Auckland looking to reverse first round result against ND

Top-of-the table Auckland have the chance to reverse their away result against Northern Districts when the neighbours meet at Eden Park in the sixth round of the State Championship starting tomorrow

Chris Rosie17-Feb-2002Top-of-the table Auckland have the chance to reverse their away result against Northern Districts when the neighbours meet at Eden Park in the sixth round of the State Championship starting tomorrow.Northern, who start this match in fourth place with 14 points, produced a five-wicket victory in the fourth round clash between the two teams in Hamilton after Christmas. They would prefer to have that in mind rather than the one-wicket loss they suffered to Wellington after allowing the southern visitors back into the match in the last round of the competition.Auckland, on 19 points, come into this match after an innings defeat of Canterbury that confirmed them as a better four-day than one-day side. The match will take place on the Outer Oval where fine weather over the past five days will at least guarantee a much faster outfield than Auckland and Canterbury had to contend with on the main ground last week. The weather should also ensure that the two teams start on a harder surface than the drop-in pitch provided last week after preparations were affected by days of rain.Northern Districts will bring north the same 12 who line up in the match against Wellington: James Marshall, Matthew Hart, Michael Parlane, Scott Styris, Hamish Marshall, Grant Bradburn, Robbie Hart, Joseph Yovich, Simon Doull, Bruce Martin, Graeme Aldridge and Simon Andrews.Injury sustained during the Canterbury match has forced the withdrawal of the young pace bowler Gareth Shaw from the Auckland line-up. With concern also over the fitness of Tama Canning, two bowlers, regular squad member Richard Morgan and a new addition, the medium pacer Sanjeewa Silva, have been brought in as cover with a decision to be made on the morning of the match. The Auckland 13 are: Mark Richardson, Matt Horne, Tim McIntosh, Llorne Howell, Aaron Barnes, Nick Horsley, Rob Nicol, Brooke Walker, Tama Canning, Reece Young, Chris Drum, Richard Morgan and Sanjeewa Silva.

Spurs: Ernesto Valverde a new contender

An intriguing new name has emerged in Tottenham Hotspur’s managerial search this weekend…

What’s the word?

According to Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, former Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde has been “approached” by Spurs following their collapsed moves for Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso.

He tweeted:

“Tottenham board back in contact with many candidates after Gattuso talks collapsed.

“Ernesto Valverde new name approached – not advanced yet. Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag always been appreciated, both are in the list – but ‘complicated’.

“Crazy but… race still open.”

Exciting new name

Of course, the North Londoners have been here plenty of times already in the two months since Jose Mourinho was sacked, so this sort of news has to be approached with caution.

The names that have come and gone in that time have been endless, ranging from Julian Naglesmann and Brendan Rodgers to Antonio Conte and even Mauricio Pochettino.

But Valverde is closer to that quartet than either of the aforementioned former Serie A coaches that have come close to being appointed.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-latest-spurs-news-transfer-gossip-rumours-manager-update-fonseca-paratici-levy” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, manager gossip, transfer rumours, injury updates and more!”]

The 57-year-old was quite a success at La Liga giants Barcelona, where he won two league titles, a Copa del Rey and a Supercopa, finishing his tenure with a 66.8% win rate, too.

You only have to look at the Catalan side since his departure to know just how good he was. They are yet to win La Liga since and haven’t got past the Champions League quarter-finals either.

In fact, the Spaniard left the Nou Camp possessing the fifth-best ever record in charge, behind the likes of Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique, as per Opta.

Valverde would certainly be a more exciting appointment than most of the candidates remaining and it seems like that’s a viewpoint already shared by many in N17.

“Would be a really good choice,” claimed one supporter. Another suggested that he is a “top coach” and that he’d take him at Spurs “all day long,” whilst a further member of the Lilywhites faithful believes he would “steady the ship” by playing “good football.”

It may be a small sample size but it’s a fair assessment of the general consensus right now.

Perhaps this is one final hope in what has been an absolute circus in North London.

AND in other news, Paratici could finally axe Lamela with Spurs swoop for “magical” £26m-rated “prodigy”…

'One more shot' says Cairns as he awaits surgery

Chris Cairns hasn’t been frustrated out of cricket yet by his run of injuries and said his over-riding emotion after his latest knee problems was to give it ‘one more shot’

Lynn McConnell28-Mar-2002Chris Cairns hasn’t been frustrated out of cricket yet by his run of injuries and said his over-riding emotion after his latest knee problems was to give it ‘one more shot’.Cairns will undergo surgery again next week and be out of action for the remainder of the winter with extensive rehabilitation before he will be fit to play again. His hope is that he will be able to use the home series against India next Christmas-New Year as a less strenuous comeback that he had in Australia this summer.Cairns said playing at home in a less rigorous campaign would be a much easier way to prepare himself for next year’s World Cup, and for continued cricket for a season or two after that.Cairns was offered a period of rest and rehabilitation, or surgery, and he opted for surgery because over the longer term that was less of a risk than undergoing the rest option with the chance of breaking down again.”Should the injury recur I would face surgery at that time,” he said.”That could mean leaving Nottinghamshire in the lurch mid-season and could also mean that I would not be recovered in time to play for New Zealand against India or to play in the World Cup.”For both of these reasons I felt the best option was to deal with the injury immediately,” he said. His option with Notts is a two-year one and discussions were underway for the second year of the deal with his coming through the World Cup campaign without injury concerns being a central part of the discussions.”I would love to be able to be involved for a few more years.”It would have been tempting to have gone economically. With the weakness of the New Zealand dollar, for all New Zealand sportsmen and women it is very attractive to go overseas and play,” he saidEven business people looked to go overseas to maximise their earning potential, he said.Cairns also clarified the situation with his original contract with Notts. He said his contract ran out with New Zealand Cricket at the end of April and he was a free agent and that was why he looked at the Notts option.”To go there, play two months, get injured and let Notts down would have been very unprofessional, but more importantly I would have missed out on the chance to play in the World Cup,” he said.”I’m not ruling out having another operation [should something happen in the future] but it is the rehab that is the hardest thing to do. I’ll be 32 this year and I would like to think I could give New Zealand cricket a few more years yet.”I love the game too much. I love being involved with New Zealand Cricket. I love playing, I love being involved with this team and that’s why I want to try and give it one last crack, to try and get it right. If I do that it could give me three years.”If it doesn’t go right, which we also calculated, I feel I can get through one more season and play the World Cup and then maybe look at things after that.”The temptation to keep playing at this stage is too strong,” he said.It was frustrating sitting back and being one of several players dogged by injuries because over the last four years a very competitive side had been brought together. He most felt for the effect that had on New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming. While it was hard on the young players coming into the team with the responsibility of trying to perform like the more experienced players it was tough that they had no senior players in the side to learn from.It was something he had experienced when coming into the New Zealand team.”I went through a lot of my career like that as well when a lot of senior guys finished and we had a similar scenario, especially with our batters and it is disappointing that we don’t have a senior bowler to guide our young guys at the moment.”It is very tough for Flem,” Cairns said.He said he knew the moment his injury happened that something serious had occurred and said despite that he bowled in the second innings because he had got a duck, and he felt New Zealand was still in the game.”I wanted to contribute. A lot of the advice was left in my hands and I just felt that if I had got a couple of wickets and we were still in the game very much I could have said, ‘OK that is all I can do’.”The next day he said the issue was dealt with less emotionally and he made the more calculated decision not to bowl.Injuries were a factor at any stage of a career and while he hadn’t been as lucky as some he was not totally down about his misfortune.”That’s part of sport. It’s about being resilient, about being strong and dealing with all sorts of things. And this is just another thing that has occurred in my career. I’m going to try and beat it and I am determined to do that.”He said that while the injury was a downside in his professional life, with the birth of his first child later in the year it was going to be very exciting in his personal life.

A importância é sempre o São Paulo.

New Zealand in the hunt for a competitive edge

New Zealand’s players may be struggling to come to grips with Pakistan in their one-day and Test tour at the moment, but the boffins back at HQ in Christchurch are researching a strategy for next summer’s World Cup campaign

Lynn McConnell22-Apr-2002New Zealand’s players may be struggling to come to grips with Pakistan in their one-day and Test tour at the moment, but the boffins back at HQ in Christchurch are researching a strategy for next summer’s World Cup campaign.Normally at this time of year cricket administrators are busy doing the paperwork to make sure they can present their annual reports in the best possible light. But at New Zealand Cricket the planning is underway for the World Cup.An initial planning meeting, involving senior players, team management, High Performance Centre staff and head office, has been held and a 12-month programme instituted.NZC operations manager John Reid said the main task of the group was finding a competitive edge, something that New Zealand with its resources can exploit.”When teams have won the World Cup they have done something different,” Reid said.New Zealand had employed the strategy of opening the bowling with off-spinner Dipak Patel during the 1992 World Cup, and while the team hadn’t won, it caught other sides napping with the ploy and reached the semi-finals.The Sri Lankans in 1996 had further developed the 1992 batting style of Mark Greatbatch and Rod Latham of blasting during the first 15 overs. But in English conditions strategies had to be different in 1999 because the Sri Lankan approach involved taking too many risks early on against the moving ball used in England.”What’s the next step the game is going to? We don’t know what that is yet, but we are investigating options.”To beat the superpowers of cricket we have to do something different,” he said.Thinking had already started and there was some experimentation being done in Sharjah and Pakistan on batting orders within the limits set by the personnel available.Statistical analysis and different patterns of play from which the TelstraClear Black Caps will be able to institute a game plan are being studied. A group of players capable of playing that game will be identified.A loose squad of about 30 players have been identified in order for the strategy to be able to try and cover several bases.Reid said it was clear that Nos 12-14 in the squad were going to be just as important selections as the on-field 11 for this tournament. However, there still had to be provision in the selection process should a bolter appear in the way that Shane Bond and Andre Adams emerged this year.Once having settled on a plan, it would be necessary to increase specific skills among players to cope with what was being attempted. As an example, Reid said it was clear from experience this summer, in both Australia and South Africa, that the South Africans have players in Mark Boucher and Lance Klusener batting at Nos 7 and 8 who are capable of hitting the ball over the fence. If having that as part of the strategy, New Zealand would need to prepare players to do likewise.People in different areas of the strategy would need different skills and planning, provided budgetary support was given, would involve taking players to overseas camps, probably in Australia, to do skill development work during the winter. All series being played by the side during the remainder of the year, against Pakistan, the West Indies, the ICC Champions Trophy tournament and the home series against India would all be played within the broad plan for the World Cup.This was, of course, while still trying to win matches, Reid said.As the year progressed elements of the plan would be tried within several games and Reid said he imagined the strategy would start to become reasonably clear to the cricket public by the time the side leaves to go to South Africa. The national administration would also be looking to get the support of the associations in mapping out a domestic draw that is complementary to the needs of the Black Caps.”We hope to have that resolved by June,” he said.”It comes down to how we use the intervening cricket before next year. All these games at the moment are opportunities to get it right.”Reid said that cricket was a very traditional game and was less innovative than it should be. New Zealanders were leaders in innovation in other spheres of life and could be in cricket.”One of the advantages in being small is that we have to communicate.”The disadvantages are the lack of people and money to do things.”But if we simply copy, we will fail.”We have to be smarter, better and more innovative to succeed. Unless we do something like that we probably won’t ever win the World Cup,” Reid said.An important step along the way had been the victory in the last ICC KnockOut tournament because it had given players self-belief and confidence that they could compete, and that would be important next year.Other countries would also be looking at how they could be in the best position to take the Cup, and many of them had a greater player depth which meant those players could afford to play by instinct.New Zealand had to do a lot more with its resources to ensure the players could compete.
