Aston Villa’s turnaround evident from Ron Vlaar’s damning comments about relegation

Aston Villa’s former captain Ron Vlaar has had his say on his time in the West Midlands, giving a damning indictment of the situation the club found itself in, speaking to The Athletic.

What’s he said?

Vlaar joined the club in 2012 from Eredivisie outfit Feyenoord and soon became the captain after the unfortunate circumstances of Stiliyan Petrov who was battling cancer.

The 34-year-old, who is still playing football for AZ Alkmaar, made 88 appearances at Villa Park before leaving in the summer of 2015.

The following season, Villa were relegated from the Premier League after finishing bottom and it certainly wasn’t a surprise for Vlaar who offered an incredible insight into what happened. He told The Athletic:

“I was fighting with myself because of the lack of direction and I wanted to see some more of my team-mates trying to improve their game.

“I missed the hunger from those around me to improve. There wasn’t much extra training or effort, and if some of [the players] didn’t play, they were disappointed and their laziness started to show.

“It’s not a coincidence Villa went down because there were no investments towards the end, either. It wasn’t going to change. I wasn’t surprised when Aston Villa were relegated.”

Things are different now under Dean Smith

Vlaar’s comments only highlight how things have changed in the space of just five years.

Lacking direction, laziness and no investment – three things you’d hardly associate with this current Villa crop and that’s all down to Dean Smith and his team.

They are now playing a more attacking and direct style of football that requires the energetic sort of player – any laziness in this squad isn’t going to get you very far.

The club’s owners have also splashed out around £144.5m on 12 summer arrivals, demonstrating that a lack of investment now certainly isn’t an issue.

Against Tottenham on the opening weekend, a team who themselves play a fast-paced passing game, Villa recorded 78.1% passing success rate which isn’t too shabby considering the quality of opposition and ranked 13th for teams in the division last week.

The difference in their play was summed up by the 210 short passes they made against Spurs, detailing the hard work put in during training.

Last season in their Championship playoff-winning campaign, Smith’s side were the third best in terms of passing success averaging 79.8% for the season so it only goes some way in showing how a lackadaisical attitude has been fully transformed in the West Midlands.

Rangers signing Andy King is a big boost to Steven Gerrard

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Leicester City central midfielder Andy King has joined Rangers on a season-long loan, and it could be a deal that makes sense on so many levels.

What’s the story?

The 30-year-old has become Steven Gerrard’s tenth signing of the summer window, as the gaffer looks to add to his midfield options. King’s Rangers move was confirmed after Foxes’ boss Brendan Rodgers sanctioned the switch.

Having made the temporary switch to Ibrox, the Welshman adds even more quality to a strong crop of central midfielders already at the club. With Joe Aribo, Steve Davis, Ryan Jack, Greg Docherty and Glen Kamara all being tried in the middle of the park this season, Gerrard already has a strong bunch to call upon.

The greatest player ever to grace the Scottish Premiership is revealed in the video below…

With King out of contract at the end of the season, it could be a ‘try before you buy’ style deal for the Gers, just as they did with Davis.

A good bit of business

While some fans weren’t too pleased with the 30-year-old being linked to the club, it’s actually a very smart deal on several levels.

The Gers will be hoping to play Europa League football until at least Christmas time again this campaign, so will need plenty of bodies. Having six first-team central midfielders, not including the versatile Scott Arfield and Andy Halliday, means Gerrard has plenty of good options to rotate.

This will be absolutely crucial if important league fixtures come just a few days after trips across Europe.

As well as adding depth to the squad, King’s experience of winning a league title could prove invaluable. Of Gerrard’s squad, only Alfredo Morelos, Davis, Filip Helander and Allan McGregor know what it takes to win the top league in a country.

King could impart his knowledge of being an underdog at Leicester as the Gers do battle with the more-fancied Celtic for the Premiership title this season.

The move also has a similar feel to it as Jermain Defoe’s switch. Both have enjoyed good Premier League careers but struggled to find consistent playing time as they aged, and Defoe has proven he still has plenty to offer since moving north of the border. King could be the next.

A low-risk loan move for a Premier League winner is the ideal signing for Gerrard, adding depth, quality and experience all without spending a penny, just like he did with the swoop for Defoe.

West Ham’s potential XI against Norwich City

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United face Norwich City this weekend.

They will be without Michail Antonio after his shock injury blow against Newport County in midweek, while Winston Reid is also ruled out.

Javier Hernandez could return, however, after shaking off a knee injury.

After the weekend win over Watford, in which summer signing Sebastian Haller scored twice, the Hammers need to keep their momentum going as they take on Daniel Farke’s side, who lost 3-2 to Chelsea on Saturday.

Football FanCast takes a look at how the Hammers could line up this weekend…

This is a rarity for Manuel Pellegrini: he can pick a completely full-strength XI.

With pretty much all of his first-team players fit, the backline is unlikely to change from the selection that helped defeat Watford.

Jack Wilshere, of course, scored against Newport and generally enjoyed an excellent game but it is difficult to foresee the former Manchester City boss dropping either Mark Noble or Declan Rice.

Further forward, Pablo Fornals is fit to play on the right, while Felipe Anderson, who did play a part in the League Cup victory, is a shoo-in on the left flank.

Wilshere could well play in the No.10 role but it is more likely that it’ll be Manuel Lanzini providing support to Haller.

The Frenchman got off the mark in the Premier League with a brace and will be out to add even more to his tally against the Canaries, who have conceded eight goals in three top-flight games thus far this season.

QPR ace Ryan Manning fits Mark Warburton’s 3-5-2 system like a glove

[ad_pod ]

QPR have enjoyed a steady, albeit unspectacular, start to the campaign under Mark Warburton using a 4-2-3-1 formation, which had seen them win two and lose two of their five Championship games before Saturday’s meeting with Sheffield Wednesday.

However, for the trip to Hillsborough, Warburton decided to mix things up a bit.

What did he do?

The former Rangers and Brentford boss decided to ditch his 4-2-3-1 system and adopt a 5-3-2 formation, which seemed to move into a 3-5-2 with wing-backs when the R’s went forward.

It appeared to have the desired effect as two second-half goals from Jordan Hugill in the space of four minutes handed the Londoners all three points, after Steven Fletcher had given the Owls a 23rd-minute lead.

Whilst a lot of QPR players enjoyed a good afternoon with some fine showings out there, one man performed exceptionally well and appears to fit this new system like a glove.

Who was it?

Ryan Manning. The left-back has started all six of the R’s Championship games so far this season, but hadn’t performed anywhere near as well as he did on Saturday in any of the previous outings.

The 23-year-old had previously racked up the following WhoScored ratings for his performances before the win over Sheffield Wednesday:

– 6.91 vs Stoke

– 7.1 vs Huddersfield

– 6.79 vs Bristol City

– 6.74 vs Swansea

– 7.07 vs Wigan

Watch the video below to find out how CR7 achieves some his best skills…

At Hillsborough however, Manning recorded a rating of 8.48, blowing all of his previous ratings out of the water.

The Irishman also made three key passes in his new left-back role – more than anyone else on the pitch – with one of them earning him an assist. Additionally, Manning made a game-high four dribbles and was fouled five times in what was an all-action performance from him up and down the left-flank.

Out of all the QPR players who impressed in this new system, it appears to suit Manning’s traits the best.

Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings has been groomed perfectly for England duty

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings has had quite the career renaissance in 2019.

He found himself massively out of favour at Bournemouth, so he was duly sent out on loan to Villa Park, and he quickly became the clear choice at centre-back, going on to contribute substantially in their historic ten-game winning run.

After gaining promotion with the club, he then signed permanently in a £20m deal and in the Premier League so far, he’s clearly continued his imperious form as the 26-year-old has been called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for their 2020 European Championship qualifiers during this international break.

Watch Aston Villa Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

That’s quite a turn around for a defender that had played just 17 Premier League matches across four seasons – serious injury only six minutes into his Cherries career effectively placed havoc with his time on the south coast.

He suffered torn anterior and medial ligaments in his knee, which ruled him out for well over a season.

On the Chalkboard

His performances can’t have sprung randomly from anywhere; the upturn has to be a correlation with his arrival at Villa, as he has had the perfect mentor to learn from.

Legendary Chelsea and England centre-back John Terry is the assistant manager at the club to Dean Smith, so undoubtedly he has contributed to Mings’ change in fortunes.

Terry captained England 34 times and could be the man to help England find a towering long-term option at centre-back.

The 6 foot 5 defender has the ‘ideal teacher’ according to Smith, who said: “JT has been an influence on Tyrone since he’s been here; he’s getting better and better. JT will give him a heads up [about being in the England squad], but Tom Heaton is also a regular in the set-up.”

Find out which Premier League stadium has been ranked the worst in the video below…

Smith also describes Mings as a ‘born leader’ in the dressing room, which admittedly only goes to show the effect of having someone like Terry around has had.

The 26-year-old is averaging a mighty 9.8 clearances per game in the league, which is the highest in the division by some margin, on top of 2.3 blocks and 1.5 interceptions per match, according to WhoScored.

So it’s no wonder that the titan is part of the England setup this time around. He’s been perfectly groomed, even if unknowingly, for this moment – thanks to Terry.
