Australians not taking success for granted in Sri Lanka

Despite being labelled favourites after their scorching form leading up tothe tournament, Ricky Ponting’s Australians are not taking success forgranted in the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy

Charlie Austin09-Sep-2002Despite being labelled favourites after their scorching form leading up tothe tournament, Ricky Ponting’s Australians are not taking success forgranted in the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy.Ponting, who took over the Australian one-day captaincy from Steve Waughlast winter, believes the 12-team tournament starting Thursday is going tobe very competitive."A lot of the sides are evenly matched," he said, minutes after the team’sarrival in Colombo. "New Zealand showed they can beat us last winter athome, India are always dangerous and England are now playing some goodcricket."Australia will also be wary of the fact they were knocked out early in thetwo previous `mini-world cups’ in 1998 and 2000."We’re just focusing on the first game against New Zealand at the moment,"he said. "We have played in this tournament twice and lost both to India."However, although understated, the self-confidence was palpable: "We knowthat if we play to our best then we are going to be very competitive."Coach John Buchanan – who dramatically described his role as "taking theteam into areas they have not been before" – was also confident, claiminghis side was ready to meet the challenge posed by the shrewd Kiwi’s.Referring to last winter, when Australia failed to qualify for the final ofthe Charlton and United one-day series, he said: "New Zealand played to agood game plan but I think we will be able to handle it a lot better thistime."Australia will play a practice match against the West Indies on Wednesdaybefore their first game on Sept 15.Ponting was relieved to have a break: "After four games in seven days and anightmarish journey from Kenya, we’re lucky to have a couple of days offbefore the New Zealand game."Looking back on the Kenya tour, Ponting was disappointed that the tri-seriesfinal against Pakistan at Nairobi on Saturday was washed out, denying them adeserved victory after four crushing wins."We performed well in Kenya after a long lay off and it was a disappointingend to what might have been a good game," he said. The two major plus points of that short tour were the reduced girth andrevitalised enthusiasm of leg-spinner Shane Warne, as well as theincreasingly consistent fast bowling of blonde haired speed merchant BrettLee."Brett (Lee) was the shining light of the Kenya trip," said Ponting. "Heremained genuinely quick but was more accurate.""Shane (Warne) has lost 10-12 kilos and is fitter than he has ever been inhis cricket career. Moreover, he is bowling well and turning the ball."

Hopes finishes off Tigers at Gabba

BRISBANE, Oct 27 AAP – Queensland all-rounder James Hopes continued his impressive one-day record as the Bulls reined in Tasmania’s batsmen in the ING Cup cricket clash at the Gabba today.

AAP27-Oct-2002BRISBANE, Oct 27 AAP – Queensland all-rounder James Hopes continued his impressive one-day record as the Bulls reined in Tasmania’s batsmen in the ING Cup cricket clash at the Gabba today.Tasmania was bowled out for 174 in the 46th over, with Hopes claiming three wickets from his final five deliveries to finish with 4-34 from 8.5 overs.Hopes was on a hat-trick after dismissing Damien Wright (four) and Xavier Doherty with successive balls and he bowled Adam Griffith for a duck three balls later. The 24-year-old has been a handy addition to the Bulls’ one-day team, taking 16 wickets in last season’s competition.Zimbabwe-raised quick Scott Brant (3-35) started the rot for Tasmania when he claimed the key wicket of Australian all-rounder Shane Watson (eight), who was brilliantly caught by wicketkeeper Wade Seccombe. With opening batsman Michael DiVenuto (five) also failing, the Tigers lacked the top-order spark they needed after being sent in to bat in overcast conditions.Captain Jamie Cox revived the Tigers with an efficient knock of 78 from 91 balls, joining Sean Clingeleffer (24 from 51) in a 66-run stand for the seventh wicket. But Cox’s dismissal to Hopes, swatting a running catch for Nathan Hauritz at long off, left the Tigers in trouble.”We have a history of falling about 20 runs short so, with five guys in the shed and 10 overs left, we decided to have a go,” Cox said.”We did fight pretty hard but, with the lights on and the white ball to face, conditions were pretty difficult.”Off-spinner Hauritz (1-33 from seven overs) made a sound return in his first match in almost two months.Hauritz had been away with the Australian Test and one-day squads in Kenya, Sri Lanka and Sharjah and only returned to Brisbane on Friday morning.

Matheus Pereira considering Al-Hilal offer

West Bromwich Albion forward Matheus Pereira is considering an offer that would see him leave The Hawthorns this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Joao Castelo-Branco, with the ESPN journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that, following a €15m (£12.8m) bid from Al-Hilal Riyadh, the 25-year-old is considering whether or not he would agree to a move to the Saudi Professional League.

Castelo-Branco goes on to state that, although the Brazilian would rather play in the Premier League, the salary offered by Al-Hilal is extremely tempting.

Finally, the journalist claims that West Brom themselves are looking for a fee much closer to £30m in order to sanction the sale of the winger this summer, however, if no other offers are made, Albion could well accept the Saudi club’s bid.

In his tweet, Castelo-Branco said: “Matheus Pereira considering Al Hilal offer. He would like to play in the Prem but salary is tempting. The Saudi club offered €15m to West Brom. They want £30m from PL clubs, but I would guess if no such offers are made they could accept at the end of the window.”

Fans will be devastated

Considering the fact that Pereira has been West Brom’s talisman for the past two years, if the club were to eventually sanction his sale for a fee as little as £12.8m, in addition to the winger moving to a league he is clearly far too good for, fans of Albion would surely be devastated.

Indeed, over his 33 Premier League appearances for the Baggies last season, the £13.5m-rated man scored 11 goals, provided six assists and created 11 big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of two shots and making 1.8 key passes per game.

These returns saw the £39k-per-week winger earn a highly impressive seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.18, ranking him as the club’s best performer in the top flight of English football.

As such, losing the services of Pereira this summer would not only be a major blow to Valerien Ismael’s chances of going on to secure an immediate return to the Premier League next season, but, for a fee that is £700k below his current market value, it would also not appear worthwhile financially for the club.

However, with Castelo-Branco claiming that the Baggies could well accept this offer come the end of August, fans should start preparing themselves to wave goodbye to their star player for pennies on the dollar.

ECB ponder radical domestic changes

The ECB’s board of directors will meet on Thursday to discuss radical changes to the English domestic structure, in response to the hype surrounding the Indian Premier League and the huge global success of Twenty20

Cricinfo staff26-May-2008The ECB’s board of directors will meet on Thursday to discuss radical changes to the English domestic structure, in response to the hype surrounding the Indian Premier League and the huge global success of Twenty20.Among the ideas being mooted are, according to today’s , a 21-team Twenty20 league and a revamped Pro40 competition of two 20-over innings per side, as well as a return to the three-day Championship. Perhaps most notable is the plan to divide the Championship into three conferences, with southern, midland and northern divisions. In addition, the ECB are committed to a four-nation Twenty20 quadrangular, bankrolled by the Texan billionaire Allen Stanford. It has been made abundantly clear that the IPL has shown the cricket world how to make vast amounts of money in a short space of time, and England – slightly peeved that they didn’t think of it first – want a slice of the pie. One such idea is an English Premier League to directly challenge its Indian counterpart, with the IPL champions joining the competition to inflate interest from overseas broadcasters. However, the EPL could mean a reduction in the number of county sides, with teams merging into franchises or regional sides, a notion many county chief executives have rejected out of hand. The radical changes could come into effect as early as 2010, coinciding with a renewed deal for broadcasters. ECB’s current contract with BSkyB, Five and the BBC, worth £220m, expires at the end of the 2009 season.

Villa trailing Newcastle in Tuanzebe race

Aston Villa could miss out to Newcastle United in the race for Axel Tuanzebe, according to Football Insider.

The lowdown

The Manchester United defender has been made available for loan following the signing of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

And Dean Smith is apparently keen to recruit an ‘athletic’ centre-back to provide cover and competition for the first-choice partnership of Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa.

Tuanzebe has already spent time on loan at Villa Park, but intriguingly it was during Steve Bruce’s tenure.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has previously hailed Tuanzebe, who made nine Premier League appearances last season, as ‘outstanding’.

The latest

As per a recruitment source, Newcastle have the advantage after Bruce assured Solskjaer that Tuanzebe would enjoy a ‘regular starting role’ at St James’ Park. Manchester United are seemingly concerned that the 23-year-old wouldn’t be afforded those kind of opportunities at Villa.

The report does offer supporters some grounds for hope, though, by pointing out that covering the ‘multi-million pound’ loan fee as well as the player’s wages would be ‘less of an issue’ for Villa than it would be for the Magpies.

The verdict

Recruiting an additional centre-back is an absolute must for Villa. Smith only has three senior options at his disposal at present and adding genuine competition will theoretically extract more from Konsa and, especially, Mings.

Tuanzebe would be an excellent signing, but you can very much understand Manchester United’s concerns.

Perhaps Smith could express a willingness to use a 3-5-2 shape in certain games, significantly improving Tuanzebe’s prospects. That would also have the added bonus of accommodating both Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins at the head of the team.

In other news, there’s an update on Villa’s pursuit of James Ward-Prowse.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul will battle through the discomfort after Chris Gayle promised his trio of injured senior players would face Australia in the second ODI at Grenada on Friday. Chanderpaul missed the opening match on Tuesday, which West Indies lost by 84 runs, while Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan turned out despite groin complaints. With West Indies desperate for victory to avoid a 2-0 deficit, Gayle confirmed Chanderpaul’s calf injury had healed enough for him to play. Chanderpaul was immoveable during the Test series, when he scored 442 runs in the three games, and his inclusion will be a boost for the hosts.”They will play in this game, everybody is back,” Gayle said. “The majority of the senior players are carrying injuries, not everybody is 100% at this time.”Gayle’s issue is a long-standing one, but he appeared in the third Test and the opening one-day game. He picked up 20 as West Indies fell for 189 and captured 1 for 55. “I’m feeling good,” he said. “The injury is getting better, I gave you guys ten overs on the trot, I’m trying to play my part in the team.”The West Indies felt they bowled badly in the first contest and they will try to take advantage of what Ricky Ponting has called a subcontinent-style surface in Grenada. “Obviously we want to square the series and try and bounce back as quickly as possible,” Gayle said. “We don’t want them to get away to 2-0.”
