Expert claims Liverpool should not sign target Walukiewicz

Forza Italian Football editor Conor Clancy believes Cagliari defender Sebastian Walukiewicz is not ready for a move to Liverpool.

The 21-year-old centre-back made 21 appearances for Serie A side Cagliari last season and has already claimed three international caps with Poland.

According to Italian outlet Calcio Mercato, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is monitoring Walukiewicz and mulling over whether to make a move before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

The report claims the Merseysiders’ Premier League rivals Manchester United and Chelsea are also keeping tabs on the talented youngster.

Liverpool’s interest comes despite being handed the boost of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez returning to the fold following lengthy spells on the sidelines.

Dutchman van Dijk was on the treatment table for nine months after suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage and Gomez was out of action for eight months thanks to sustaining a knee injury while on international duty with England.

Serie A expert Clancy believes a move to Liverpool would come too soon in Walukiewicz’s career.

He told Football FanCast: “Playing centre-back for Liverpool is obviously quite a specialised role. You saw last season that once van Dijk was out, it went to pot a little bit.

“Going from Cagliari to Liverpool is a big jump and I would be cautious about anybody who were to make that step. I wouldn’t be so sure.”

Celtic: Georgios Giakoumakis links emerge

Celtic have opened negotiations with VVV-Venlo over a move for striker Georgios Giakoumakis, according to The Daily Record.

The Lowdown: Giakoumakis profiled

Giakoumakis, who stands at 6 feet tall, is a Greece international and has been with his current employers for 12 months.

During that time, the 26-year-old has scored 29 times in 33 appearances, 26 of which came in the Eredivisie last season.

Giakoumakis was described as a ‘phenomenon’ by Dutch journalist Jeroen Kapteijns, and it seems as if he could well be on the move to Glasgow.

The Latest: Postecoglou phone call

According to The Daily Record, talks have begun over a potential £2.5m move to Parkhead.

Ange Postecoglou is thought to be playing a central role in any move and called Giakoumakis to discuss a possible transfer.

The forward was left impressed by Postecoglou’s approach and is interested in leading Celtic’s attack.

The Verdict: Sign

Should Odsonne Edouard get the Celtic Park exit he has been working on, a replacement will be needed and Giakoumakis could be an ideal candidate.

He’s just come off the most productive season in front of goal of his career and appears to be in his prime at 26.

A £2.5m fee could also prove to be a shrewd piece of business, especially as his Transfermarkt valuation has skyrocketed over the past six months.

Vaughan move talk played down

Michael Vaughan plays down talk of a county move while Hampshire say they haven’t approached him

With the early success of Kevin Pietersen’s England captaincy, Michael Vaughan’s reign suddenly feels a very long time ago. Vaughan has returned to action following the break he took after resigning, but has continued to struggle for runs while rumours circulate that he is considering a change of counties.Warwickshire and Hampshire – Pietersen’s county – are two sides Vaughan has been linked to, but Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove said he hadn’t made an approach. “It doesn’t surprise me that the link has been made at this time but I haven’t spoke to Michael since he resigned,” he told BBC Radio Solent. “Every time any player gets remotely available he gets associated with us.”This is the time of the season when contracts come up for renewal and squads are strengthened. It’s not quite the Premiership transfer window, but that doesn’t stop a lot of speculation.Earlier this week, after falling for 19 against Sussex, Vaughan aimed to quash the rumours. “I am not sure where the speculation is coming from, but I am getting fed up with it. I am just trying to find some form with Yorkshire.”When Vaughan stepped down as captain he made it clear he wanted to continue his international career as a batsman with a view to playing in the Ashes next year. “I’ll still have all the experience and knowledge to pass on and I hope to be a valuable player for both my county and the England team,” he said. However, his three Championship innings for Yorkshire since he returned have brought scores of 10, 0 and 19 to continue a poor run of form stretching back most of the summer. In his last eight first-class innings he hasn’t passed 21 and, even though England won’t name their Test squad until September 29, it seems highly unlikely he will make the India tour. Vaughan could also lose his central contract when the new 12-month deals are announced at Lord’s on Tuesday.

Hatfield: Leicester more attractive than Wolves to Vestergaard

Leicester City were simply in a much stronger position than Wolves in the race for Jannik Vestergaard, says Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield.

According to The Athletic, Wolves were keen on signing Vestergaard from Southampton as Bruno Lage looked to bolster his backline.

However, in the end, the 29-year-old centre-back ended up joining Leicester for £15m in a blow to the Midlands club.

Hatfield believes it is a deal Wolves would have loved to have got over the line, but it was always going to be difficult based on where the two Premier League sides currently are.

“It would have been one which I think Wolves would have really liked to have seen done, but ultimately Leicester are in a stronger position than Wolves in terms of where they’re finishing in the table and the squad that they’ve got,” Hatfield told TT.

“It’s one Wolves would have loved to happen, but Vestergaard ultimately has gone to a team a few steps ahead of Wolves at the moment.”

In defence, Lage has at least been able to sign Yerson Mosquera and Rayan Ait-Nouri permanently.

However, the former Benfica boss will surely want a bit more before the transfer window closes, especially after Wolves’ slow start to the season. His side are yet to pick up a point or score a goal, losing both of their first two games against Leicester and Tottenham.

Middlesex have named their 15-man squad for the Stanford Super Series in Antigua with Shaun Udal retained as captain after his late-season spell in charge.Ed Smith, who began the season as club captain, hasn’t been included which signals his time at Middlesex is drawing to a close. He injured himself at the beginning of the Twenty20 Cup and didn’t play again during the summer, handing over the captaincy firstly to Ed Joyce then to Udal. Two new faces have been named. The former Kent batsman, Neil Dexter and Warwickshire allrounder Neil Carter. Middlesex have signed Dexter on a long-term contract and Carter has been brought in on loan. “We are very grateful to Warwickshire for all their assistance in this matter,” said chief executive Vinny Codrington.Andrew Strauss will have the opportunity to take on his England team-mates, but Owais Shah will be involved with the national squad and isn’t available. Dirk Nannes, the left-arm fast bowler, is the other notable absentee from the side that beat Kent in the Twenty20 final after he returned to Victoria for the Australian domestic season. However, Middlesex have been able to retain the services of their other oveseas players – Tyron Henderson and Murali Kartik – for the week-long tournament. Henderson was the final-over hero at The Rose Bowl in July when he found three late yorkers to stop Kent’s chances of victory, while Kartik’s spin-partnership with Udal has been a revelation.Middlesex will depart for Antigua on October 19 ahead of their first match, against England, on October 26. Their major game is against the current Stanford 20/20 champions, Trinidad and Tobago, on October 27 which is with US$200,000 for the winning team.Squad Shaun Udal (capt), Neil Carter, Neil Dexter, Steven Finn, Billy Godleman, Tyron Henderson, Ed Joyce, Murali Kartik, Dawid Malan, Eoin Morgan, Tim Murtagh, David Nash, Alan Richardson, Ben Scott, Andrew Strauss.

Nannes grabs seven as Victoria destroy Bulls

Dirk Nannes demolished Queensland with a career-best 7 for 50 that set up an easy nine-wicket win for Victoria, the day after he also frustrated the Bulls with the bat. Nannes was not surprisingly the Man of the Match having collecting his first ten-wicket haul in first-class cricket – he finished with 11 for 95 – and his team-mates cruised past their target of 43 before tea on the third day.The result was a formality after Nannes brutalised the Bulls batting line-up. At one stage he was on a hat-trick after picking up Andrew Symonds for a first-ball duck. Symonds, who is trying to return to top form to put himself in the national selectors’ thoughts, tried to clip Nannes to leg but the ball ended up flying straight to gully. With the previous delivery Nannes had removed James Hopes for 32 and although Greg Moller survived the hat-trick ball, there was more devastation from Nannes to come. He eventually ended the resistance of Moller, who top scored with 38, while Clint McKay chipped in with two wickets.McKay trapped Martin Love, who was struggling with a groin injury and required a runner, and then returned to finish the innings when Chris Swan went for 18. The Bulls had fizzled out for 150 and were wondering how they let Victoria’s tail sting them on the second day, when the No. 11 Nannes combined with Rob Quiney for a 79-run stand.Chris Rogers (1) was the only casualty in Victoria’s second innings as Brad Hodge and Nick Jewell saw them home for their first win of the campaign. It was the second consecutive Gabba Sheffield Shield match to finish inside three days.
