Celtic make Brandon Soppy bid

Ange Postecoglou has a 100% record during Celtic’s pre-season but it’s now vitally important that he continues to make an impression in the transfer market.

What’s the word?

It’s just eight days until the Hoops embark on their European qualifying campaign and they only have two new young players to show for their efforts in the transfer market.

The relatively inexperienced Osaze Urhoghide and Liam Shaw have both arrived from the same club but that isn’t enough if the Bhoys want to reach the group stages of the Champions League.

One player they appear to be targeting in a right-back position is Brandon Soppy.

The Rennes teenager caught the eye in France last term and is now viewed as a genuine target for Celtic. Fabrizio Romano first revealed their interest over the weekend before an update emerged from journalist Ekrem Konur.

He said on Twitter: “Celtic have offered Rennes £3m for Brandon Soppy. Brandon has a lot of offers. Rennes are continuing contract extension talks with Brandon.”

Fans must be elated

At long last, Celtic look as though they’re going to bring in a new full-back.

After the tiresome events of last season, this was one of the most important areas the club needed to strengthen in.

Jeremie Frimpong left in January and they moved swiftly to replace him with Jonjoe Kenny.

The Englishman arrived on a temporary basis but he was nothing short of a liability in defensive situations.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-news-doig-nketiah-mccann” title= “Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

Kenny disappointed in each Old Firm derby he played in, making a succession of errors.

His shoddy back pass led to an Alfredo Morelos goal from a corner on his Old Firm induction and then put the ball into the back of his own net against Rangers a month later.

With that in mind, the Celtic hierarchy were never going to bring him back for a permanent spell.

Unfortunately, that left Anthony Ralston and Lee O’Connor as the only viable options at right-back heading into the new campaign.

Urhoghide can play in that role but you sense the Hoops need a more specialised full-back.

Fortunately, supporters could have their wish granted with the addition of Soppy.

He is one of the best young players in his position in Europe, ranking as the third-best 18-year-old in Europe’s top five leagues via WhoScored heading into last November’s international break.

Now aged 19, the defender has shown plenty of incredibly dangerous traits. He’s quick, can beat a player with his technique and has wonderful agility.

In the words of talent scout Jacek Kulig, Soppy is “fantastic” and possesses “endless energy.”

Cut from a similar cloth as Frimpong, the young 5 foot 11 Frenchman would undoubtedly be a direct replacement.

With his eye-catching traits and the desperate need for a new right-back, fans should be elated with this pursuit.

AND in other news, Celtic may unearth another Leigh Griffiths by signing “wonderful” 18-goal gem…

Sri Lanka prepares for party of a lifetime

As another English season draws to a close, the trees turn yellow and the temperature falls, cupboards will be raided for fleeces and pullovers

Charlie Austin02-Jun-2002As another English season draws to a close, the trees turn yellow and the temperature falls, cupboards will be raided for fleeces and pullovers. England’s cricketers, however, will be polishing their sunglasses, ironing their linen shirts and stocking up on sun lotion, preparing for a return to serendipity.Eighteen months after their glorious series-sealing victory against Sri Lanka at the grassy-banked Sinhalese Sports Club, Nasser Hussain’s side is returning to Colombo, one Asia’s most laidback capital cities, hoping to kick-start their World Cup preparations with a successful ICC Champions Trophy.Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will hope that they will be followed by their famously loyal supporters, eager to top-up their tans before another long dark winter. The bitter memories of a shock home defeat may still linger, but the locals still reminisce fondly about England’s carnival-like tour.Barmy Army had a ball in Sri LankaFor two months England’s Union Jack clad Barmy Army cheered on their team, sung their songs and twisted their hips to the rhythmic drumming of local bands. Sri Lanka’s gyrating spectators couldn’t hide their delight – Nasser’s supporters also loved a cricket party. In the 1990s English supporters started to flock to the West Indies, especially Kensington Oval, Barbados and St. Johns, Antigua. The stadiums were been filled to the rafters, the supporters happily intoxicated by a heady mixture of cricket, Calypso and rum.The West Indies was attractive. Cricket was loved; a pastime with a permanent place in their cultural heritage and a glue that bound together different ethnicities. And aside from cricket there was paradise: sunshine, golden beaches and turquoise seas. For those wishing to party, the nightlife was exhilarating. No other destination could match the Caribbean’s intoxicating charm. Until, that is, a long time overdue, those men in grey suits at the home of cricket finally agreed to a full Test series in Sri Lanka. A new paradise was discovered.Sri Lanka is Asia’s Caribbean, a small island of great beauty, populated by a charming people. Elsewhere in the subcontinent travel can be an ordeal – in Sri Lanka it’s easy: the laid back pace of life coupled with the generousity and politeness of its inhabitants makes it so.Like in the Caribbean, cricket is cherished. Nowhere else in the world does a three-day school game attract 5,000 cheering spectators – in Sri Lanka such crowds are seen every year as Royal College take on St Thomas. From gabbling tri-shaw drivers to reclining beach boys, from blue suited businessmen to gossiping housewives, the game is followed with passion. In fact, it goes deeper than love. Success in cricket feeds the soul of country. The 1996 World Cup victory became an important marker point in the nation’s post-independence history – a source of confidence and pride. So it should come as no surprise that England’s supporters quickly warmed to Sri Lanka. Traipsing from the coconut palm-fringed beaches surrounding Galle International Stadium, to the lush hillsides hugging Asgiriya International Stadium, thousands enjoyed the holiday of a lifetime. Many will consider a return for the ICC Champions Trophy and those that do will discover a new spirit of confidence. A new government came to power in December, initiating a peace process that has gathered momentum by the day. Six months on and a civil war in the north is no longer; guns swapped for telephones, bunkers for the negotiating table. The resultant air of hope is intoxicating.Sri Lanka: a tropical paradiseSo although a difficult year for tourism worldwide, Colombo is bracing itself for a party. The two stadiums are being revamped, tour operators are busy plotting excursions, hoteliers are planning banquets and bars are signing up live bands. But the number of travellers is difficult to predict. Few expect the numbers that poured in for the England series. However, it is hoped the prospect of an exciting tournament, wedded to happy memories, a quickly maturing peace process and value for money, will attract large numbers of supporters.Indeed, Sri Lanka offers the cricket tourist unbeatable value for money. Some operators are offering 14-day package tours for as little GBP 620, inclusive of first class accommodation and a return flight. Tours to Australia and South Africa later in the winter cost significantly more. There is another reason for traveling – the cricket could be exceptional. The world’s best players will be playing, on pitches tailormade for blistering batting. “Come done Jayasuriya, Tendulkar, Lara, Klusner, Gilchrist and Flintoff…time to entertain.”So if haven’t yet planned an Autumnal sojourn, the time has come to scribble out that holiday leave form. The party starts on 12 September, England’s first game on 18 September. Don’t miss out on the trip of a lifetime.

Spurs make Ings priority

According to a report by The Telegraph, Fabio Paratici and co have made Southampton striker Danny Ings Tottenham’s new transfer priority this summer.

The Lowdown: New striker incoming?

Tottenham did not take up the option to make Carlos Vinicius’ 2020/2021 season-long loan a permanent move, with Sky Sports recently detailing that the club will be on the look out for a new forward.

Ings has been loosely linked to Spurs this summer but now The Telegraph have taken that one step further.

The Latest: Spurs make Ings priority…

As per the outlet and reliable journalist Matt Law, Paratici and co have now earmarked the 28-year-old as a possible partner for Harry Kane this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-2/” title=”Tottenham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is believed the club have now made Ings a priority signing for Spurs with a firm belief he can play alongside Kane under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Tottenham’s new manager allegedly wants to play two up front with a ready-made Premier League goal scorer next to their superstar talisman.

This comes after recruitment meetings, which followed the appointments of Nuno and Paratici, where it has been recommended that Spurs pursue Ings this summer.

The Verdict: Do it Paratici…

We could think of no better possible partner for Kane next season as Nuno eyes a dynamic duo up front.

Scoring 12 goals and assisting four others in the English top flight over 2020/2021, he also averaged more shots on goal per game (2) than the likes of Son Heung-min and Gareth Bale (WhoScored).

His threat in the final third is perhaps best summed up by Alan Hutton when speaking to Football Insider, who called simply him a ‘proven goalscorer’.

Jamie O’Hara also believes he would be a great Tottenham acquisition, labelling Ings the ‘perfect fit’ for Spurs when speaking to talkSPORT.

He could indeed be a worthwhile acquisition for Spurs this summer.

Many millions of dollars on the table

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) remained an anxious bystander yesterday as the game’s latest conflict simmered on the other side of the world

Tony Cozier22-Aug-2002The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) remained an anxious bystander yesterday as the game’s latest conflict simmered on the other side of the world.Along with the other nine full members of the International Cricket Council (ICC), the WICB will receive US$8.85 million (approximately BDS$17.7 million) for participating in next month’s Champions’ Trophy in Sri Lanka and next year’s World Cup in South Africa, not taking into account prize money of more than US$6 million. But both tournaments have been thrown into turmoil by a stand-off between the ICC and the players over sponsorship in which India and Australia are the teams most affected. No West Indians have individual endorsements that clash with those of the ICC. But the 14 named in the squad have been told by the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) to follow the Federation of International Cricketers Associations (FICA) line on a matter of principle and in the interest of unity.Like all ICC members, the WICB is required to sign the Participating Nations Agreement (PNA) under which it is committed to sending its best team to both tournaments. If its leading players absent themselves, it is likely to be heavily fined by the ICC, losing money that it cannot afford at a time when it has lost US$15 million over the last three years."The world of cricket is engulfed in an unprecedented crisis," the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement in Bangalore yesterday after its players refused to sign their contracts. The ICC is adamant that players relinquish personal sponsorships that conflict with its own official partners, covered by a US$550 million, seven-year deal for commercial rights it signed with Global Cricket Corporation (GCC) two years ago.But the Indian team, presently on tour of England, issued a statement on Monday night stating their reasons for rejecting the ICC contract."We are not boycotting the ICC, but the ICC is boycotting us," it charged.Acting on FICA advice, players from Australia, South Africa and the West Indies have also declined the contracts. Other participants – Bangladesh, England, Holland, Kenya, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka Zimbabwe – reportedly have had no problems with the contracts. The Indian board yesterday confirmed it would participate in the Champions Trophy, scheduled from September 12 to 29, even if it meant sending a weakened team. It revealed it had instructed its selectors to name 20 "probables" if it came to that."The board also believes that efforts to sort out problems should be through a process of consultation," it said in a media release. "With this view, the board had several rounds of discussions with the players to get out of the impasse over the last few days".ICC chief executive arrived in India yesterday and is expected to discuss the issue with the BCCI today.Neither India nor Australia has yet announced their teams for the tournament, in spite of the ICC’s August 12 deadline.Ironically, the WICB applied for an extension of the deadline to allow its selectors to assess form in the current Red Stripe Bowl, but was refused. It named its squad of 14 a week ago.
