Arteta can replace Odegaard by unleashing Arsenal's "signing of the summer"

After a long, long two weeks, the international break has finally come to an end, and Arsenal are back in action.

Mikel Arteta’s side will be looking to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table when they take on Fulham away from home later on this afternoon.

However, Craven Cottage has not been a happy hunting ground for the Gunners in recent years, and they’ll be without club captain Martin Odegaard.

Fortunately, Arteta now has a squad to deal with situations such as this, and to make sure his side collect all three points, he should bring in one of his best summer signings to replace the Norwegian.

Arsenal's recent form against Fulham

Arsenal’s overall record against Fulham is a spectacular one, as since their first meeting back in February 1904, they have won 43 games, drawn 13 and lost just nine.

There have also been some big wins in that time, such as a 5-1 thumping at Craven Cottage in former manager Unai Emery’s first game against the West Londoners, a game famous for a brilliant team goal.

However, even though Arteta has transformed the North Londoners back into title challengers in recent seasons, Fulham have become something of a bogey team for his side at the same time.

For example, in the last five encounters, Arsenal have won just two games, drawn two and lost one.

Moreover, the Gunners dropped two points in the game at Craven Cottage last season and dropped all three the year before that, in a season they lost the league by just two.

In other words, while this should be a straightforward game on paper for Arteta’s men, it truly is anything but.

With that said, Arsenal are looking good, have already won at another historically tough ground in St James’ Park, and should have more than enough firepower to deal with whatever Marco Silva has planned for this afternoon.

Additionally, while Odegaard’s absence is far from ideal, Arteta can start someone else in his place who’s just as talented a footballer.

The Arsenal player who should replace Odegaard

Arsenal might not have spent as much money on individual players as some other sides this summer, but they made sure to bolster the squad, and as a result, there are a few ways Arteta can replace Odegaard for this game.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, the best option he has is to keep Declan Rice and Eberechi Eze in the midfield and bring Martin Zubimendi back into the starting lineup.

There are a few reasons why this would be the best approach, and the first is that his presence at the base of midfield will allow Eze to focus all his attention on the happenings at the sharp end of the pitch.

Moreover, even though Rice has been dropping back a bit more on occasion this season, almost into a double pivot, having the former Real Sociedad star behind him should also give him more license to bomb forward at times.

With that said, it’s not just the 26-year-old’s defensive stability that makes him an obvious inclusion in the lineup, but his passing range and ability to strike the ball.

The latter was on full display when he scored that ridiculous volley against Nottingham Forest, and the former has been on display all season, be that in short passes out from the back, impressive switches, or long driving through balls.

For example, according to FBref, he ranks in the top 6% of midfielders in the Premier League this season for pass completion, long pass completion, passes blocked and successful take-on percentage, the top 10% for overall blocks and more, all per 90.

In other words, the former Liverpool target is an extremely well-rounded six, and with numbers like these, plus the eye-test, it’s easy to see why club insider AFC Camdem has dubbed him the Gunners’ “signing of the summer.”

Ultimately, missing Odegaard is far from ideal, but by bringing Zubimendi back into Arsenal’s starting lineup, Arteta will allow Rice and Eze to be more expressive and attacking, which should help them collect three points.

Not Isak or Anderson: Howe must re-sign Newcastle’s "public enemy No. 1"

Newcastle United are evolving, adapting to a new variant of Eddie Howe’s tactical ideology after a summer of change and upheaval.

Namely, the record-breaking sale of Alexander Isak to Premier League champions Liverpool rocked the boat and then some, but Newcastle have replaced Isak with Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.

With three goals in six games, Woltemade, 23, looks a real talent, described as the “problem and solution” by reporter Craig Hope, who was discussing United’s teething problems as they adapt to a different brand of striker who, albeit, has towering potential.

Wissa’s fortunes differ, however, having yet to play or even train with the first team after his move from Brentford this summer due to a knee injury.

For all the positive additions, though, the sense can’t be shaken that the Magpies have parted with several top talents in recent years, and they might have had a big impact this season and beyond.

As Howe himself has revealed, one of those players is Elliot Anderson, who the boss would love to welcome back to St. James’ Park.

Howe's latest comments on Elliot Anderson

In 2024, Newcastle sold Anderson to Nottingham Forest. The fee was mooted to be around £35m. Here was a top midfield talent, but PSR demanded levies from Newcastle, and this was a sacrifice PIF had to make.

In hindsight, the Toon chiefs must wish they had found another way to circumvent their financial problems. Hailed as a “phenomenal player” by Three Lions teammate Reece James, the 22-year-old has only gone from strength to strength since leaving his boyhood club, so complete in his midfield role.

Howe said this week that he wants the Geordie back at the club, but that won’t be an easy one to get over the line. Anderson is the centrepiece of the Tricky Trees project, and bringing him back to Tyneside would cost a pretty penny indeed.

Nonetheless, Newcastle can dream of a reunion. Anderson’s dynamic approach to his craft suggests he would be perfect alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, creative, crunching in the duel and a veritable workhorse.

It’s a great shame that Newcastle didn’t keep him in the ranks, but the decision was an understandable one.

Anderson wasn’t the only prospect who should have stayed put, though. Indeed, another was sold around the same time who has since proved themselves in the Premier League.

The other talent Newcastle should re-sign

If Yankuba Minteh ever wore the Newcastle shirt after completing his transfer from Danish side Odense Boldklub in 2023, it was not in a competitive capacity.

Now he plays in blue and white, having joined Brighton & Hove Albion one year ago in a £30m package. Last season, Minteh impressed for the Seagulls; raw and unpolished, yes, but the Gambian winger showcased his physical and technical qualities, scoring seven goals and assisting five more across all competitions.

Across six Premier League games so far this term, Minteh has scored once and registered two assists.

And the underlying data highlights why Brighton paid the big bucks for a young gem, untested in the English game after spending the 2023/24 season on loan in the Netherlands with Arne Slot’s Feyenoord.

As per data-driven platform FBref, he ranks among the top 12% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe for successful take-ons, the top 5% for carries into the penalty area and the top 1% for tackles won per 90 over the past year.

The 21-year-old has even won 6.8 duels per game in the Premier League so far, and though his distribution could use some work, he’s a real menace in the final third.

It’s something Newcastle know only too well. After all, Minteh has scored two goals in two matches against Newcastle, including a draw in the Premier League last season and as the Seagulls knocked Howe’s outfit out of the FA Cup in the semi-finals.

Following these blows, Spanish reporter Jose Alberto Chozas even called him “public enemy number one for Newcastle fans”, and understandably so at that.

If Minteh continues to make headway in the Premier League with Brighton, there’s every chance he will strike once again, and that’s something Howe cannot abide, given he had him in his grasp.

While Newcastle ended a lengthy search for a pacy right-sided forward this summer when landing Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest for a £55m fee, there’s little to suggest the Sweden international’s ceiling stretches higher than Minteh’s.

And anyway, where is the harm in having a duality of choice on the flank? Jacob Murphy is only 30 years old, but he won’t be around forever, and Minteh boasts the profile Howe looks for.

As with Anderson, it is going to cost Newcastle a hefty sum indeed, should they be interested in bringing Minteh back to the club in the coming years.

However, his trajectory on the south coast suggests that they must act swiftly, for Minteh is only getting better and better, and his price tag will rise concurrently.

TEAMtalk have recently revealed that a host of the Premier League’s top clubs are already sniffing around after witnessing the star’s early-season form, so Newcastle must pounce while they can.

Nasir Hossain resumes playing competitive cricket after two-year ban ends

Bangladesh allrounder Nasir Hossain, who was banned by the ICC for two years for breaching the Emirates Cricket Board’s anti-corruption code during the Abu Dhabi T10 league in 2020-21, has resumed playing competitive cricket.Nasir appeared for Rupganj Tigers Cricket Club in their Dhaka Premier Division League match against Gazi Group Cricketers in Mirpur on Monday.”As per the terms of the sanction, Nasir Hossain has now fulfilled all requirements, including completing the mandatory anti-corruption education session,” the BCB said in a release. “This has paved the way for his eligibility to re-enter official cricket as of April 7, 2025.”Related

Nasir was one of eight people associated with the Pune Devils franchise who were charged by the ICC in September 2023. Of his two-year ban, six months were suspended. The first charge against Nasir was that he “failed to disclose to the designated anti-corruption official (without unnecessary delay) the receipt of a gift that was offered to him that had a value of over US$750, namely the gift of a new iPhone 12”.The second charge was that he “failed to disclose to the designated anti-corruption official full details of the approach or invitation he received to engage in corrupt conduct via the new iPhone 12”.Nasir also “failed or refused, without compelling justification, to cooperate with the designated anti-corruption official’s investigation”. He had accepted all three charges.Nasir played 19 Tests, 65 ODIs and 31 T20Is for Bangladesh from 2011 to 2018. Gould: Hundred IPL links won't affect Pakistan player involvement

Despite the fact IPL owners make up half of the new investors in the Hundred, the ECB does not expect India’s male cricketers to be made available for the tournament, nor does it anticipate issues with players from Pakistan taking part in England’s flagship competition. On Thursday, the ECB confirmed it had entered into exclusivity agreements with eight partners to secure private investment in each of the Hundred’s teams, with a total valuation of just over £975 million. Those investors now enter an eight-week negotiation period with the eight host counties. Among them are RPSG Group (owners of Lucknow Super Giants), Sun TV Network Limited (Sunrisers Hyderabad), Reliance Industries Limited (Mumbai Indians) and GMR Group (co-owners of Delhi Capitals), who were successful with bids for Manchester Originals, Northern Superchargers, Oval Invincibles and Southern Brave, respectively. While the ECB has got its wish with a variety of prospective new owners, there is a strong feeling that bringing on high-profile IPL investment will open up the lucrative Indian market. However, the ECB hierarchy do not believe these new connections will soften the BCCI stance on barring India’s active male players from participating in foreign T20 leagues. While many have graced county cricket, none have appeared in the men’s Hundred or the T20 Blast.Related

“In terms of the India TV market, the overseas market is very important for us,” ECB chief executive, Richard Gould, said. “The fact that we have got such a wide-ranging set of investors from around the globe will, I believe, help us to add extra value to our overseas broadcast rights.”In terms of availability to Indian players, that is not priced in with our plans. The BCCI’s position has been very clear. At some point we’d love to see Indian players come and play in England. We currently see them obviously in bilaterals and actually quite a lot in county cricket. But that’s not something that we have predetermined through this process.”Gould also stated the ECB will ensure opportunities for Pakistan’s cricketers won’t be limited by the IPL influence on the Hundred. Given the tensions between India and Pakistan, no player representing Pakistan has taken part in the IPL since the inaugural season in 2008.The BCCI has never handed down an edict on the matter, but teams have operated accordingly, and not just in India. The first three seasons of the SA20, for instance, where all six teams are associated with IPL franchises, has not had any representative from Pakistan. There remains little if any Pakistan representation in IPL-owned teams at both the ILT20 and Major League Cricket (MLC). By contrast, the Hundred has relied heavily on Pakistani talent for overseas slots in a bid to uphold its “best versus best” tagline.”We’re aware of that in other regions,” Gould said of the playing restrictions encountered by cricketers from Pakistan, “but that won’t be happening here.”The ECB does hope working with IPL owners more directly will, in time, give the Hundred a dedicated window. Previous editions of The Hundred have coincided with MLC and the CPL, resulting in a conflict around talent acquisition. Though the MLC will finish before the Hundred this year, there is a two-week crossover with the CPL.With three of the eight Hundred investors involved in the MLC – Reliance (MI New York), GMR (Seattle Orcas) and Welsh Fire’s prospective 50% co-owner Sanjay Govil (Washington Freedom) – and former Professional Cricketers’ Association commercial director Johnny Grave in place as the league’s CEO, there is scope for more joined-up thinking around competition windows going forward.”One of the advantages that we have with our set is that there’s a connection there with majority of the other cricket leagues around the world,” Vikram Banerjee, who oversaw the Hundred sale as the ECB’s director of business operations, said. “And for all of those [T20] leagues around the world, it makes little sense for any of us to clash if we can avoid it.”So we are now on the same side, if you like, and we can have sensible conversations going forward. For the MLC, that includes that we obviously know the new CEO there pretty well.”But for us it’s about ensuring that we can make a Hundred of real success in our window by getting the best players, and clashes make that hard. So we’ll do our best to avoid it. And I think all the people coming in understand that.”

Sima repeat at Ibrox: Rangers are in talks to sign "outstanding" £15m star

There may be some Glasgow Rangers supporters who are currently questioning the board, the recruitment department, and head coach Russell Martin.

You did not have to have super hearing to be aware of the feelings of some fans towards the manager during the 6-0 defeat to Club Brugge in Belgium on Wednesday night.

The Light Blues have conceded 17 goals in ten competitive matches under the new head coach, failing to qualify for the Champions League and failing to win any of their three games in the Scottish Premiership to date.

However, the recruitment department should also take some of the blame because it is, ultimately, the players on the pitch who are significantly underperforming at this moment in time.

Yes, Martin has to put a system and tactics in place that get the best out of the players, but there have been far too many simple mistakes that players signed by Rangers should not be making.

The recruitment team need to get the right calibre of players in the building, and that is why some may be frustrated to learn that Abdallah Sima currently looks set to leave Brighton for a relatively modest fee.

Rangers have missed a trick with Abdallah Sima

The Senegal international is reportedly on the verge of signing for Ligue 1 side Lens in a deal that is worth an initial fee of just £3.9m, plus add-ons on top of that.

Abdallah Sima

For context, Rangers paid £4.5m to sign Oscar Cortes from Lens as part of their obligation to make his loan permanent this summer. The Colombian winger has scored one league goal for Rangers since his arrival, initially on loan, in January 2024.

During Sima’s time on loan at Rangers from Brighton in the 2023/24 campaign, the left-sided attacker proved that he had the quality to make a big impact in Scottish football.

The £3.9m-rated star scored 16 goals in all competitions for the Ibrox giants, per Transfermarkt, and offered a big goal threat in the Premiership for Philippe Clement.

As you can see in the table above, Sima delivered 13 direct goal contributions in 17 starts in the top-flight for Rangers that season, before he returned to Brighton at the end of his loan spell.

The forward then scored 12 goals in all competitions for Brest on loan in France last season, which shows that he has continued to offer a threat in front of goal.

Abdallah Sima

This is why Rangers missing out on a £3.9m deal, particularly given what they paid for Cortes, could be seen as a blunder by the recruitment team and Martin.

However, the Gers are now reportedly looking at a move for a Premier League attacker who could be a Sima repeat at Ibrox in the 2025/26 campaign.

Rangers in talks to sign Premier League forward

According to RangersReview, Rangers have made contact with Everton over a potential deal to sign Portuguese centre-forward Youssef Chermiti.

The report claims that the Light Blues have enquired about a move to bring him to Ibrox on a season-long loan deal, with talks underway between the two clubs ahead of Monday’s deadline.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Everton-based reporter El Bobble adds that the Gers are advancing in talks to complete a deal for the versatile forward, which suggests that progress has been made in recent hours.

The account, previously credited by David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano, claims that the Scottish giants are also looking to include an option to make the deal permanent.

It is now down to the club to ensure that they can wrap up a move for the 21-year-old star in the coming days before the window slams shut on Monday.

Why Chermiti could be the next Sima for Rangers

Supporters may take a look at Chermiti’s statistics and be concerned by the fact that he has not scored a goal in over two years with Everton, although he only played four times in the Premier League last season.

The young forward has failed to deliver a single goal or assist in 24 matches for Everton in all competitions, per Transfermarkt, which is not going to instill much hope from fans looking into his career.

However, Chermiti, dubbed an “outstanding” talent by U23 scout Antonio Mango, also came through the ranks and made first-team appearances at Sporting, a huge club, before being signed for a whopping fee of £15m by Everton in 2023.

Despite not scoring a competitive goal for Everton’s first-team, there is potential for Chermiti to arrive at Ibrox as a repeat of Sima, as another loanee from a Premier League club who could make a big impact at Ibrox.

Prior to his loan move to Glasgow, Sima had not played a single game for Brighton and had only scored five goals on loan at Angers, which shows that they were not signing a proven talent at the time.

As you can see in the table above, Chermiti has showcased his goalscoring potential at youth level for Portugal across various age groups in recent years, scoring 12 goals in 22 games since making the step up to U18 football.

He has not had a run of starts to show what he can do at first-team level, yet, and that is why a move to Rangers could make a lot of sense for all parties involved.

Chermiti will have the chance to play regular football and translate his goalscoring prowess at youth level over to the Premiership, and Rangers will have a talented young player who could develop during his time at Ibrox, much like Sima did.

Jacob Bethell to debut for England in first Test against New Zealand

Ollie Pope will keep wicket as tourists deal with fallout from Jordan Cox injury

Vithushan Ehantharajah25-Nov-2024Jacob Bethell will make his Test debut for England at No. 3 against New Zealand in the first Test at Hagley Oval on Thursday, despite never having fulfilled the role in first-class cricket. As part of a reshuffled batting line-up following Jordan Cox’s broken thumb – who was initially set to debut with Jamie Smith missing the tour on paternity leave – the Warwickshire middle order batter will come in at first-drop to allow Ollie Pope to keep wicket with a more withdrawn role at six. Joe Root will remain at No.4 for his 150th cap.The selection of Bethell in a position of such responsibility is a reflection of the selectors’ regard for his talent. He made his T20I and ODI debuts against Australia at the end of the home summer, and impressed out in the Caribbean with three half-centuries across both formats on that white ball tour. He subsequently earned a maiden IPL gig with a £245,000 deal with Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday.England XI for first Test against New Zealand•ESPNcricinfo LtdNevertheless, the 21-year-old remains an unknown quantity in first-class cricket. He averages 25.44 from 30 innings, with just five half-centuries, none of which have come higher than No. 5. A career-best score of 93 came against Nottinghamshire in April. He will be come the first specialist batter to play Test cricket for England without a first-class century since Mike Gatting in 1978.Bethell only arrived in New Zealand on Sunday after time off at home following the West Indies series. As a result, he did not play any part in the two-day tour match against the New Zealand Prime Minister’s XI.In a year of left-field selections from England, this might rank as one on the outer reaches of that spectrum. Particularly given Root, with his wealth of experience, could have performed the role. While Ben Stokes has been keen to allow England’s leading Test run-scorer the comfort of batting No. 4 throughout his tenure as captain, it is worth noting Root’s 262 against Pakistan last month came at three.Speaking on Tuesday, Root revealed he had not been approached about batting three, but backed Bethell to take this fast-tracked promotion in his stride. Despite having never played together, the pair know each other well as their fathers played together at Sheffield Collegiate Cricket Club.”I love the look of him as a player,” said Root. “I’ve known Jacob and his family a long time and it’s been lovely to watch him grow up as a player coming through in Barbados then at Warwickshire. What he’s done in the white-ball stuff more recently has been exceptional.”He’s full of confidence, he’s got great ability and a really well rounded game. He’s a mature head on young shoulders and I think he has all the components to set him up nicely to be successful in this format and at this level. I’m sure he’ll enjoy every aspect of the week, I’m really looking forward to watching him do his stuff.”If you look at the way he sets up I think it suits that (batting at three), especially here with the little bit of extra bounce and carry. He plays very well square of the wicket and if he gets in on a wicket like that he could be very destructive. It’s a really exciting opportunity and prospect for us to see a young player coming in hopefully doing something really special at the start of his career.”This particular gamble has been forced, to a point. Cox’s injury in the nets on Sunday morning ahead of play in Queenstown threw their initial plans into disarray. There has been a further complication as Durham’s Ollie Robinson – due to be confirmed as the injury replacement – is currently getting his passport renewed. However it was unlikely he would have featured in the opening Test given the travel involved and the time needed to overcome jet lag.Despite a green seamer expected at Hagley Oval, England have chosen to persist with Shoaib Bashir as their spinner, with Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse the out-and-out seamers, and Stokes as the all-round option.England XI for first Test: 1 Zak Crawley, 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Jacob Bethell, 4 Joe Root, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Ollie Pope (wk), 7 Ben Stokes (capt), 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Gus Atkinson, 10 Brydon Carse, 11 Shoaib Bashir

Farewell Andre Onana – the worst Man Utd signing of the past 20 years

The calamitous Cameroonian is set to depart for Turkey this week, and there won't be a single United fan who is sad to see the back of him

"You want to tell me in six months the best goalkeeper in the Champions League last season can become the worst in the world? Nah. Everything is temporary," Andre Onana told in December 2023 after an error-laden start to his Manchester United career. "I know it'll be alright. If not today, it will be tomorrow, if not tomorrow, the day after tomorrow."

Almost 21 months on from that interview, it's fair to say that Onana's confidence was misplaced. The former Inter Milan goalkeeper was not the "worst in the world" then, but that's a title he has seemingly done his best to earn since.

There was plenty of blame to go around for United's disastrous 2024-25 season, which saw them finish 15th in the Premier League table, but Onana was the symbol of their failure. He became an easy target for opposing teams and constantly undermined the efforts of his team-mates with his staggering ineptitude between the sticks.

As a result, Onana has lost the trust of head coach Ruben Amorim, who started the new campaign with Altay Bayindir in goal, before signing 23-year-old Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on deadline day. It is expected that Lammens will be United's new No.1, despite his lack of experience, because Bayindir has also proven to be an unreliable pair of hands, while Onana is now being shipped off to Turkey.

The Cameroon international has agreed to join Trabzonspor on a season-long loan, which, remarkably, gives him the chance to almost double his current salary. But the move also effectively ends his time at the top level of the sport. Onana has been so terrible at Old Trafford that his once-proud reputation is in ruins, and he will go down as United's worst signing of the last 20 years, which is some achievement considering how many flops have passed through the club since the Glazer family's takeover in 2005.

Getty Images Sport'He makes the whole team nervous'

Onana has made countless mistakes across his 102 appearances in a United shirt, with not of them being punished. If they had, it's entirely possible that Amorim's side would have been in a genuine fight to avoid relegation last season. Officially, just 22 of his errors have led to goals being conceded, but that is still an insanely high number considering he's only been at Old Trafford for two years.

Many of those have come in extremely important matches, too. Indeed, Onana was almost single-handedly responsible for United's group stage exit from the Champions League in 2023-24, shipping 15 goals as the team finished bottom of a group containing Bayern Munich, Copenhagen and Galatasaray. He somehow let a tame Leroy Sane shot slip under him in a 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich on matchday one, before passing the ball straight to Dries Mertens when United were locked at 2-2 with Galatasaray in their second game at Old Trafford, which forced Casemiro into a red card tackle on the Belgian.

United ended up losing 3-2 that day, and could only manage a 3-3 draw in the return fixture in Turkey, which effectively sealed their early elimination. Onana was beaten by two Hakim Ziyech free-kicks, the second of which he pushed into the net from a central position despite being under no pressure. "I’m not sure what he’s actually trying to do, punch it away with his right hand? It’s weak," United legend Paul Scholes told after the game. "He makes people nervous, he makes the defence nervous, he makes the whole team nervous. He makes simple saves look really, really difficult."

As Scholes observed, Onana has never shown any kind of authority in the United net. During his second Premier League home game for United against Nottingham Forest, he famously stayed rooted to his six-yard box when Taiwo Awoniyi ran through, and then bizarrely collapsed to the ground so that the striker could roll the ball into the net.

Onana showed similar levels of fear when allowing Jarrod Bowen to knock the ball in off his leg in United's 2-0 defeat away at West Ham on December 23, 2023, and three days later, he neglected to go and claim a teasing touchline free-kick from Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn, and the ball crept past him at the far post. It was clear early on that Onana couldn't command his box or save simple shots, but then-United coach Erik ten Hag stuck by the Cameroonian, having previously worked with him at Ajax, and defended his "strong character" when facing up to the media.

The Red Devils fell to eighth in the Premier League table by the end of the 2023-24 campaign, but Ten Hag was given a new contract on the back of an unlikely run to FA Cup glory. That success was in no way down to Onana, who was largely poor in United's hugely unconvincing semi-final win over Coventry and gifted Manchester City a way back into the game late on in the final by fumbling a low Jeremy Doku strike in at his near post.

United have made signing a new goalkeeper a priority that summer, but instead, Ten Hag blew the best part of £100 million ($135m) on the likes of Matthijs de Ligt, Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee, all of whom have struggled for consistency at Old Trafford. The Dutch coach was way out of his depth, and his misplaced faith in Onana led to his inevitable sacking just three months into the new season.

United only won three of their first nine Premier League games in 2024-25, and drew their opening three Europa League fixtures against FC Twente, Porto and Fenerbahce. Onana didn't add to his reel of shame during that run, but he was still constantly guilty of woeful positioning and a distinct lack of courage with aerial balls, and his uncertainty continued to filter through to the rest of the backline.

Ten Hag was ousted after a 2-1 loss at West Ham on October 27, which left United down in 14th in the Premier League. United part-owners INEOS moved quickly to lure Amorim away from Sporting CP as Ten Hag's successor, but the Portuguese inherited the mother of all messes, and quickly learned that all of his best laid plans would count for little with Onana serving as the last line of defence.

Amorim started with a 1-1 draw against Ipswich, a 4-0 win over Everton, and a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal, before United played host to surprise top-four contenders Nottingham Forest. Onana was at fault for two goals as Forest picked up their first victory at Old Trafford in 30 years, first letting a Morgan Gibbs-White pea roller in before being caught at sea by a looping Chris Wood header.

United then suffered a major Europa League scare when they fell behind away to Viktoria Plzen, as Onana was punished for a terrible pass out from the back once again. Of all Onana's weaknesses, his woeful distribution has been the most disappointing, because he was initially hailed as the finest ball-playing 'keeper on the continent after his initial arrival from Inter in 2023.

Amorim's men battled back to win that contest 2-1 and reach the knockout phase, but United lost three of their next four league outings, and Onana continued to be a complete liability. He even conceded directly from a Matheus Cunha corner in a 2-0 reversal at Wolves, which Premier League legend Chris Sutton described as "Under-12s stuff" in his BBC Sport column.

Onana would grab more unwanted headlines after the turn of the year as United struggled to build any kind of momentum under Amorim. He even managed to ruin the rare moments of encouragement, including when the Red Devils fought to a 3-2 win against Ipswich at Old Trafford after playing the entire second half with 10 men.

Jaden Philogene opened the scoring for the visitors because of a communication mix-up between Onana and Patrick Dorgu, and doubled his account with a cross that went all the way in because the United 'keeper kept to his usual scared statue routine. But the worst was still yet to come.

Ahead of a Europa League quarter-final clash with Lyon, Onana had the audacity to claim that United were "way better" than the French team, prompting a scathing response from Nemanja Matic. "If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United's history, you need to take care what you're talking about," said the Lyon midfielder, who played for the Red Devils between 2017 and 2022.

Onana fired back with an ill-advised dig at Matic's trophyless spell at Old Trafford, only to then prove the Serbian right with a shocking performance in the first leg of the tie at the Groupama Stadium. The former Ajax stopper was hopelessly deceived by a Thiago Almada free-kick in the first half, and with United holding a 2-1 lead in the final minute of second-half injury time, he fumbled a Corentin Tolisso shot straight into the path of Rayan Cherki, who was then able to dink in a dramatic equaliser from close range.

The Red Devils won a crazy second leg 5-4 after extra time and saw off Athletic Club in the next round to set up an all-English final against Tottenham, but Onana did not complete his redemption arc. He was far too static for Brennan Johnson's decisive goal in Bilbao, which saw Tottenham clinch their first trophy in 17 years and compound the worst season in United's entire history.

Matthew Potts hits the road in bid to prove his all-format worth

Developing as an all-formats, all-conditions bowler is a work in progress for Matthew Potts. At this juncture, he is halfway through gauging how that is coming along, with a fortnight of white-ball action set to make way for a month with the red.Friday’s fourth ODI at Lord’s is an opportunity to square the series with Australia, and set up a decider in Bristol on Sunday, even if rain threatens to have the final say. On Tuesday, just two days after that fifth ODI, Potts will be one of six members of the squad to fly out for the Test tour to Pakistan. It is an unnecessarily tight turnaround. With no time for Potts to head home, he has been dragging around three suitcases to take him through to the conclusion of this series and the three Tests in Pakistan. Home beckons at the end of October.”I think that’s the beauty of being a multi-formatted cricketer,” Potts said. “You’ve got to be ready for every eventuality but at the same time be able to compartmentalize for different things. I’ve got all the stuff packed but I’m focused on this white-ball series first.”Among the clothing, kit and, of course, golf clubs, the Durham seamer is hoping he packed some extra pace. That, he believes, is the first step to becoming the multi-faceted quick he wants to be.”It’s something that I’ve looked at: being not only useful in England, but also useful elsewhere,” he said, when asked about the upcoming Pakistan tour. “There’s been a change, trying to increase my ball speed, try and be a bit more effective elsewhere. I think I’m taking positive steps towards trying to make myself useful everywhere.”Related

At present, Potts’ speeds from his debut season to now have been consistent, averaging 132kph. But the 25-year-old has made changes which he believes should translate to bigger numbers on the speed gun.”It’s something to do with how my run-up is and how explosive I can be, and maybe using my front arm a little bit more efficiently,” he explained. “I have quite a bustly run-up, but slowing things down sometimes actually returns it into being slightly faster. So it’s just working on things and tinkering around … there’s no real correct formula to how to do it, but just tinkering around with little things and just seeing what it’s like.”Should Potts earn selection in either Multan – the venue for the first two matches – or Rawalpindi, it will be his first overseas Test cap on just his second overseas trip with the full squad. He did not see action on the 2023 tour of New Zealand, having been left out of the previous tour to Pakistan at the end of 2022, despite playing the first five of his eight Tests that summer. That England were able to triumph 3-0 two years ago remains arguably their most impressive feat under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum. Potts, for all his belief in his ability, appreciates he might not have been able to assist as a seamer back then in the way James Anderson, Mark Wood and Ollie Robinson did.”No, probably not. I probably didn’t have the extra ball speed,” he said. “That is something I’ve been working on over the last six or seven months… I probably wasn’t ready for that, and my game probably wasn’t at that level just yet.”None of those three bowlers are in England’s plans this time around, with Wood ruled out due to an elbow problem, so the onus is on the likes of Potts to step up. Doing so will put an end to what has been an intermittent international career, with 15 appearances scattered across the last two years. His 2024 international summer only began in August. The loss of Stokes to a hamstring injury opened the door for a recall for the first two Tests against Sri Lanka. There was ring-rust in the first innings at Emirates Old Trafford (0 for 48 from nine overs), which was shaken off in the second with 3 for 47, followed by a couple more wickets at Lord’s.He was left “a little bit gutted” when he was dropped for final Test at the Kia Oval, making way for Leicestershire’s Josh Hull. That England plumped for a tall left-armer on debut with just two Division Two wickets this season at an eye-watering average of 182.50, suggested Potts, in their eyes, did not offer anything that they did not already have. This ODI series has given him a first chance to show them otherwise. He has assumed the role of new-ball bowler with little fuss, and in turn showcased some dexterity. There has been good control, as per his economy rate of 5.28, the lowest of all England’s quicks. Of his three wickets, a beaut in the second ODI that took out Steve Smith’s off stump sticks out. The perfect length and some ideal late movement found a rare gap between Smith’s bat and pad. He has been unlucky not to take more.As far as white-ball cricket is concerned, Potts does have an easier route into England’s plans, particularly as they look to rebuild their dynasty from scratch. In many ways, this is an audition to show he can be a viable replacement for Chris Woakes.”Obviously Woakesy’s done a fantastic job for the England one-day side. That’s big boots to fill.”Whether that’s taking the new ball and bowling something at the end, that is generally probably going to be my role in this side. I’m looking forward to it and taking it on – and it’s come out all right so far. So hopefully I’ll keep on going in the right direction.”

Leeds set to offer more than other clubs for 28-goal "classic number nine"

Leeds United are ready to splash the cash this summer as they prepare for life in the Premier League and could now exceed other suitors in the hunt for a talented striker, according to a report.

Leeds United miss out on Habib Diarra

Transfer stories are never as cut and dry as they seem in media reports, but Sunderland will be the ones to pick up Strasbourg’s Habib Diarra after agreeing a package worth £30 million plus add-ons to sign the Senegal international.

Intriguingly, Leeds United had held interest in Diarra previously before confirmation of his move to the North East. Nevertheless, the Elland Road faithful will take comfort from the fact that Jaka Bijol can operate in a deep-lying midfield role if needed.

Moving on, Leeds could look to add Dominic Calvert-Lewin to their forward line, and supporters will be keeping an eagle eye on his next move after the England international confirmed that he would be leaving the Merseyside club under freedom of contract.

Posting on social media, the Whites’ target confirmed he is now seeking a new opportunity to shine, as he stated: “This choice to move on was not simply about me-it was a decision my family and I spent a long time considering together.

“We believe it’s the right moment to seek a new challenge and continue growing, but that doesn’t lessen the bond I’ll always have with Everton.”

Fundamentally, bringing in some level of proven pedigree will be the difference between Leeds staying up or being relegated back to the second-tier at the first attempt, and they may be well on their way to that if reports are to be believed.

Leeds United ready to make Gonzalo Garcia proposal

According to reports in Spain, Leeds are willing to make a £17 million offer for Real Madrid hotshot Gonzalo Garcia following his breakout at the Club World Cup in the United States.

Sunderland are also willing to offer the former Spain Under-19 international a route to the Premier League. However, the Whites are willing to put up a significantly higher amount of money upfront, while AS Roma and Real Oviedo are also attentive to his situation.

Labelled a “classic number nine” by Xabi Alonso, Garcia registered 28 goals and six assists in 46 appearances across all competitions last season, combining his exploits at first-team level and with the Los Blancos’ second string.

Despite the Whites being keen to secure his signature, Real Madrid are set to insert a buyback clause worth £25.6 million in order to have some form of say in his future.

Garcia is rising star and could be a unique market opportunity for someone to take up. Now, Leeds need to convince him that Elland Road is best for his development.
