Grant Leadbitter was Lee Johnson’s true Sunderland hero in the Black Cats’ 4-0 rout of Lincoln City at the LNER Stadium on Saturday.

Johnson saw his Stadium of Light natives command proceedings to move within touching distance of the League One play-pff positions, with goals from Leadbitter, Jack Diamond and a brace from Charlie Wyke enough to close the gap to just two points and with a game in hand.

Leadbitter struck the visitor’s first of the match when he converted from the spot by sending Alex Palmer the wrong way after a foul by Jorge Grant on Diamond, and continued to set the tone as he brought a commanding presence to the engine room.

Leadbitter has been praised throughout the 2020/21 season for his efforts in bringing an experienced voice to the core of Sunderland’s midfield, having now started 14 of the Black Cats’ opening 16 games and missed just eight minutes when he has featured.

The Sunderland Echo’s Mark Donnelly has been among Leadbitter’s largest advocates, having lauded the 34-year-old for being the “League One cheat code” Sunderland supporters hoped he would become when brought to the club as a free agent last year.

“He’s been fantastic. He’s kind of becoming that League One cheat code that everyone hoped he would be when he signed,” Donnelly said on The Roar Podcast.

“He just looks a class above in the centre of midfield. Not only the balls he’s trying, but the balls he’s pulling off in terms of switching the play, in terms of driving Sunderland forward, he’s just going about his business, he makes it look effortless.

“If we were sat here six weeks ago and said that not only would Grant Leadbitter be back in the team, but he’d be arguably the star man, you probably would’ve been a little bit surprised. He’s come back, he’s been excellent, he’s just gone about his business – and he’s made that place his own now.”

Leadbitter was once again a class above his midfield teammates as Sunderland beat Lincoln on Saturday, registering a game-high 97 touches – 22 more than any player for either side – while completing 62 of his 76 attempted passes, also game-high numbers, per SofaScore.

Johnson would have been left astonished by Leadbitter’s passing range at the LNER Stadium as he effortlessly played possession across the pitch, with 12 of his 18 attempted long balls finding teammates.

The Black Cats product may even have found the back of the net more often on another day, having found the target with each of his three shots on Palmer’s goal, matching his offensive threat with an imperious presence in front of the back four.

Leadbitter won possession with three tackles, made three interceptions, was never dribbled past and won five of his nine ground duels, while conceding just two fouls, being fouled once and completing his only attempted dribble of the match.

Wyke will rightly take much of the acclaim with his brace moving the 28-year-old onto 12 goals in 15 League One games for the season, but Leadbitter was Johnson’s real hero.

Meanwhile, Speakman can deliver another Sunderland masterclass with this appointment.

O dirigente cruzeirense não esconde que o seu desejo, nos próximos anos, é que o torneio substitua o Campeonato Brasileiro, atualmente realizado pela Confederação Brasileira de Futebol (CBF):

– A CBF atravessa um momento de transição, e estamos dando todo o apoio. A tendência é que, no futuro, a CBF tome conta, com toda competência e carinho, do futebol da seleção brasileira. A intenção da Liga é evoluir e se tornar uma Liga Nacional. A lot of Sheffield Wednesday fans have flocked to Twitter following the sacking of Tony Pulis to share that they want to see former Owls player Nigel Pearson appointed as the Yorkshire club’s next manager. 

Pulis has been sacked just over a month after assuming the Hillsborough hot seat. Per the Owls’ official website, the 62-year-old guided Wednesday to just one Championship win during his short time at the club. 

In a statement, The Owls’ owner and chairman Dejphon Chansiri justified his decision to sack Pulis by explaining that he felt his record at the Yorkshire club was ‘not acceptable.’ 

So, what have these Sheffield Wednesday fans been saying about Pearson?

When asked about potentially returning to Hillsborough as manager one day in 2019, Pearson declared that he wouldn’t want to put his and his family’s quality of life in the city of Sheffield “at risk for a job” but he didn’t categorically rule it out and some Owls fans have been making it very clear that they want Chansiri to approach the renowned ‘escape artist’ to try and save Wednesday, who currently sit in the Championship’s relegation zone.

Speaking exclusively to FootballFanCast, Dean Windass has delivered his verdict on rumoured Aston Villa transfer target Josh King.

Reports over the summer suggested that the Norway international was an option for Dean Smith’s side, but the club eventually brought in Ollie Watkins from Brentford in a big-money deal.

However, that hasn’t stopped Villa from seemingly eyeing a fresh attempt at signing King, with The Athletic claiming recently that the Bournemouth ace could well be considered again.

Now, Windass has given his thoughts on the club potentially landing King, either in the January transfer window or future windows, telling FootballFanCast:

“I don’t think he’d fit Villa, you know? I just don’t think he’d fit.”

Whilst the 28-year-old may not be an out-and-out centre-forward, what with his ability to play off another striker or even out wide, this is still a player who Manchester United were keen on signing less than 12 months ago.

Described as a “complete package” by former Cherries boss Eddie Howe, the £45k-a-week earning forward could give Villa some much-needed strength in depth up front and also them offer an extra option out wide were they to suffer any injuries.

With Keinan Davis’ future at the club uncertain, and Wesley only just working his way back to full fitness, there’s no questioning that Smith could do with some extra firepower to help share the burden with summer signing Watkins.

And despite King’s indifferent start to the season – he’s scored no goals although his campaign has been hampered by injury – Villa should, in our opinion, be looking to bring in the Premier League-tested Norwegian in, but Windass seemingly disagrees.

The Papa John’s Trophy may not be of much significance to Sunderland but it was an excellent excuse to rediscover their confidence on Tuesday evening.

The Black Cats have drawn two successive games since returning from a bout of Covid that saw four matches postponed but they finally returned to winning ways this week.

They secured a comfortable 2-0 win over Port Vale but they were quite unfortunate it wasn’t more. Lee Johnson’s team selection was close to spot on as his dynamic attack tore the opposition to shreds.

Aiden O’Brien and Aiden McGeady popped up with the two goals, but it was hard to ignore the performance of Elliot Embleton.

The attacker has predominantly played in midfield this season but was given a rare chance to flourish further forward on Tuesday. It was an opportunity that he took brilliantly, running the Vale defence ragged.

Embleton set the tone in the first-half when he very nearly won his side a penalty. He got beyond his man and then looked to have been brought down just inside the area. However, the referee awarded a free-kick just outside the 18-yard box.

From that moment onwards, the youngster didn’t look back and was a constant threat down the flanks. Previously described as a “nightmare” to play against by Max Power, he lived up to that billing in midweek.

The 21-year-old was an absolute dynamo, striking the woodwork with an attempt on goal that he was mightily unfortunate not to score with.

Furthermore, Embleton was successful with all three of the dribbles he attempted – more than anyone on the team – and was fouled two times by Port Vale defenders.

The winger didn’t just show good qualities technically, but he was outstanding physically too. Embleton won 87.5% of the duels he contested, meaning he lost just one.

On top of that, the wide man also completed 88% of his passes in what was an assured display. A goal would have capped off his night beautifully and it was unfortunate that he didn’t find the net.

On another day, he could easily have had a couple.

Volta Redonda e Portuguesa-RJ fecharam a quarta rodada do Carioca com empate em 2 a 2, na noite desta segunda-feira, no estádio da Cidadania. Tiago Amaral marcou os gols do Volta Redonda, enquanto que Allan e Victor Hugo fizeram os gols da Lusa. Destaque para o goleiro da Portuguesa, Víctor Brasil, que fez grandes defesas.

Os vinte primeiros minutos foram de equilíbrio e de estudo. Volta Redonda e Portuguesa não tiveram lances de grande emoção, apenas jogadas concentradas no meio campo, e algumas subidas ao ataque pela esquerda da equipe da Cidade do Aço. Após a parada técnica, a Portuguesa melhorou ao adiantar sua marcação, acuando a equipe da casa em seu campo, os obrigando a jogar nos contra-ataques. E, em um desses, Tiago Amaral recebeu a bola e marcou, aos 38 minutos, para os donos da casa: Volta Redonda 1 a 0.

A etapa complementar começou quente. Aos dois minutos, Allan cobrou falta do lado esquerdo de ataque, já na intermediária. A bola pegou efeito e estufou a rede: 1 a 1. Depois do gol sofrido, o time da casa pressionou, aos 5 minutos, Dija Baiano chutou, Víctor Brasil rebateu e na sobra, novamente Dija Baiano chutou à queima roupa para uma grande defesa de Vítor Brasil. Um minuto depois, Bruno Barra cabeceou e novamente Víctor espalmou. Em seguida, em lance semelhante, agora com Tiago Amaral que cabeceou para outra defesa de Víctor.

Depois disso, a Portuguesa conseguiu reencontrar a marcação, equilibrou o jogo e a partida ficou lá e cá. Aos 29 minutos, Thiago Amaral aproveitou cruzamento na área e colocou o Voltaço em vantagem, marcando seu segundo gol no jogo: Volta Redonda 2 a 1. Não deu muito tempo para festejar, um minuto depois, Allan fez bela jogada pela esquerda, tocou para Victor Hugo que ficou cara a cara com o goleiro e não desperdiçou, empatando novamente a partida: 2 a 2.

O Volta Redonda quase fica novamente em vantagem no marcador. Niltinho arriscou de fora da área, Victor Brasil tocou na bola que explodiu na trave.
