Leeds must avoid selling Brazil star Raphinha

Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani must avoid making a massive mistake by selling Raphinha amid a recent transfer claim.

What’s the story?

The Brazil star has been in scintillating form for his country during the international break, including a game-changing performance against Venezuela when he came on as a substitute and helped set up two goals in a 3-1 win.

That has since seen former Premier League striker Gabby Agbonlahor drop a major claim that Marcelo Bielsa’s side will find it difficult to keep hold of Raphinha in the long-term, and that he could look to push for a move away sooner rather than later.

He said: “I think it’s going to be very hard. Leeds need more investment in their squad, they need to start buying players that can keep them fighting even further up the table.

“Over the next year, year and a half, people like Raphinha will leave, his head will get turned by other clubs. Raphinha is getting into Brazil squads, he’s playing for Brazil now. He’s not going to want to play for Leeds, he’s going to want to move and play for a bigger club that’s playing in the Champions League. Someone of Raphinha’s quality should be playing in the Champions League.

“It’s just the reality of football. If Leeds can’t invest and get a better squad that’s challenging to get into Europe he will want to leave. That’s just normal.”

Time for Radrizzani to act

After embarking on a spending spree in their first transfer window after clinching promotion to the Premier League – the club broke their transfer record to sign Rodrigo and also snapped up the likes of Robin Koch and Diego Llorente among others for decent amounts too – they were far quieter this summer.

The Whites spent almost half of what they did last year, bringing in Jack Harrison on a permanent basis from Manchester City, signing Barcelona ace Junior Firpo, and clinching a late deal for Manchester United’s Dan James.

With The Athletic’s Phil Hay already admitting that some of European football’s heavyweights could make a big bid for Kalvin Phillips sometime soon, losing him and/or Raphinha would be a monumental blow for Leeds.

If the Yorkshire club are intent on making progress and eventually closing the gap to the Premier League’s ‘big six’, and pushing for a potential European spot too, then continuing to spend money on reinforcing the squad is key to convincing the likes of Raphinha and Phillips that they can achieve their goals here at Elland Road.

It’s now become imperative for Radrizzani to put his money where his mouth is over these next couple of transfer windows, and show his star players and the fans as a whole that he wants this club to take that all important next step.

Selling Raphinha would leave fans absolutely fuming. It would be an unforgivable mistake on the part of the Leeds supremo to do so. He is too good a player to lose.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has delivered his take on Kalvin Phillips’ future…

Napier reflects on rapid rise

Graham Napier is still trying to come to terms with what has been a whirlwind year as he has gone from a bit-part county player to an England international with a stop at the IPL on the way.Napier was one of two uncapped players named in England’s ICC World Twenty20 as he gained reward for his memorable displays in last year’s Twenty20 Cup where he hit 152 against Sussex. That innings was enough to earn an IPL deal with Mumbai Indians and on the same day he earned his international call he was also told he would make his first appearance for Mumbai.”I got a phone call from the selectors on Thursday evening to notify me I would be in the squad,” Napier told cricketheroes.co.uk. “Around about the same time I was told there was a possibility that I would play for Mumbai Indians the next day, which made for a very nervous evening. I didn’t sleep well at all that night.””Everything has happened very quickly; the last year has whizzed by in terms of where I’m going with my cricket,” he added. “This selection [for the England Twenty20 squad] has capped off all I’ve been working towards. But the really hard work begins now.”The following day Napier hit 15 and took 1 for 27 as Mumbai beat Kolkata Knight Riders by nine runs, but he said his experience in South Africa would have been invaluable even if he hadn’t managed to play a game before returning to England.”I got to train and play with some of the best cricketers in the world for a month. When you mix with people like Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya, Harbhajan Singh, JP Duminy and Lasith Malinga you can only learn new things and get better.”I was quite nervous, which is not normal for me,” he added about his Mumbai debut. “I felt like a young lad again, playing for Essex in 1997 in a new side at a top level. It did bring back a lot of memories of that time. It wasn’t my most spectacular performance but I feel I made an important contribution and was satisfied with the win.”Twenty20 has rejuvenated Napier’s career at a time when he was threatening to drift out of county cricket, unable to secure a place in either the four-day or one-day team at Chelmsford.”When I first set my heart on playing for England there wasn’t the option of a Twenty20 squad to think about,” he said. “Since that format came around I felt it was a game that suited me and was one where I could do well in.”Napier will join his Essex team-mates Ravi Bopara and James Foster in the England squad and he is looking forward to having a few familiar faces around when he meets up with his international colleagues in June. “I’ve never been part of the England set-up before so it will be good to be able to call upon the experience of two county team-mates who can guide and help me through.”

Roberto Firmino linked with Liverpool exit

Liverpool have had a stupendous start to their 2021/22 Premier League campaign in front of goal with a total of 22 goals scored in their opening eight league games of the season.

Their latest league outing saw Jurgen Klopp’s side put five goals past Watford in their thrashing of the Hornets at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

However, it seems as though the Merseyside club could potentially lose one of their current attacking stars in the near future.

What’s the news?

It has recently been reported that AC Milan and Bayern Munich are both interested in signing Reds star Roberto Firmino, who scored three out of Liverpool’s five goals against Watford at the weekend, to help strengthen their squads.

The Brazilian’s contract expires in 2023 so next summer will be the last time the Reds can cash in on him unless he signs a new deal.

A major blow?

Liverpool signed Firmino back in the 2015 summer transfer window from German club Hoffenheim for a reported fee of £29m.

Since then, the 30-year-old, who is currently valued at £36m according to Transfermarkt, has made a total of 299 appearances for the Reds across all competitions in which he has managed to score 93 goals and provide 70 assists along the way.

So far this season, Firmino has appeared in six out of Liverpool’s eight Premier League games, starting just two of them.

In terms of a potential move away from Liverpool to either Milan or Bayern, we feel that this would be a big blow for Klopp’s side even though Firmino hasn’t been starting regularly for the team this season. He he has still shown he can still be a useful attacking option for the Reds alongside the likes of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah who also scored against the Hornets at the weekend.

In addition to this, given how long Firmino has been at the club and what he has delivered for them in terms of goals and assists over the years, we feel that the Liverpool fans would not be happy to see him leave the club. After all, he was such a vital cog when they won both the Premier League and Champions League.

With Firmino’s current contract at Anfield expiring in just under two years, we feel that the club should try their hardest to keep hold of the attacker and possibly even consider offering him a new deal if they don’t end up signing a replacement for him before then.

Liverpool handed big Curtis Jones boost

Jurgen Klopp has been sweating over the fitness of Curtis Jones over the last week and in a period where Liverpool have been dealt a fitness blow to Thiago Alcantara, it was crucial that the academy graduate was fit.

Naby Keita scored against Atletico Madrid in midweek but his performance was ultimately poor, being dragged off at half-time in a display that rather summed up his topsy-turvy Anfield career.

Fortunately, it looks as though Jones will be back in the squad after missing the game with Diego Simeone’s side in midweek.

That’s according to Klopp who was speaking in his pre-match press conference a few days before their clash with Manchester United.

In quotes supplied by The Athletic, the German boss said:

“Curtis will train today [Friday]. He should be in contention for Sunday.”

Considering his performances this term, this will come as a huge boost to Liverpool’s chances on Sunday afternoon. Given Thiago’s injury, it will also be a return that delights the Reds’ head coach.

The 20-year-old initially aggravated a problem while playing for England U21s which after really coming into his own over the last few months, represented a cruel blow.

He starred against Porto in the Champions League before the break, supplying two goals. The youngster was also in vibrant form against Manchester City, proving he has what it takes to stand out in the biggest of games.

During that encounter, Jones assisted Mo Salah’s incredible individual goal, completed 93% of his passes and won five defensive duels. That encapsulated the midfielder’s all-round talents.

Those attributes will be crucial if he plays on Sunday, especially against a midfield containing the likes of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes.

Keeping that in mind, Klopp will no doubt be over the moon that one of his most promising players is back fit and ready to go again.

Liverpool have been in imperious form of late and another win over one of their biggest rivals will no doubt send a huge statement out. If they do come away with all three points then it’s likely that Jones will have played a key role.

Base forte e treino extra diário: Léo Santos é futuro (e presente) do Timão
