Why Arsenal must not make the same mistakes with Oxlade-Chamberlain

Earlier this week, Arsenal’s long time pursuit of a much courted teenage Southampton winger came to an end when they paid a fee of around £12 million (dependant on which paper you read) to bring the youngster to The Emirates. It seems like we have been transported back in time to 2006 but we haven’t – it’s 2011 and the young flying winger is not Theo Walcott, but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The parallels between the two deals are uncanny, as no doubt you’ve already heard, but for many, the hope is that this is where the resemblance ends. You see Walcott’s career at Arsenal has been far from smooth so far. The flashes of brilliance and excitement he is so very capable of producing have so far been outweighed by a nasty inconsistency in his game that has seen him be unable to cement a guaranteed starting place. It doesn’t help that there seems to be confusion, even in Arsene Wenger, over what is his best natural position on the field. Is he the much vaunted winger that everybody once claimed he was – with his searing pace and body movement? It seems not as his crossing and final ball leaves a lot to be desired and has surely been noted as a weakness by Wenger. Is he a striker, or forward? He does seem to appear cool when in one-on-one situations, but his shooting often lacks bite and Wenger has doubts over whether he can lead the line. Another of Walcott’s major obstacles has been that many thought of him as the new Thierry Henry – which he quite clearly isn’t, yet (the Frenchman also has a slowish start to his career as an inconsistent but pacey winger, before Wenger’s masterstroke of transforming him into a front-man).

Maybe this added pressure and heightened expectation, all heaped on his young shoulders from the start, has effected what should have been a smooth transition to the big-time for Walcott. His surprising and controversial inclusion in England’s 2006 World Cup squad, before making his Premier League debut, did nothing but help serve the hype surrounding the youngster. Walcott’s career at Arsenal has also been hampered by injury, which has disrupted any rhythm and momentum, and whilst here is certainly no doubting his immense potential, after all the hype, one can’t help but feel underwhelmed thus far.

[ad_pod id=’unruly’ align=’right’]

Enter Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. As stated above the Southampton youth academy product instantly invited comparisons with Walcott coming from the south coast side, alongside his style of play which is all about pace and an ability to beat defenders. However that’s where the comparisons should end, especially if Arsenal and their fans are to avoid the mistakes made with Walcott. Oxlade-Chamberlain is equally adept with both feet and such ability has led him to play on either wing comfortably. He can also play centrally, though his incredible turn of pace saw him move outside in order to utilise this weapon fully. However he only turns 18 next week, and whilst he played a key role in securing Southampton’s promotion to the Championship, he has yet to play above League One level. With this in mind, maybe a future loan deal would be a sensible option for the teenager in order to gain some constant first team action as surely, he will only see limited playing time in this season’s Premier League – any of which will add un-needed extra pressure on the youngster. However the fee paid for Oxlade-Chamberlain brings instant pressure for his inclusion into the first team and probably rules out any loan deal – especially as Wenger has yet again chosen to spend the relatively large amount on an unfinished article, whilst it’s glaringly obvious there are more pressing needs in his squad.

In this sense Arsenal fans have found Oxlade-Chamberlain’s signing bitter-sweet in nature. On the one hand, they have again captured an immensely gifted youngster with massive potential, beating the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United to his signature. But on the other, it yet again seems like Wenger won’t spend money to purchase an experienced ‘finished article’ which is desperately needed if Arsenal are to challenge for honours right now – particularly in defensive and goalkeeping areas.

At least Oxlade-Chamberlain can use Walcott as a blueprint of the perils of heightened expectations, and talk to his new team-mate about his experience, whilst Theo had nobody. Also, Alex’s father, the ex-professional, will know all about the pitfalls awaiting any young player. He wanted his son to sign for Arsenal and felt certain his son was coming to the right place in order to progress the right way and aid his development. All at Arsenal will be hoping that Walcott’s experience will provide a smoother, more positive path for Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Ferguson talks up Chelsea challenge

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has stated that he feels rivals Chelsea will be in contention for the Premier League title come the end of the season.

The Stamford Bridge club finished the 2010-11 season in second place, nine points behind The Red Devils, but the Scottish manager feels the fight for top spot could be much closer this term.

“They have tremendous experience with the likes of Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Petr Cech, John Terry, Alex, Nicolas Anelka, Fernando Torres – there aren’t any young kids in that team,” Ferguson told Inside United.

Chelsea have received criticism that their team is ageing, but the United coach feels that this will benefit rather than hinder the London club.

“But they don’t have 36-or 37-year-olds like Ryan Giggs. Lampard and Drogba are 33, Anelka is 32 – not dissimilar to [Michael] Carrick and Rio Ferdinand, and we wouldn’t be saying they are dead and buried, would we? So why should they be? They’ll still be a big threat and we expect them to challenge,” he continued.

Chelsea have a new man in charge in the form of Andre Villas Boas, and although admitting that he doesn’t know too much about the new man in the Stamford Bridge hot seat, Fergie thinks the 33-year-old can succeed.

“He has a different set-up there to me, but I’m sure he’ll get plenty of advice from others and he’ll do fine. I don’t know much about him.

“He’s a young man and it’s a big step coming into the Premier League from the Portuguese championship, but given time and support anything is possible,” he concluded.

Manchester United and Chelsea meet later this month, with the pair going head-to-head at Old Trafford on September 18th.

Arsenal dismiss transfer talk

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has stated that he is unaware of any attempt to bring Joey Barton to the club, going against comments made by the midfielder earlier in the week.

The now QPR man claimed that if it had not been for his clash with Gervinho on the first day of the season whilst still playing for Newcastle, he may have moved to North London.

The altercation saw the Ivorian striker sent off on his debut, and left a sour taste in the mouth with Arsene Wenger’s men; despite this Hill-Wood is unaware of any interest in Barton.

“It’s not something the board heard about and if it was a serious proposition I certainly would have expected us to,” the executive told The Daily Star.

Barton hit back on social networking site Twitter, claiming he is happy to have moved to Loftus Road.

“Am not going to be drawn on PHW’s comments. He obviously needs to open a dialogue channel with Wenger, Pat Rice and Steve Rowley.

“I feel I made the right move for me, am very happy at QPR and wish Arsenal, the best of luck. Everything happens for a reason, I believe,” he stated.

Manchester City star talks up the title

Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany has admitted that his side are intent on winning the Premier League title this season, and that their resurgence is good for English football.

The Etihad Stadium outfit have been bolstered by the multi-millions of Sheik Mansour and the Belgium international feels this can only be good for the game in the country.

“I think Tottenham and ourselves doing well in the past few years has been great,” he told Mirror Football.

“Had it just been the same four sides challenging each season, it would have damaged the game here [in England].

“Now there are maybe six teams capable of winning the title – that can only be great for English football,” he stated.

City currently sit in second place in the standings, behind cross-town rivals Manchester United on goal difference, and Kompany feels Roberto Mancini’s side can end up at the summit this term.

“We finished equal-second last season, so there is only one spot to go for this year – and that’s to win the title. It’s a big challenge, but why not? There is pressure and expectation on us, but that’s what we want,” he concluded.

City host Aston Villa on Saturday, and with United travelling to Anfield will hope to move to the top of the table with three points.

Blackburn Rovers v Tottenham Hotspur – Match Preview

The focus will once again be on under pressure Blackburn boss Steve Kean as he welcomes Tottenham to Ewood Park looking who are eager to stretch their unbeaten run to six games.

Rovers are bottom of the table and have failed to win in their last three since beating Arsenal 4-3 last month and the pressure continues to rise with supporters planning more protests over Kean’s place in the dugout. The club are bottom of the table and looking clueless out on the field and were lucky to take a point away from Loftus Road in last week’s draw with QPR. Despite the dire performances the clubs owners have yet to act as they continue to stand by the man they appointed to replace Sam Allardyce 10 months ago. His summer signings have failed to add anything to the squad with much sought after striker David Goodwillie failing to score in the Premier League this season. Kean fought tooth and nail to sign him from Dundee United but he has get to even have a shot on target in six appearances. At the other end the defence is far from watertight despite the presence of Christopher Samba and Ryan Nelsen. Paul Robinson has seen the goals fly in seeing the ball hit his net 18 times already this season which isn’t a surprise considering Rovers haven’t kept a clean sheet since April. They’ve only beaten Spurs twice in their last 15 meetings so it would be surprising if the vociferous protests against Kean are silenced with a victory.

Harry Redknapp’s side should come out of this fixture unscathed and with a fifth win from their last six games. That run of form earned the Spurs boss Septembers manager of the month award . They had won four on the trot prior to last week’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle at St James’ Park and were only pegged back by a late Shola Ameobi goal. Spurs have been lethal in front of goal during their unbeaten run scoring 12 times with Rafael van der Vaart scoring their opening goal in the last three fixtures. The Dutchman has a rather impressive strike rate hitting the net every 166 minutes in the league and he will be the man Spurs will look to get them off and running at Ewood Park. His link up with Emmanuel Adebayor up front may be broken up though with Jermain Defoe pushing for a start after he came off the bench to score their second goal against Newcastle. That could mean Jake Livermore drops out and Van Der Vaart is stuck out wide. Defoe has been in good goalscoring form in the current campaign hitting five goals this season and forming a devastating understanding with Adebayor. The omens are good for Spurs going into this fixture having done the double over Rovers last season.

Key Players

Christopher Samba – A towering presence the Rovers rearguard he will be key to shutting out Adebayor, Defoe and/or Van Der Vaart. The skipper scored the equaliser at QPR last week but will need to be at his defensive best against a Spurs side who have been scoring goals for fun in recent weeks.

Luka Modric – Despite being unable to exert his influence last week at Newcastle the Croatian is the creative hub of Tottenham’s midfield. His movement and link-up play should be too much for Blackburn to handle and don’t be surprised if he ends up getting on the scoresheet on Sunday.

 Prediction: 1-3

Christopher Samba scored the Rovers’ only goal of the game. The 6 foot 4 inch defender has contributed 16 clearances and 7 interception Blackburn striker David Hoilett is their top ranked player in 99th place and the young Canadian averaged a speed of 5.49mph Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor may fancy his chance at adding to his three goals so far this season against the league’s second most costly defence. Adebayor’s goals have come from 14 attempts at goal and 71% on target. The striker has also been helping out team mates, averaging a pass in his opponent’s half every 4 minutes 35 seconds. Fellow Spurs striker Jermain Defoe scored his third goal of the season, and has been due a goal having has 17 attempts on target so far this season, the third highest in the league

Ferdinand gives statement to FA

QPR defender Anton Ferdinand has revealed that he has completed his statement to the FA regarding the alleged incident of racism committed by John Terry just over a week ago.

The Chelsea defender was accused by the Loftus Road man of insulting him due to his race in the 1-0 victory for Rangers on 23rd October, and many involved in the game have been calling for action against the England international.

Despite maintaining his innocence, Terry is under investigation by the FA currently, and Ferdinand has confirmed that he has given evidence against the veteran central defender.

“Today (Monday 31st October 2011) I finalised my statement with the Football Association with regards to the incident that occurred last Sunday at Loftus Road in our Barclays Premier League fixture against Chelsea,” read Ferdinand’s statement.

“I have very strong feelings on the matter, but in the interests of fairness and not wishing to prejudice what I am sure will be a very thorough inquiry by the FA, this will be my last comment on the subject until the enquiry is concluded.

“I would like to thank the club, Tony Fernandes, Amit Bhatia, Neil Warnock, the supporters and my fellow professionals for their unwavering support,” he concluded.

The FA will review Ferdinand’s story of events, and Terry can expect to be questioned over the incident in the not too distant future.

Potentially a £20m coup by Liverpool this January?

As the January transfer window approaches, the media rumour mill is starting to warm up again with reports of possible upcoming big-money moves. As usual, Liverpool are likely to be linked to a whole host of names, and have already been rumoured to be targeting Aly Cissokho, Philippe Coutinho and Seydou Keita.

Another player Kenny Dalglish is said to be interested in is Sao Paulo ’s Brazilian midfielder Lucas , full name Lucas Rodrigues Moura da Silva. According to reports, the Reds are prepared to offer £20 million for the 19-year-old, who is also a target for Manchester United , Real Madrid and AC Milan .

But is he worth the money? Club owners Fenway Sports Group have already shown they are willing to splash out big funds on youngsters with potential, bringing in the likes of Andy Carroll and Jordan Henderson for considerable amounts. And the case for signing Lucas is strengthened by the fact that he has arguably shown much more potential than either of those two.

Having made his professional debut for Sao Paulo just last year, Lucas has since gone on to become a key player for the side. He made 25 appearances in the Brazilian Championship, the Campeonato Brasileiro, last season, and has again been a regular during this campaign, scoring eight goals in the process.

He was also a part of the Brazil Under-20 side which won the South American Youth Championship in Peru earlier this year, where he scored four goals in nine appearances. These impressive displays saw him earn a call up to the senior side, and he made his debut against Scotland in March.

Reds star arrested on assault charges

Liverpool winger Stewart Downing has reportedly been arrested for assaulting an ex-girlfriend in a nightclub in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The England international was spotted on a night out in Yarm, near Middlesbrough on Saturday night, and was allegedly involved in a fracas at around 1am on Sunday morning.

Reports in The Daily Mail indicate that he hit his former partner in an argument in the Cross Keys club, and was later picked up by police.

Local authorities have confirmed that an arrest has been made, but would not release the name of the man in question.

“Police were called to an incident at a pub on Yarm High Street,” an official police statement reads.

“A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and a 32-year-old woman has also been arrested on suspicion of assault.

“Both are in custody and inquiries are ongoing,” it concluded.

The scandal is the last thing that the Anfield club need after the recent controversy over Luis Suarez and new racism claims in the Merseysiders 5-1 win over Oldham in the FA Cup on Friday night.

Downing has struggled to make an impact at Kenny Dalglish’s side since an £18 million move from Aston Villa in the summer.

Redknapp blast as trial continues

Harry Redknapp’s trial over tax evasion charges continued on Thursday, with the Tottenham boss stating that he was insulted by claims that he was lying.

The Spurs coach is under investigation amid claims that he opened a foreign bank account to hide bribes from British tax authorities during his time as manager of Portsmouth.

Despite evidence piling up against Redknapp and former chairman Milan Mandaric, the tactician has continued to plead his innocence to prosecutor John Black QC.

“You think I’ve put my hand on the bible and told lies? That’s an insult, Mr Black, that’s an insult,” he said according to The Guardian.

“Everything I’ve told you has been the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God.

“Bring the bible up here again and I will put my hand on it. I’m the most ungreedy person you have met in your whole life, Mr Black. Ever. Ever,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, The Daily Mail state that Redknapp’s trial is set to roll into next week, and the manager is in danger of missing his team’s game against Liverpool on Monday night.

Redknapp is believed to be ready to board a plane straight after the court proceedings to make it to Anfield in time for kick off.
