Rangers legend Derek Johnstone is hoping to see some young players stake a claim to be members of Steven Gerrard’s first-team squad next season, speaking to The Evening Times.

What’s he said?

Rangers will soon be heading off for a ten day pre-season training camp in Portugal and if last year’s similar trip is anything to go by, plenty of youngsters will be making the trip too, to train alongside established first-team members.

Johnstone believes it’s the perfect chance for them to show the progress they have made in the club’s reserve and youth sides.

As quoted by The Evening Times, he said:

“Steven Gerrard has always said that he will give his young players a game at Rangers if they can prove that they are good enough. That is the chance a few of them have at the training camp in Portugal and in the friendly fixtures we’ve got this summer.

The manager played down the importance of the kids winning the leagues and cups that they won last season, saying it was more about players coming through the ranks.

That is true. It won’t do the youngsters any harm having that mentality, though, because when you get to that first team you have to be a winner.It is a wonderful feeling when you are that age and you are winning for Rangers but the players want to do it up a level and they need to catch Steven’s eye this summer.”

Who’s closest to getting a chance?

Gerrard has already shown that youngsters like Glenn Middleton will get a first-team opportunity if they impress enough of the training pitch. The winger got plenty of game time in the first half of last season before falling out of favour at senior level.

The former Norwich player will be hoping he can impress again over the next few weeks, having looked back to his exciting best for the reserve side in the closing stages of last term.

Another out to impress will be striker Zak Rudden, who scored 12 goals in the Scottish Championship last term on loan at Falkirk and on Friday signed a new contract.

With others, such as Scottish Youth Cup final man of the match Josh McPake and reserves team captain Cammy Palmer, also showing good progress, Gerrard will have plenty of options to turn to in upcoming friendlies.

وشدد: “نحتاج لاستعادته سريعًا، أجويرو لاعب لا يمكن أن تشك فيه، لديه إمكانات رائعة، مهاجم كبير ومن أساطير هذا النادي”.

وأردف: “جميع اللاعبين جاهزون لمواجهة مارسيليا، سنقرر غدًا من سيشارك، سنلعب من أجل الفوز حتى لو كانت نقاط المباراة لا تؤثر على التأهل، سيكون هناك 4 أو 5 لاعبين من الأكاديمية ضمن الفريق غدًا”.

وعن مواجهة مانشستر يونايتد الأسبوع المقبل في الديربي: “لا نفكر فيهم الآن، سيتم التركيز عليهم بعد مباراة مارسيليا، هو ديربي قبل أي شيء، وبالتأكيد ستظل هذه المباراة من أهم المباريات في الموسم”.

وعن فيرناندينيو، قال جوارديولا: “لقد عاد من الإصابة، لعب بشكل رائع ضد بورتو، يريد لعب 3 مباريات في الأسبوع، نحاول التعامل معه، لأنه لم يكن هو نفس اللاعب منذ 4 سنوات، إنه يتدرب جيدًا، هو قائدنا، وسنكون بحاجة له غدًا ويوم السبت”.

وتحدث عن فيل فودين: “هذا الموسم بالنسبة له موسم القمة، منذ المباراة الأولى له، هو لاعب شاب ولديه طاقة وجوده، بالطبع عليه أن يتحسن، ويتطور داخل منطقة الجزاء في عملية تسجيل الأهداف، وأن يكون أكثر صبرًا”.

واختتم بالحديث عن ميندي: “لم يكن مصابًا، لعب بانتظام وبشكل جيد مؤخرًا، لا يزال لم يصل للمستوى الذي نعرفه، عندما يتمكن من استعادة لياقته بشكل كامل، وتبتعد عنه الإصابات، يمكنه أن يقدم أشياء أفضل”.

Without Vardy and Riyad Mahrez, there almost certainly wouldn’t have been any Premier League fairytale as the duo’s chemistry in the Leicester squad played a major role in the Foxes’ title-winning season.

The duo combined eight times in the 2015/16 campaign, linking up against the likes of Chelsea, Everton and Liverpool as the Foxes steamrolled past nearly everyone in their path, with Vardy’s form that year earning him a place in England’s Euro 2016 squad. As for Mahrez, the now Manchester City winger went on to claim the PFA Player of the Year award to put the icing on the cake.

David Nugent – 20 goal contributions

Although David Nugent wasn’t part of the Premier League-winning side, his time with Leicester City is still important in the grand scheme of things, and the now 34-year-old striker enjoyed a fruitful partnership with Vardy.

The forwards combined 13 times in Leicester’s Championship-winning season in 2013/14 as well as in the Foxes’ famous 5-3 win against Manchester United the following year, the game where Vardy truly introduced himself to the Premier League.

Danny Drinkwater – 10 goal contributions

Leicester’s rise to Premier League glory brought many names from that squad into the limelight, one of whom being Danny Drinkwater who just like Nugent and Vardy had been with the club since the Championship days. And for a deep-lying midfielder, the now Chelsea man struck up a good relationship with the Foxes number nine.

The duo’s most important goal, though, came in Leicester’s Champions League round-of-16 tie against Sevilla, with Drinkwater assisting Vardy for the vital away goal that would prove the difference in Leicester progressing to their first ever European quarter-final.

Marc Albrighton – 8 goal contributions

Despite Marc Albrighton being a pivotal figure in Leicester’s title-winning squad, the winger and Vardy didn’t combine as much as you would imagine in that season, with the duo linking just once in the opening game against Sunderland.

However, the duo have popped up with some important goals together, namely in Leicester’s 2-1 win over Manchester City last season that almost careened Pep Guardiola’s Premier League title chances.

Shinji Okazaki – 7 goal contributions

One of Vardy’s regular partners for the title-winning season alongside Leonardo Ulloa, Shinji Okazaki helped the Englishman produce some of his best football with busy and creative displays just behind him. In short, Okazaki did the dirty work while Vardy spared his legs for those lunging runs beyond opposition backlines.

The duo combined in important wins against Everton, Liverpool and Newcastle United in the 2015/16 season and their 7 overall goal contributions is pretty impressive considering Okazaki has only ever actually scored 19 times for the Midlands outfit.

وأضاف: “نحن لا نغير المدربي للتباهي، لا أعتقد أنه قد يكون مفاجئ لـ توخيل أن تتم إقالته، لم تكن هذه المرة الأولى التي نناقش الأمور معه، وهو لا يفهمني، حتى الآن هناك سوء فهم بيننا، لكننا نحترمه”.

وشدد: “يجب أن يفهم الجميع بأن القرارات لا تُفرص علينا، لأن باريس سان جيرمان أصبح الآن كيانًا منظمًا ومهنيًا للغاية، وله رؤية طويلة المدى وهناك العديد من الأشخاص الأكفاء، بداية من ناصر الخليفي الذي لديه فكرة واضحة”.

وأردف: “هناك من كان ينتظر عودتي إلى باريس سان جيرمان، وفي كل يوم أسمع (ليو يفعل هذا، ليو يقوم بذلك)، كل هذه الأمور ليست صحيحة، أنا لا أدير النادي وحدي، ونحن لا ندير النادي بالأهواء”.

وأوضح: “نحن لا ننفق الملايين في شراء اللاعبين أو بناء مركز تدريب جديد، ونقضي وقتًا لاختيار المدرب، لمجرد أننا في نزهة، هناك عمل شاق نقوم به جميعًا في باريس سان جيرمان”.

وعن العلاقة بين قطر وباريس سان جيرمان: “العاطفة قوية بين باريس سان جيرمان وقطر، ما زلت أعتقد أن الناس ليسوا دائمًا ممتنين جدًا لهذا الاتفاق بين النادي والدولة”.

وأشار: “شاهد ماذا فعل باريس سان جيرمان للدوري الفرنسي، لقد جلبنا باستوري وأنشيلوتي، وسيلفا وإبراهيموفيتش، وبيكهام وكافاني ونيمار ومبابي وماركينيوس وفيراتي ودي ماريا وإيكاردي ونافاس والعديد من اللاعبين الكبار الآخرين، كيف لغيرنا أن يفعل ذلك في الدوري الفرنسي”.

واختتم: “أتمنى التوقف عن الحديث طوال الوقت عن الأموال، كل العمل والالتزام الذي قام به باريس سان جيرمان أكبر من الأموال، ولكن لشهرة كرة القدم الفرنسية في الخارج”.

وقال سميث في المؤتمر الصحفي الخاص بالمباراة: “الجميع في حالة جاهزية، وكل اللاعبين تعافوا بشكل جيد”.

وأضاف: “ماكجين سيغيب للإيقاف بعدما تلقى خمس بطاقات صفراء، وتريزيجيه سيعود مرة أخرى إلى الفريق”.

وواصل: “لقد تدربنا بشكل جيد، وقمنا بجلسة انتعاش، وخُضنا جلستين تدريبتين، وأرى أنّ الجميع جاهز”.

After seeing fellow Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah take the Premier League by storm, Sadio Mane enjoyed a barnstorming season of his own last year to lay his hands on the Golden Boot.

The Senegal international has been an undeniable success since moving from rivals Southampton and the Reds clearly haven’t forgotten the impact he has had.

Liverpool’s official Twitter account paid tribute to Mane’s signing back in late June of 2016, and fans of the Merseyside club responded by insisting that this was the deal that kick-started Jurgen Klopp’s revolution at Anfield.

Many claimed that Mane’s arrival was the “proper start of the Klopp era” and suggested that their successes in recent seasons – which culminated in lifting the Champions League for the sixth time this year – began its journey from the moment he set foot at Liverpool.

Indeed, Reds fans thanked Klopp for finding another gem in the market and hailed his record in the transfer window since he became boss.

Rangers legend Derek Johnstone has called on Rangers to make European football an important part of their upcoming season, as reported by The Evening Times.

What’s he said?

Rangers’ 2019/20 campaign kicks off in just a few days time, with the club set to face St Joseph’s of Gibraltar next Tuesday away from home.

With Celtic gunning for a record-equalling ninth title in a row, there’s an argument to say that the Gers must put all their eggs in the league basket next term, rather than be distracted by cup competitions or Europe.

Johnstone though, feels that is not in keeping with the tradition of the club.

As quoted by The Evening Times, the Ibrox legend said:

“I know there is a bit of debate amongst the supporters about how important the Europa League is for Rangers this season and how much emphasis Steven Gerrard should put on it.

“As the manager said last week, he won’t overlook the Europa League and he certainly won’t treat any competition that Rangers enter lightly. You just can’t do that.

“This is a club that has to win things and every tournament that we are in, we have to go out to win it and bring the silverware to Ibrox.

“You can’t sacrifice the Europa League to give you a better chance in the Premiership and you can’t downplay either of the domestic cups to try and win the league. That is not the attitude at Rangers.

“It was great to have European football back at Ibrox last season and the manager and the players will be just as determined to reach the group stages as they were last term.”

Is he right?

The obvious argument here being missed is that if Rangers are good enough to qualify and compete in the UEFA Europa League stages and beyond, then they’ll likely be good enough to win most of their games in domestic action.

Testing themselves against European opponents is a great way for the Gers’ emerging talent to develop, become more experienced and more reliable talents.

Rangers must benchmark themselves against the highest competition available to them and that will likely be their European opponents this season, outside of rivals Celtic.

Johnstone is right to assert that a winning mentality must be forged across any and all competitions if Steven Gerrard’s team are to truly compete next term.

آرسنال أعلن في وقت سابق من اليوم الأربعاء، ضم أوديجارد من ريال مدريد، حتى نهاية الموسم الجاري، على سبيل الإعارة.

وقال أرتيتا في تصريحات نشرها الموقع الرسمي لناديه: “إنه لأمر رائع أننا قمنا بالتعاقد مع أوديجارد، لينضم لنا حتى نهاية الموسم، أنا أعرفه بشكل جيد، وعلى الرغم من أنه لا يزال صغيرًا، إلا أنه يلعب في مستوى عالٍ مُنذ فترة”.

ومن جانبه قال السكرتير الفني للنادي والمسؤول عن التعاقدات، إيدو: “يُسعدنا أنّ نرحب بمارتن في النادي حتى نهاية الموسم، أود أنّ أشكر الجميع في ريال مدريد وممثلي مارتن على تعاونهم في تحقيق هذه الخطوة”.

وأتم تصريحاته قائلًا: “مارتن موهبة استثنائية ونحن نعزز فريقنا من خلال تقديم لاعب هجومي مثير لـ آرسنال، للأشهر المتبقية من هذا الموسم”.

According to the London Evening Standard, there is still a contract offer of ‘over £150,000 a week’ on the table from Tottenham Hotspur for Christian Eriksen.

Eriksen will see his current deal with Spurs expire at the end of the 2019-20 campaign.

The 27-year-old scored 10 times and registered 17 assists in 51 appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s side during the 2018-19 season.

Tottenham are in a tough position when it comes to the Denmark international, however, as his deal now has less than 12 months to run.

But the London Evening Standard have suggested that the club are hoping he can extend that deal, although Eriksen is yet to accept the reported offer lying on the table.

The Spurs fans have been on social media offering their views on the situation as the ongoing saga continues to rumble on.

And it would be fair to say that there are a lot of mixed options regarding whether the club should attempt to cash in this summer or extend his current deal.
