Bull: Wolves shouldn’t sign transfer target Goncalo Guedes

Steve Bull doesn’t think Wolves need to add wingers this summer, amid reports linking them with Valencia’s Goncalo Guedes.

Wolves have been offered the Portuguese attacker, who said he idolises international teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, but already have a strong contingent in the wide areas.

However, with Pedro Neto out with a long-term knee problem, and Adama Traore’s future currently up in the air, the Midlands outfit could be left short.

Meanwhile, another of their attackers, Willian Jose, is likely to return to Real Sociedad following his struggling loan spell, whilst Raul Jimenez is going to need time before he’s back to his best after his head injury.

Guedes, who’s been with Valencia for four seasons, one of which was a one-year loan, can play anywhere across the front three, but has only managed 21 goals in his time in Spain, with his best La Liga return only five.

This season, he contributed 14 goals in 34 appearances in all competitions, including two against Europa League winners Villarreal, and is valued at £22.50m by Transfermarkt, which is considerably less than what Valencia paid PSG back in 2018.

But Bull exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that Wolves should be looking elsewhere:

“We’ve got the wingers – two each side, so I don’t think so. He would be a good asset to the side, but he might not get games.

“We need to strengthen in most areas apart from wingers because when Neto comes back, Podence comes back, we keep Traore, fingers crossed, we have enough options.”

Kumble's sore shoulder, India's misery

So, it’s official at last

Sankhya Krishnan16-Jan-2001So, it’s official at last. Anil Kumble is out of the game for the nextfour months. BCCI secretary Jaywant Lele has announced that Kumble will beoperated on by South African orthopaedic surgeon Mark Fergusson inJohannesburg on Wednesday. The 30-year-old leg spinner has been rendered hors de combat since the opening game of the Coca Cola Champions Trophy in Sharjah against Sri Lanka on October 20.In that game, he aggravated a right shoulder injury, caused by a fall several months earlier, which had not been allowed to heal due to constant activity. With the symptoms of pain and stiffness felt during bowling and throwing not subsiding, Kumble flew to South Africa last week for consultation with Fergusson, the surgeon who treated Javagal Srinath and Ajit Agarkar, also forshoulder problems.Indian coach John Wright, who returned to India on Sunday, reacted with disappointment to the news in Mumbai. The news is a huge setback to India’s chances against Australia in the three match Test series which takes off on February 27. To put India’s dependence on Kumble in perspective, one just has to recall the last Australian visit to India exactly three years ago. India won 2-1 and who was their matchwinner? If you thought Sachin Tendulkar, thinkagain. It takes twenty opposition wickets to win a Test match. On thattour Kumble took 23 at 18.26 in three Tests while seven other bowlersput together took 27. Amidst the carnage wreaked by Tendulkar and Co.,perhaps the most defining contribution was Kumble’s.So where does that leave the Indians? Right behind the eight ball, onewould imagine. There is hardly any other spinner in the land whoinspires a fraction of the confidence Kumble does. The options beforethe selectors are limited. Left armers Sunil Joshi and Murali Kartikand off spinner Sharandeep Singh were the three slow bowlers tried outin the three Tests this season. Sharandeep took six wickets on debutin Nagpur without really looking special but both Joshi and Kartikwere disappointments.Among the slow bowlers seen in action this domestic season, HarbhajanSingh and Sairaj Bahutule have perhaps had the best of the exchanges. The 20-year-old Harbhajan, who has played eight Tests, took a bagfulof wickets in Punjab’s triumphant march in the Ranji Trophy. Havingbeen dumped from the National Cricket Academy for disciplinary reasonslast June, it is unclear if he has returned into the good books of theBoard.Leg spinner Bahutule, who played seven one-dayers for India in1997-98, missed most of last season through injury but has been in themidst of a satisfying run with Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy zonalleague. Whether he is still too early on the comeback trail isdebatable. By the time the Aussies arrive, he should have had thebenefit of a full complement of games in the Duleep Trophy. His fellowleg spinner WD Balaji Rao has also been reasonably successful forTamil Nadu but suffers the disadvantage of not being in the Duleepsquad. And then, 19-year-old Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan has been getting underthe skin of the visiting English colts, but again Test cricket mightbe too great a gap for him to bridge, especially with limited firstclass experience. There is also the option of veteran left armerVenkatapathy Raju who was Kumble’s spin twin the last time the Aussiescame visiting. He did not enjoy the greatest of series, scalping 7wickets at 42.42. But he bowled at a niggardly rate right through andkept things tight for Kumble at the other end, which may have played asignificant part in the latter’s own success. The Duleep Trophy, currently underway and which will continue tillFebruary 4, is a ready reckoner of the current depth of talent, orlack of it. Besides the national selectors, coach John Wright is setto watch some of the matches, beginning with the West-South clash inSurat from January 18. But as always, the kind of wickets that havebeen laid out in the competition have been way too discouraging forthe bowlers, and especially the slower ones, so the lessons learnt maybe few.

Liverpool-linked Saul Niguez set for Bayern

Liverpool have suffered a major blow in their pursuit of Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez.

What’s the story?

According to Spanish outlet Marca (as reported by The Mirror), Bayern Munich have won the race to secure the 26-year-old’s signature this summer, agreeing a fee in the region of £68m.

The report states that Atleti are confident that a deal taking Saul to the Bundesliga champions can be completed soon, handing Jurgen Klopp a huge setback in his summer transfer plans.

Klopp will be gutted

With Gini Wijnaldum expected to depart Anfield in the coming days, signing a top-quality replacement for the Dutch international is thought to be high up on Liverpool’s wish lift.

The 30-year-old has enjoyed an incredibly successful five-year stint with the Reds, making 237 appearances, winning the Premier League title and the Champions League in the process. His departure will leave a significant gap in Klopp’s midfield, and the Liverpool manager will surely be gutted to miss out on one of his top targets.

Saul has been linked with a move to the Premier League for many years, with former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand signing the Spain international’s praises 12 months ago.

“What a player. I’ve been harping on about Saul Niguez for a few years now. I think he’s a major player. Composed, calm, great left foot, lovely conductor, he can score goals, tactically he’s very aware,” the 42-year-old said during an Instagram Live video (as reported by Sports Mole).

Ferdinand added: “You can see (Diego) Simeone, he gets his teams really well set up, and he’s in the middle orchestrating and dictating things.”

However, it seems as though Bayern have beaten off significant competition to secure the dynamic midfielder’s services.

The German giants are looking to bolster their ranks ahead of Julian Naglesmann’s maiden campaign in charge at the Allianz Arena, and the addition of Saul to the Bundesliga champions’ engine room will be a fantastic first signing for the young coach.

Manicaland look close to victory against CFX Academy

Day 2 close of play: CFX Academy 222 and 117/8 (Soma 16*, Chari 0*); Manicaland250

John Ward24-Mar-2001Day 2 close of play: CFX Academy 222 and 117/8 (Soma 16*, Chari 0*); Manicaland250.Accurate Manicaland bowling tilted the match against the CFX Academy by the close of the second day. After taking a first innings lead of 28, their bowlers seized the initiative by working steadily through a rather submissive batting order, and they should be left with not too difficult a target on the third morning.Patrick Gada and Gary Brent continued to build steadily on Manicaland’sovernight score of 122 for four, in reply to CFX Academy’s total of 222.Gada, 67 overnight and with a century obviously preying on his mind, wasfortunate to survive an easy chance to mid-off when on 71. He did not livelong to enjoy it, being caught at silly point a few minutes later withoutadding to his score; his four runs of the day took more than 40 minutes.Brent played a positive innings of 61 before being surprised andcontroversially given run out by a fine throw from Guy Croxford whenattempting a run off a push by his partner to mid on. He did not receivemuch help from the later batsmen, though, until a determined ninth-wicketpartnership between Andre Soma and Terry Denyer took Manicaland into thelead. After lunch the promising 17-year-old Soma opened his shoulders to goodeffect, but Academy brother Leon broke the annoying stand by bowling Denyerwith a low full toss for 12 and then finishing the innings by having hisbrother caught at mid-on for 22. Manicaland were all out for 250, a lead of28.The Academy second innings never looked confident. Under heavy skies, thebatsmen seemed to find trouble in getting the ball away and wickets fellsteadily against determined and accurate Manicaland seam bowling. GuyCroxford was the only batsman who looked capable of carrying the attack backto the bowlers, but by tea the Academy had lost four wickets and were only20 runs ahead. After the break the batsmen again got bogged down and Croxford added onlythree runs in 25 minutes before being caught off an uppish cut. For afurther hour it seemed as if the team was to subside slowly without spirit, but then Blessing Mahwire discovered that it was possible after all to scoreruns against these bowlers.A good partnership was developing between Mahwire and Leon Soma before they inexplicably seemed to go into their shells again, only for Mahwire (29) to be dismissed lbw just before the close after a 35-run partnership.Unless rain intervenes – which so far it has not – the Academy will have abig task in their attempt to snatch an unlikely victory on the finalmorning.
