Manager turned pundit Alex McLeish is gutted for Leeds United defender Diego Llorente, who is set to miss out on Euro 2020.

Following a fine first season back in the Premier League for Leeds United, the Spaniard was selected ahead of Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos for Spain’s upcoming EURO 2020 Championship squad [Yorkshire Post].

An important squad player for the Whites, Llorente made a total of 15 appearances for the Elland Road side in 2020/21 and was scheduled to be a key player in the summer tournament [Transfermarkt].

The Latest: Leeds man tests positive

Reported on Wednesday afternoon, Llorente became the second Spanish player within their camp to test positive for Covid-19 after Sergio Busquets last week [Sky Sports].

Set to miss a portion of the tournament through mandatory isolation, McLeish was quick to offer his condolences to Llorente following the news, stating:

“To miss out on something like the European Championships, then it’s part of your life that is gone.

“Obviously he’s got time on his side and he can make it up.

The Verdict: Hopefully Llorente can swiftly make a full recovery

Undoubtedly, it is hard not to share the disappointment the 62-year-old pundit feels for the ball-playing centre-back. On the verge of competing at the highest level, it is a shame he will not take part in his nation’s quest for tournament glory.

Making around 2.3 tackles on average per game this season, the 27-year-old would’ve added some solidity to the Spain rear-guard in their early tournament fixtures [WhoScored], and perhaps could have found some confidence and form to take into the next campaign in Yorkshire.

As for his manager Marcelo Bielsa, he will hope that the 6 foot 1 ace is able to bounce back in a fit and healthy state as the Whites look to hit the ground running in 2021/22.

أعلن مجلس إدارة النادي الأهلي، برئاسة محمود الخطيب، تعيين خالد العوضي مديرًا للنشاط الرياضي خلفًا للكابتن رؤوف عبد القادر.

ووفقًا للموقع الرسمي فإن مجلس إدارة النادي الأهلي، عقد اجتماعًا مساء اليوم الجمعة في فرع النادي بمدينة نصر، استكمالًا للجلسة التي أقيمت يوم الإثنين الماضي، وذلك لمناقشة العديد من الملفات المهمة التي تخص قطاعات النادي المختلفة.

وعقب الجلسة قرر المجلس برئاسة الخطيب تعيين اخالد العوضي مديرًا للنشاط الرياضي خلفًا لرؤوف عبد القادر.

ويعد العوضي واحدًا من أبناء أسرة الأهلي لكرة اليد، ويمتلك الكثير من الخبرات الرياضية والإدارية، حيث سبق وتولى منصب نائب مدير النشاط الرياضي في فرع النادي بمدينة نصر، كما تقلد العديد من المناصب الإدارية في اتحاد كرة اليد.

وتم الاتفاق على عقد اجتماع تنسيقي غدًا السبت برئاسة المدير التنفيذي ويضم كل من: الكابتن رؤوف عبد القادر والكابتن خالد العوضي والمدير المالي، لإتمام إجراءات التسليم والتسلم.

وكان فريق كرة اليد بالنادي الأهلي قد خسر لقب الدوري بالأمس بعد هزيمته من الزمالك.

وخسر فريق الكرة الطائرة من الزمالك بنتيجة 3-2 في المباراة الحاسمة التي أقيمت اليوم في نصف نهائي الدوري.

انتهت مساء الإثنين منافسات الجولة الثلاثين من الدوري الإسباني بفوز ريال سوسيداد على إسبانيول بهدف نظيف.

وشهدت الجولة فوز برشلونة الثمين على إشبيلية بهدف دون رد، وتخطى ريال مدريد نظيره سيلتا فيجو بهدفين لهدف.

Rogério Ceni saiu satisfeito de sua primeira partida como técnico do São Paulo. Claro que a vaga na final da Florida Cup após vitória nos pênaltis sobre o River Plate (ARG) colaborou para o sorriso do Mito após a partida no estádio Al Lang, em St. Petersbourgh, mas a principal razão para o ânimo foi o desempenho da equipe durante o primeiro tempo.

– Eu falei para eles no intervalo que fiquei muito feliz com o primeiro tempo. Perdemos um pênalti e criamos pelo menos dez oportunidades contra uma equipe de primeira linha. Com 15 sessões de treinos com bola, conseguimos apresentar um futebol de bom nível contra uma equipe grande da Argentina. Eles mostraram desejo de atacar, de apertar a marcação e recuperar a bola. Tenho certeza de que cada um dos 24 jogadores usados deu seu máximo – exaltou o novato treinador, que completou:

– O rendimento do time no primeiro tempo foi muito bom. É um parâmetro muito importante para nós, Michael, Pintado, todo pessoal de apoio que se entregou para montar os campos e dar velocidade aos jogadores. É um retorno positivo o que eles fizeram, com postura profissional, sem problemas disciplinares em 16 dias aqui, sem atraso, treinando com vontade e avisando quando cansava.

– Expectativa é sempre grande porque é um clássico nacional. São Paulo e Corinthians é sempre um jogo que reverbera mais, ainda mais valendo título. Mesmo em pré-temporada, fora do país e que não muda o futuro, tem essa rivalidade, mas é preciso ser sadia. Esse período mais curto, de só 48 horas para descansar contra 72 horas do Corinthians (jogou na quarta-feira contra o Vasco da Gama) pode fazer falta – lamentou.

Por que o time caiu no segundo tempo?
Fico muito contente pelo que foi apresentado. Neilton ficou com algumas dúvidas, sem conseguir se posicionar para atacar e defender, então coloquei o Shaylon pela direita e o Wesley na esquerda para marcar mais, mesmo que não atacasse. Tivemos que nos segurar para manter o placar.

Surpreendeu a postura dos garotos que estrearam, como Araruna, Foguete, Júnior e Shaylon?
Fiquei 15 dias vendo treinos todos os dias, vendo jogos e queria ter trazido mais garotos do sub-20, mas não teria como dar atenção a todos eles e poderia perder a união do grupo. Quando ele cresce demais, ele perde unidade e eu não conseguiria dar trabalhos específicos para todos. Claro que tem lesão, que um elenco curto pode atrapalhar, mas a atenção hoje é igual ao Lugano, com 36 anos, e Shaylon, com 19.

Ficou mais calado ou procurou orientar mais o time durante o jogo e as cobranças de pênalti?
Pênalti eu já me preocupei muito quando batia, sei como é. Não é só porque perdeu o pênalti que você muda o jeito de jogar. Isso foi o legal. Perdemos no início e mantivemos o ritmo de jogo. A orientação faz parte pelo que vimos o River de uma forma no primeiro jogo e hoje de outra, então precisamos de ajustes. Baseamos nosso jogo em nosso sistema, não no do adversário.

The fixtures haven’t even been released, but Dean Windass has already ruled his former side Sheffield United out of getting promoted straight back to the Premier League next year.

Having failed to build off their outstanding first campaign back in the top-flight in 2019-2020, the Blades were relegated last term having sat at the foot of the table from November onwards.

“It pains me to say it, but I can’t see them going back up next year, depending how many players you do lose.

“He did fantastically well at Fulham and were probably the best team in the Championship, but I can’t see Sheffield United bouncing back straight away.”

Aston Villa owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris are set to back a move for Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Villa haven’t wasted any time this summer

Villa have already brought in Emiliano Buendia from Norwich City in a club-record deal, and it now appears as if their next big-money move could be one for Ward-Prowse.

Another man who is set for talks with Villa is Ashley Young, whereas the club were reportedly in discussions with striker Josh King earlier this month.

The Latest: Ward-Prowse update

A Villa source informed Football Insider that both Edens and Sawiris are keen for a deal to be completed in time for the midfielder to be at the club’s Bodymoor Heath training ground for the start of pre-season.

Dean Smith’s side are set to return for pre-season on July 5, which is in 19 days time. The Villa hierarchy want the central midfielder through the door by then to bed the free-kick specialist into Smith’s system.

A move for Ward-Prowse will take a huge fee, the report adds, and a push for a deal to be wrapped up as soon as possible was aided following his omission from England’s European Championship squad this summer.

The Verdict: A major coup if a deal goes through

Should Villa seal a deal for Ward-Prowse, it would only add to their ambition to establish themselves as an elite Premier League side.

Villa fans found out first hand how effective the 26-year-old can be last season when he scored twice and registered an assist in a 4-3 win for the Saints at Villa Park.

He appears to be in the prime of his career and has also racked up 269 appearances in the Premier League, and a move for the Saints captain may also help persuade Jack Grealish to remain at the club beyond the summer, amid links to Manchester City.
