NUFC: Magpies dealt big injury blow

A worrying injury setback has emerged on Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier.

What’s the latest?

Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope has revealed that the full-back is set to be out of action for an undetermined period of time after suffeing a blow against Aston Villa.

He Tweeted: “I’m told Kieran Trippier has broken a bone in his foot & faces spell on sidelines.”

Trippier was forced off injured in the second-half on Sunday and replaced by Emil Krafth at right-back, having scored what turned out to be the winning goal earlier in the match.

Newcastle will be devastated

This major setback for Eddie Howe’s will leave fans gutted as it could be a huge blow for Newcastle if Trippier ends up missing a big number of games through injury. He has had a sensational impact since his January move from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid and has been pivotal to the recent upturn in form in the Premier League.

The England international has averaged a phenomenal WhoScored rating of 7.87 in the top-flight since making the switch – starting four league matches. Newcastle picked up a whopping 10 points in those games to move four points clear of the relegation zone, having previously been behind Norwich in the table.

No Magpies player has averaged a higher score this term, with Chris Wood (7.11) and Allan Saint-Maximin (7.25) the only players who are also above the 7.00 mark. This highlights how much of an impact Trippier has had on the team as he is already performing to a far higher standard than his teammates despite settling into a new team after just a month at the club.

He has proven himself to be an attacking threat as well as a solid defender. The full-back has scored twice in his last two outings, against Villa and Everton, whilst he has averaged 6.0 tackles and interceptions per game to show off his defensive strength.

Therefore, fans will be devastated that he could now be out of action for a significant period of time with this broken bone in his foot. The side will be weakened by his absence, as shown by his statistics since joining, and that could drag the team closer to the bottom three and put them back in danger of dropping back down to the Championship.

Although, it remains to be seen how long he will be out for exactly. Fans may have to wait until Eddie Howe’s next press conference to hear the extent of the damage.

Everton team news vs Man Utd

Patrick Boyland has now dropped a quadruple boost for Everton ahead of their game at home to Manchester United in the Premier League at lunchtime.

The Lowdown: Lampard pressure

With reports emerging that Frank Lampard could be sacked if they lose to the Red Devils at Goodison Park, the former Derby County and Chelsea manager is now under huge pressure to get a result.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Merseyside club are currently lurking dangerously above the relegation zone, and so they really need to start picking up points fast, with the visit of an out of sorts United team possibly offering a great chance to do so.

The Latest: Team news

Taking to Twitter, The Athletic journalist Boyland has revealed that Seamus Coleman, Allan, Michael Keane and Fabian Delph are ‘all back’ with the squad.

They have all been missing recently through injuries and suspensions, but now Lampard can call on them if needed.

The Verdict: Boost

It will certainly be a boost for Lampard to have four first-team players back in his squad to choose from.

The Toffees currently have five players out injured, meaning Lampard was without a whopping nine options to choose from against Burnley.

Nonetheless, it will be a difficult task to get three points against a team with high European ambitions, but Lampard will at least be boosted by having a sizeable group of players to choose from.

Resolvemos aceitar.

Full-strength teams likely for deciding Test

Lasith Malinga, Sachin Tendulkar, and Gautam Gambhir returned to training two days before the series-decider begins at the P Sara Oval on Tuesday. Malinga had missed the second Test because of a stiff knee and a bout of fever. Gambhir was out because of a swelling in his knee, while Tendulkar missed the final day’s play of the second Test because of a groin strain. That Tendulkar and Gambhir are rested for the upcoming tri-series had raised doubts around their participation in the final Test too, but they seemed to have recovered well. The other man rested for the one-dayers, Harbhajan Singh skipped the training session, but the team management suggested there was no injury scare.Chanaka Welegedara, who was left out of the second Test to sort out his rhythm, was one of the three Sri Lankan players to join Malinga in what was an optional training session. “Even though he dismissed Virender Sehwag twice in Galle, we decided a week’s work with the coaching staff will get his rhythm back,” Mahela Jayawardene wrote of the decision to drop Welegedara.A selection committee decision for the third Test was expected later in the night. Sri Lanka’s bowling coach, Champaka Ramanayake, though, was positive after the light training session that Malinga was fit.India had a full session, and neither Tendulkar nor Gambhir looked in any apparent discomfort. If Tendulkar plays the P Sara Test, as all indications point to at the moment, he will become the most capped Test player in the world, overtaking Steve Waugh’s 168.Gambhir hasn’t had a great series so far. His couldn’t last an over in both innings in Galle, and then injured his knee, only to see M Vijay score a half-century on a flat SSC track against an attack missing Malinga, the man who dismissed him twice in five deliveries. “Gautam is raring to go,” captain MS Dhoni had said two days ago.Yuvraj Singh, who also missed the second Test because of fever, is back to fitness, but the call on whether to bring him back at the expense of the debut centurion Suresh Raina will be a tough one for India to make.

Everton can replace Richarlison with Jovic

With just eight games to go this season, Everton still find themselves in a relegation battle in the Premier League, however, this hasn’t stopped Frank Lampard from eyeing up potential transfer targets ahead of next season – with an update emerging on one particular target in LaLiga.

What’s the word?

According to Spanish publication Marca (via Sport Witness), Everton are keeping an extremely close eye on Luka Jovic’s performances for Real Madrid ahead of a potential summer swoop, with the striker set to be given a second chance at his current club following an injury complaint from Karim Benzema.

Further reports have suggested that Real Madrid would be willing to part ways with Jovic for a figure of around €30m (£25m) this summer.

Bye-bye Richarlison

There have been numerous reports linking Everton forward Richarlison with a move to Manchester United at the end of the season, with the Brazilian even changing agents ahead of the summer transfer window.

If the Toffees star does leave this summer, it would be the perfect opportunity for Lampard to make a move for Jovic – who could well be a fantastic replacement for the 24-year-old next season.

The £152k-per-week ace who was hailed “dangerous” by Mladen Krstajic has only started 13 games for Real Madrid since joining in 2019 with only three goals from his 49 appearances.

However, his incredible form at his former club proves that the potential is there to be unleashed if he can get a consistent run of games under his belt.

Scoring 40 goals and providing 10 assists for Eintracht Frankfurt, the 24-year-old caught the eye of his current club when bagging an incredibly impressive 27 goals and seven assists over 48 appearances in 2018/19.

Indeed, this record more than proves that, when he is consistently involved, Jovic can offer a huge attacking output, something Everton are desperate for.

If Everton were to lose Richarlison this summer, Jovic would clearly be a worthwhile target to pursue as Lampard could offer him the game time he clearly needs to thrive, which gives the Toffees a great advantage to tempt the Serbian into a move to Merseyside.

However, Lampard will need to ensure he can secure top-flight football next season if he is going to have any chance of sealing a signing such as Jovic, with the last games of the season potentially making or breaking Everton’s opportunity to rebuild their side this summer.

Mazhar Majeed known to Pakistan players

Mazhar Majeed, the man at the centre of the spot-fixing controversy that has engulfed the ongoing Lord’s Test between England and Pakistan, is known to many members of the Pakistan team as a UK-based agent

Mazhar Majeed, the man at the centre of the spot-fixing controversy that has engulfed the ongoing Lord’s Test between England and Pakistan, is known to many members of the Pakistan team as a UK-based agent. Along with his brother Azhar, Mazhar claimed to represent the interests of a number of Pakistan’s top cricketers in the UK.Mazhar was arrested by Scotland Yard on Saturday night on suspicion of a conspiracy to defraud bookmakers. He was caught on camera by claiming to have bribed Pakistan’s bowlers to bowl no-balls at previously agreed moments during the Test. He claimed to the paper to have up to seven players from the side working for him, though so far only four have been named.Cricinfo understands that the brothers have known many members in the team since at least 2006, the last time Pakistan toured England. It is unclear whether any official agreement was signed between the players and the brothers, but over a number of years Azhar and Mazhar have handled various sponsorship and marketing contracts for the players in the UK.How familiar the brothers are with the players is also evident from the UK-based , a popular fan website that regularly carries out interviews with Pakistan’s top cricketers. In a number of interviews with players such as Salman Butt and Saeed Ajmal, Azhar and Mazhar were thanked for setting up the interaction. For a while, between 2008 and 2009, the website had a regular section called “The Agents Views”, in which Azhar would update readers on the activities of a number of players. The introduction to this section calls Azhar the UK-based agent for a number of players including Abdul Razzaq, Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Yousuf, Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal, Misbah-ul-Haq, Abdur Rauf as well as others. The same website also revealed that Mazhar was in Australia during Pakistan’s tour at the start of this year. Pakistan lost every single international through the series; an inquiry in the aftermath of the fractious tour revealed that coaches Aaqib Javed and Intikhab Alam suspected Kamran Akmal of deliberately underperforming. Allegations centred, in particular, around the second Test in Sydney, which Pakistan lost from a dominant position by 36 runs. However, insisted Mazhar’s role was purely to set up interviews. “Let us clarify that Mr. Majeed was a representative for the said players who allowed us access to interview these players,” they told Cricinfo. “There is no other connection with him or his organization as far as PP is concerned – our only mission was to bring the voice of the players to the fans and also take feedback to the players.”The inquiry committee looked into other matches as well, including the Twenty20 international in Melbourne, which Pakistan lost by two runs. Board officials stopped short of using the term match-fixing, but privately conceded that players might have underperformed to undermine others as part of rampant factionalism and politicking within the side. While in Australia, the players apparently sent a video message to their Under-19 counterparts, at that time across the Tasman Sea in New Zealand preparing for the World Cup final against Australia. And a post underneath the thread thanks Mazhar, “who is currently in Australia with the players for sending clips to PP [Pakpassion]”.

Lions seek second win in low-profile clash

South Australia’s progress to the semi-finals has made it a crucial Sunday for the other four teams in Group B. Lions will start as clear favourites against Guyana in the first game tomorrow

South Australia’s qualification to the semi-finals has made it a crucial Sunday for the other four teams in Group B. If the Lions lose to Guyana and Mumbai Indians beat Royal Challengers Bangalore, the last group game between the Lions and Bangalore will become a virtual quarter-final, with net run-rate also coming into play. The Lions would want to avoid that situation with a win at the Wanderers over a Guyana side that has struggled in its first two games. It is hard to believe that this is the same side that beat Trinidad & Tobago on their way to the Caribbean T20 title less than two months ago. T&T had an unbeaten run to the final of the inaugural Champions League last year with a style of play that was distinctly Caribbean. The only thing distinct about Guyana has been their inability to compete with the IPL sides, who themselves haven’t done well against better opposition. Defeat will put Guyana on the flight back home and even a win will barely keep them alive, given their woeful net run-rate.While the batting that clicked in the Caribbean T20 – particularly Travis Dowlin, Jonathan Foo and Sewnarine Chattergoon – looked out of touch against Bangalore, the bowling was mauled by Mumbai’s Kieron Pollard. It will be hard for Guyana to recover from that thrashing within three days.Weekend scheduling means the Lions have had six days off after their previous match. Their bowlers have gone for almost nine an over so far, putting pressure on the batting. And but for Shane Burger’s twin strikes against Mumbai, they might well have been in a situation similar to Guyana’s. Still, the home team will start as clear favourites tomorrow.Team newsShane Burger missed the match against South Australia due to injury and should be back for this game.Lions (probable): 1 Alviro Petersen (capt), 2 Jonathan Vandiar, 3 Richard Cameron, 4 Vaughan van Jaarsveld, 5 Neil McKenzie, 6 Robert Frylinck, 7 Zander de Bruyn, 8 Thami Tsolekile (wk), 9 Shane Burger, 10 Aaron Phangiso, 11 Ethan O’ReillyFast bowler Paul Wintz replaced offspinner Lennox Cush in the previous match, and was smashed for 46 runs in four overs. Cush should regain his place in the XI.Guyana (possible): 1 Travis Dowlin, 2 Sewnarine Chattergoon, 3 Ramnaresh Sarwan (capt), 4 Narsingh Deonarine, 5 Chistopher Barnwell, 6 Robert Crandon, 7 Jonathan Foo, 8 Derwin Christian (wk), 9 Lennox Cush, 10 Esuan Crandon, 11 Devendra BishooWatch out for …Guyana are heavily dependent on Ramnaresh Sarwan, their only world-class batsman, and he knows it. Guyana’s bowling should not pose too many worries.Key contestsDevendra Bishoo v Lions’ batting: The legspinner was Man-of-the-Series in the Caribbean T20 and took three wickets against Mumbai, including that of Sachin Tendulkar.
