Smith 2.0 upgrade works wonders

Graeme Smith’s century on the fourth day in Perthsent a louder message to Australia than any amount of verbal banter

Graeme Smith entered the series quiet, confident and keen to let histeam’s cricket do the talking. His century on the fourth day in Perthsent a louder message to Australia than any amount of verbal banterand despite Australia’s efforts to make a noisy reply with latewickets, Smith’s 108 made a near-record target seem almost manageable.During the past year Smith has built a reputation as a leader whostands up at the big moments. At Lord’s, when South Africa werefollowing-on, his 107 ensured that they escaped with a draw and a brilliantunbeaten 154 at Edgbaston helped them reach their target of 281. It was an innings of sheer class and one that he declared his greatest ever, as it secured South Africa’s first series win in England for 43 years.Their record against Australia is similarly poor. They have not beatenthem in a series since 1969-70 and have never managed the task inAustralia. So when Smith calmly constructed a century at the WACA itgave hope to the South African fans that maybe, just maybe, anotherchapter in their cricketing history was about to be rewritten. But asgood as England can be they are a less daunting opponent thanAustralia at home and 414 is an altogether more frightening targetthan 281.When Smith and Hashim Amla both departed in the final session it leftSouth Africa needing to complete the second-highest chase of all timewithout their key men. They would also have to significantly eclipsetheir previous best chase of 335 against Australia in Durban in2001-02. Smith at least gave them early hope. His talent has been apparent to Australians since he made 68 againstthem on his Test debut at Cape Town in 2002 at the age of 21. Since that day Smith had powered through Test attacks the world over and led his No. 2-ranked side so well that they have not lost a series in twoyears but he had not managed another half-century against Australia. Now Australia have seen two Graeme Smiths visit their shores for Testtours. Version 1.0, released in 2005-06, made a lot of noise, didn’t do what it promised and had a tendency to crash the system. Theupdated edition, Version 2.0, has been nearly three years indevelopment. Like most upgrades it is quieter and smoother, sturdierand longer-lasting.”There was a period for maybe a year I went through one or twotechnical challenges,” Smith said. “More mentally than anything else I think the captaincy in terms of touring big nations at that age, trying to guide a team in the right direction, all those things were on my shoulders.”Growing up, settling down and just mentally being more calm and focused in what I wanted to achieve was certainly a big thing for me. I think I’m much more calm at the crease and focused on what I want to do each ball and to each bowler. It makes a big change for me from the last time I played here.”The coolness was evident when Smith walked to the crease today. He isthe type of batsman who can dominate an attack or can defend as thesituation demands. His task was made more difficult by the clevercaptaincy of Ricky Ponting, who placed Andrew Symonds at shortmidwicket, where Smith likes to pick off runs early in his innings. But Smith was patient. He waited for opportunities, drove straightwhen he could and after going to tea on 34 from 64 balls, he began toopen up.When his century came with a pair of boundaries cut off MitchellJohnson, his celebrations were muted. There were a couple of quick bat-raises and the sort of restrained smile usually reserved for people conscious of their bad teeth, and Smith was back at the crease, determined to bat through the day.It didn’t happen and the loss of Smith and Amla has left the match in the balance. But for a man who has experienced such success around the globe yet such disappointment against Australia, it was a day that confirmed his growth. South Africa might win the match or they may not but at least Smith has ensured they have sent the world’s No. 1 team amessage that cannot be ignored.

Wolves: Moore move down list of priorities

A report has cast doubt on the possibility of Wolverhampton Wanderers renewing their efforts to sign Kieffer Moore.

Alex Dicken, writing for Birmingham Live, claims that strengthening the attack isn’t Bruno Lage’s main priority.

The lowdown

Wolves ‘acted on their interest’ in Moore in the final knockings of the transfer window. They made a bid for the Cardiff City striker, but saw it rejected.

Cardiff boss Mick McCarthy was publicly critical of Wolves’ late approach, calling it ‘crazy’ and suggesting it made ‘everyone panic’.

McCarthy values Moore highly given his ‘terrific’ performances and ‘amazing’ work-rate (via Wales Online).

Wolves were however able to sign a striker during the summer, with Hwang Hee-chan arriving from RB Leipzig on a season-long loan with an option to buy (via BBC Sport).

The latest

Moore would apparently be keen on a move to the Midlands outfit, where he would get the chance to work with Wales coach Tony Roberts.

However, Lage sees bigger weaknesses in the team which need to be addressed.

Indeed, it’s Lille midfielder Renato Sanches who is said to be his primary target.

The verdict

Wolves fans may have already thought that signing Hwang would preclude any further striker moves, particularly with Fabio Silva already on the books as a deputy to Raul Jimenez.

But Moore offers something very different to the South Korean. He’s an almighty aerial presence, comfortably leading the Championship for successful aerial duels per 90 minutes last season with a frankly remarkable 10.5 per game (via WhoScored).

He also scored 20 goals for the Bluebirds, and so even if Wolves move on, he should have other Premier League suitors, ranking as the second best player in the league last term, ahead of now Premier League star Ivan Toney.

Man Utd fans slam Fernandes v Aston Villa

Some Manchester United fans have been left slamming the display of Bruno Fernandes in the first half of their game against Aston Villa at Saturday lunchtime.

Although the Portugal international showed his class with some wonderful passes at times, some members of the Old Trafford faithful were left disappointed by a few of his efforts on goal.

Fernandes squandered a good chance within the first few minutes of the match, and put one of his freekicks straight into the wall, leaving some Red Devils supporters questioning why Cristiano Ronaldo is not taking them over him.

Nonetheless, the 27-year-old knows he can certainly do better, with no fewer than four goals already in the Premier League so far this season before today’s fixture (Transfermarkt), and will be hoping to grab a goal in the second half.

These MUFC fans slammed his performance in the first half on Twitter, with one even going as far as to claim that he is ‘horrible’ at set pieces:

Masakadza leads Zimbabwe's 5-0 sweep

Zimbabwe sealed the five-match series, a lopsided battle of the minnows, with a seven-wicket win in Nairobi to record a clean sweep

Cricinfo staff04-Feb-2009
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were outZimbabwe sealed the five-match series, a lopsided battle of the minnows, with a seven-wicket win in Nairobi to record a clean sweep. They were barely challenged, save for two early wickets, in their chase of a modest 200 as Hamilton Masakadza, Stuart Matsikenyeri and Sean Williams compiled attacking half-centuries to steer them home with 15 overs to spare. The win was set up by the Zimbabwe spinners, led by Graeme Cremer, who took 4 for 31, while Masakadza picked up 2 for 20, which he backed up with his run-a-ball 84. A seventh-wicket partnership of 75 between Collins Obuya and Rajesh Bhudia helped Kenya claw back from a middle-order collapse in a desperate bid to save face in a series already lost.Things didn’t look so rosy for the visitors at the start of their chase. They lost Keith Dabengwa off the second ball, chasing Peter Ongondo’s away swinger, and then Vusi Sibanda in the following over, edging Lameck Onyango to Maurice Ouma. Game on with Zimbabwe 2 for 2 but that was to be Kenya’s only period of domination as Masakadza and Matsikenyeri led a quick recovery.Masakadza set the tone with consecutive boundaries through the on side off Ongondo while Matsikenyeri looked to attack with aerial shots over the same region. Kenya needed a wicket but the breakthrough came a little too late, after the pair had added a match-winning 93. Matsikenyeri, ironically, perished to his favoured on-side region, hitting it down Rakep Patel’s throat at mid-on off Hiren Varaiya shortly after reaching his fifty.Masakadza too reached his half-century, off 52 balls, and found an able partner in Williams, who took on the bowling straightaway. He was harsh on the spinners, Patel and Varaiya, picking them for powerful boundaries through the off side. He reached his fifty – his ninth – with a four past mid-off off Ongondo shortly before the victory. The final act was reserved for Masakadza – the highest run-scorer in the series – who picked Onyango for consecutive boundaries to seal the series.Collins Obuya’s tenacious effort of 75 was the only noteworthy performance for the home side, who’d elected to bat. They made a solid start with the opening pair of Kennedy Otieno and Seren Waters putting on 45 but the batting caved in once Masakadza had Otieno caught by Ray Price in the ninth over. The Zimbabwe bowlers not only managed to choke the top order but struck at regular intervals and the hosts were reduced to 92 for 6. The match looked to be going the same way as other games in the series, completely in Zimbabwe’s favour. However, Obuya and Rajesh Bhudia’s stand helped Kenya claw back. Budhia’s cameo, off 49 balls, included six boundaries and it set Kenya up for Obuya’s late assault.Budhia’s run-out in the 46th over though sparked another collapse as Cremer struck three times in two overs. In a turnaround from his slow approach early on, Obuya tore into Elton Chigumbara in the 48th over, slamming three sixes and two fours in that over. The late charge gave the total some respectability but in the end, Kenya were well short. The whitewash has also earned Prosper Utseya’s team a promotion in the ICC ODI rankings, displacing Ireland from the tenth spot.

Johnson must unleash Huggins vs Cheltenham

While Lee Johnson’s high-flying Sunderland side should not have too much trouble securing three points in the visit of mid-table Cheltenham Town on Tuesday evening, a number of injuries and fitness worries in the Black Cats squad could be something of a cause for concern for the 40-year-old manager.

Indeed, with both left-back Dennis Cirkin and centre-back Callum Doyle being assessed before the fixture due to their respective knocks, while Lynden Gooch is also sidelined for the clash as the winger is yet to recover from a hamstring injury, Johnson will have a number of tough calls to make in the build-up to the match.

Johnson must unleash Huggins

Regarding the potential absence of Cirkin in particular, although it will undoubtedly come as a blow to the Mackems manager to lose a player who has highly impressed since his summer move from Tottenham Hotspur, the 19-year-old’s unavailability could be something of an opportunity for Sunderland, as it presents an opening for another exciting youngster to get some much-needed game time.

Indeed, following his own summer switch from Leeds United, 20-year-old Niall Huggins has so far made just one appearance in League One, coming on for the injured Cirkin in the club’s 1-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers last weekend.

And, despite naturally being a right-back, the £180k-rated man turned in an extremely solid performance on the opposite flank in the win over the Trotters, blocking one shot, making three interceptions, making one tackle and winning one duel over the course of his 24 minutes on the pitch – seeing him earn a very respectable SofaScore match rating of 6.9.

The defender also impressed in the Black Cats’ 2-0 Carabao Cup victory against Wigan Athletic last week, providing one assist and creating one big chance for his teammates, as well as making one interception, one tackle and one clearance – with these returns seeing the player Ian Harte dubbed a “fantastic” talent receive a SofaScore match rating of 7.3.

As such, should Cirkin indeed miss out on Tuesday evening, it would appear highly advisable for Johnson to unleash Huggins against the Robins, as the Leeds loanee clearly has the ability to be something of a game-changer for the promotion hopefuls.
