Argentine wizard then added to Barcelona’s already hefty advantage with what can only be described as a special goal, smashing the top corner with a sweet free kick in the 82nd minute.

Liverpool had the chance to grab a goal late on to make their job at home a little easier, but Mohamed Salah almost impossibly flunked his right-footed shot onto the post with the goal gaping in front of him.

Uphill climb for the Reds who now have it all to do next week.

Considering the whole of the Liverpool squad put in an impressive shift, and we dare say deserved a lot more from the tie, it is difficult to choose who exactly deserves villain status. However, on a day where Klopp needed his star men to perform in front of goal, Mohamed Salah fell desperately short.

The Egyptian seemingly had Clement Lenglet in his back pocket for much of the game and with the Frenchman on a yellow card, should have made so much more of his chances to attack. But he didn’t and ultimately his wastefulness in front of goal left Barcelona undeservedly unpunished.

Salah showed signs of his best when he forced Ter Stegen into an impressive save with a driven shot from the edge of the area, but his worst also came out – and Liverpool fans could be looking back on that awful miss at the end of the game in a week’s time and wondering what could have been.

Lost and Won: Liverpool vs Wolves

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool take on Wolves this weekend in a game that, in the grand scheme of things, might not matter at all.

Jurgen Klopp’s men need to win at Anfield, of course, but they are second in the Premier League and they need Manchester City to slip up.

City face Brighton on Sunday aware that a victory will see them crowned champions once again. It’s expected.

But this game could also mean everything. If City do slip, if the pressure does get to them, the Reds have to ensure they can pounce to win their first league title in a generation.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side will be tough opposition, though. They are currently seventh and have already dumped the Reds out of the FA Cup.

Football FanCast takes a look at where the game could be won and lost…

The key battle – Ruben Neves vs Jordan Henderson

Midfield is a key area in any game but particularly when Wolves are involved.

Santo has built a side that occupies the midfield space remarkably well, with players consistently asked to both defend and attack.

Ruben Neves is key to this; his range of passing makes him a superlative deep-lying playmaker while he is also adept at bombing forward and firing shots at goal.

Jordan Henderson will surely be employed by Jurgen Klopp to stop him.

Henderson does not possess the range of skills that Neves does but he is an assiduous talent, constantly hassling and harrying those he is asked to mark.

If he can cut off Neves, he can cut off Wolves’ supply line. That could be vital.

The key dynamic – Liverpool’s tiredness

Liverpool beat Barcelona in midweek in a truly stunning Champions League turnaround.

They turned a 3-0 first leg deficit around as they rallied to win 4-0 at Anfield on a magical European night at the grand old stadium.

But how much of a role could that play in Sunday’s fixture?

Wolves are better rested and, while the momentum generated by the Reds is immeasurable, Santo’s men may be well placed to take advantage.

They have some very quick players, particularly going forward, and could pick Liverpool off.

Klopp’s men need to be clinical and efficient if they are to avoid seeing their own fatigue play into the result.

The deciding factor – Pressure, pressure, pressure

What happens if City go behind?

Both teams will be playing at the same time, of course, but fans will have the other match in the palm of their hands.

A victory for Pep Guardiola’s men is expected but will the Reds cope if, all of a sudden, the title is in their hands?

Pressure is one of the hardest things on this planet to measure but it could have a detrimental effect on the Reds.

Or, at the same time, it could galvanise them to complete another miraculous comeback and see them crowned champions.

The impact subs – Rhian Brewster vs Adama Traore

Rhian Brewster has been promoted to the first-team squad in the absence of both Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino and was on the bench against Barcelona.

He has a prodigious goal-scoring talent and was the top scorer at the Under-17 World Cup last summer, when England were crowned champions.

If the score isn’t going in Liverpool’s favour, Klopp could turn to his teenage wildcard and thrust the 19-year-old into the action.

On the Wolves side, Adama Traore is perhaps the quickest player in the Premier League and, even if his end product leaves something to be desired, his effect in the latter stages of games cannot be underestimated.

He has pace to burn and could be a potent weapon on the counter-attack late on, particularly if Liverpool need a goal.

Tottenham Hotspur looking in all the wrong places for Mousa Dembele’s replacement

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur are tracking Torino midfielder Soualiho Meite, per Calciomercato.

What’s the word?

Meite, an ex-France youth international who has been capped at Under-16, Under-17, Under-19 and Under-20 level, mainly plays in defensive midfield in Serie A.

Now 25, the star moved to Torino from Monaco in 2018 and has already endured something of a nomadic career, also playing for Auxerre and Lille as well as Zulte Waregem and Bordeaux on loan.

However, Spurs are said to be interested as they look to make their first signing since January 2018 this summer.

The report claims that Meite, valued at £11.7million by Transfermarkt, could leave if Torino fail to qualify for the Europa League this season; they are currently seventh, two points behind current qualifiers Roma with two games of the season remaining.

A major punt

This seems like a punt from Spurs.

Meite hasn’t settled at a club yet and he has played just 36 times in total for Torino, scoring twice and laying on three assists.

If the club are to replace Mousa Dembele, who left in January, one feels that they need the finished article with some genuine experience of playing in the top-flight.

Meite, at this stage, does not offer that. He doesn’t have the grace in possession, the elegance in the tackle or the pure footballing knowledge to offer the same game-changing qualities as the Belgian.

At his best, Dembele was perhaps the finest midfielder in the Premier League, capable of rampaging through the opposition press and winning the ball back before pulling off a Cruyff turn to get out of trouble.

We have seen no evidence that Meite can do either of those things and it is remarkably unlikely that he would be able to step into Dembele’s shoes.

He could well turn out to be a star, of course, and the club’s scouting department cannot be underestimated.

But if Mauricio Pochettino’s men are to move to the next level, they need to be aiming higher.

Crystal Palace: Steve Parish needs to be realistic with Wilfried Zaha’s situation

The relationship between Crystal Palace and Wilfried Zaha might be starting to take an ugly turn.

The man lauded as their saviour for recent years is seemingly angling (as per Sky Sports) for a move away from the club. However, one can’t really blame him for displaying ambition, right?

Granted that Palace saved him from despair when his career almost sunk at Manchester  United, but he’s repaid their faith and then some. It’s due to the sizzling winger’s work that they’re still in the Premier League, after all. Indeed, he acted as creator, goal-scorer and also provided entertainment with his unmatched trickery.

It’s time for the Eagles to let him go enjoy himself a little. However, the major stumbling block in his sale is the unrealistic price tag put up for him. Steve Parish doesn’t want to lose him cheap, so he’s reportedly (as per the Daily Mail) slapped a huge £100 million fee for him. Surely, this is aggravating both Zaha (who the Telegraph said feared he could be priced out of a move) and interested parties.

Maybe Parish should listen to former chairman Simon Jordan’s advice, stating the asking fee to be lowered down to around £60 million. Zaha might’ve scored 10 goals last season, more than many top stars, yet he’s not the elite talent for which clubs will pay unreasonable amounts.

To disable the situation from getting worse, Parish needs to think reasonably. It’s not like Palace won’t be able to find a successor for anything less than the asked fee. It’s time for the Eagles to stop playing hardball and repay Zaha’s impeccable contribution for letting him go for an adequate price.

Palace fans, do you think Zaha’s asked fee should be lowered? Join the discussion by commenting below…

Tottenham: Agustin Almendra would be a risky addition

Tottenham Hotspur cannot look too far forward with the Champions League final on the horizon, however, they must have a successful summer if they are to continue their upward trajectory.

If Spurs are to continue their challenge for silverware, Mauricio Pochettino is going to have to use the upcoming transfer window wisely and make a couple of additions that would complement the squad and help move his team forward.

However, one of his rumoured targets could be considered a rather risky acquisition and one that should leave the north London outfit with questions they need to answer before deciding whether to make a move for him.

According to AS Argentina, Tottenham are thought to be interested in signing Boca Juniors’ star Agustin Almendra.

For those that do not know who he is, the 19-year-old is a skilful midfielder that has recently established himself in his club’s first-team. He has also been recognised by his national team as he currently captains the Under-20 side.

To put things further into perspective, Almendra is a player who has piqued the interest of several of Europe’s biggest clubs, with the likes of Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, Juventus, Valencia, Manchester City, Porto and Napoli all keen on him (AS).

So, with all that talent and promise, why would he be a risky acquisition for Tottenham to make this summer?

Well, he is not experienced enough to help Spurs in their pursuit of glory and is still an unproven talent in the game, making his alleged €27million (£23.7m) release clause seem rather expensive to activate at this moment in time (AS).

If they want to be able to reduce the gap in quality between them and the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City, then it might be wise to look at a player who has been there and got the t-shirt to prove it.

There is no doubt that Almendra has the potential to thrive under Pochettino in the future and could benefit from the manager’s ability to develop youngsters, however, the Premier League side already have the likes of Harry Winks and Oliver Skipp in the middle of the park coming through nicely.

Adding the South American to the mix will hamper someone’s chances of making it at the club, regardless of how promising all three of them are.

The teenager also has a history of knee injuries to be concerned with already as well (Transfermarkt), and although they have not been too serious, it should leave Tottenham with some food for thought.

Almendra could turn out to be a quality signing, it is too hard to tell at this stage, however, he could be a huge risk and one that Spurs may regret taking if they look to bring him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

Tottenham fans, what are your thoughts regarding Almemdra? Do you think it would be a piece of risky business or one Spurs should look to do? Let us know your thoughts below!
